In fact, it is a bit of breach of etiquette to genuflect in most Eastern Catholic Churches. If you re visiting an Eastern Catholic or an Orthodox church, the when in Rome rule should be adopted. Watch what the home team is doing! Usually, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox reserve a small portion of the eucharistic bread for the dying in a cupboard or eucharistic dove, but it is not a center of attention or devotion. The rule is to make a profound bow, called a metasis, toward the altar bowing deeply while making the sign of the cross. East and West split years before we Westerners began to reserve the Blessed Sacrament prominently in our churches. Thus, the East never changed the original custom of bowing toward the altar. Increasingly, as tabernacles became more widespread in the West and moved into prominent placement within churches, we replaced the bow toward the altar with a genuflection toward the Blessed Sacrament when its place of reservation is visible. In a church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a special chapel or off the main axis of the building, normally you should bow toward the altar when you enter your pew, because the eucharistic table is the principal sign of Christ s presence in the church building. If you have ever participated in the liturgy of Dedication of a Church and Altar, there is no mistaking the altar s significance: it is first slathered with chrism and then adorned with a brazier billowing clouds of incense that fill the whole church as a sign of prayer and presence! From the Pastor s Desk Dear Friends, On Wednesday, May 10th I attended a farewell reception for the former Mayor of Burbank, Mr. Harry Klein. During this event, I met many parishioners of St. Albert, who were very pleased to see me. This also was a wonderful opportunity to meet and speak with the new Mayor of our town; Mr. Dan M. Foy. I hope that our good relations with the new City Officials will continue because Burbank is our home town. Mr. Harry Klein; we thank you for the 40 years of devoted service and wish you a peaceful and pleasant retirement with your family and your friends. It is good to have you as our parishioner! Today I would like to inform all parishioners about some of the upcoming plans for our parish: - We are making preparations to begin work on the Church Sanctuary (workers will replace the old carpet with marble and install new railings, the tabernacle will be moved to the central place in the church because Jesus should always be first in our lives); - We are finishing decorations around the St. Albert the Great statue and the digital information sign; - Plans for the installation of a new fence by the children s playground by State Road are in place; - Preparations for celebrations of the Parish Children s Day are under way (Sunday, June 4th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm); - Students of our parish schools will celebrate this week their graduations, - Starting July 1st we will implement some changes, which will improve the functionality of our parish (When making changes I follow the course of healthy reasoning and concern for the spiritual well-being of our parish. All changes will be in line with church and liturgical regulations. I will give you more details on this subject in the near future). I wish all parishioners and guests a sunny and a peaceful week. Drodzy Parafianie! Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza Ponad tydzień temu w środę 10 maja uczestniczyłem w pożegnalnej kolacji byłego już Majora Burbank Mr. Harry J. Klein. W czasie tego miłego spotkania dostrzegłem wiele znanych twarzy naszych parafian, którzy szczerze cieszyli się także z mojej tam obecności. Była to także znakomita okazja do poznania i krótkiej rozmowy z nowym Majorem naszego miasta Mr. Dan M. Foy. Mam nadzieję, że nasze relacje z nowymi władzami miasta będą w dalszym ciągu bardzo dobre, bo przecież Burbank to nasz mały i rodzinny dom! Mr. Harry J. Klein dziękujemy Ci za długoletnią (40 lat) służbę i życzymy Ci spokojnej i miłej emerytury w gronie swojej rodziny i przyjaciół. Jak dobrze, że jesteś naszym parafianinem! Do others even notice that we are people of hope? In a world often marked by cynicism and hopelessness, do we stand out as people who offer hope and reassurance to others? In today s Gospel Jesus promises that when he leaves the earth he will not leave us orphaned. Today he promises to send his Advocate, the Spirit of truth who will be with us always.
