Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride s father to the priest s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. Rev. 3 Dear Parishioners, From the Pastor s Desk I hope that all of you enjoyed the 4th of July picnics and related festivities. On this occasion I am asking to please, remember in your prayers all those who are in service of the welfare and security of our beloved homeland. Summer days are steadily passing by and we are moving closer to our parish Carnival (August 24-27). I hope that with the cooperation and goodwill of the Burbank authorities, the police and fire department we will be able to celebrate next year s carnival on the grounds of St. Albert the Great Parish. I would like to encourage parents and grandparents to buy passes for all carnival rides. Mega passes are $50.00 each and can make a wonderful gift for your children and grandchildren. We are also looking for groups or individuals that would be willing to cover the costs of the Carnival performance by the Polish Elvis Presley ($400). Please, support with your prayers all undergoing works in our parish (the Sanctuary renovation, a new boiler and fire alarm system in our school, and security cameras for the playground). July 15th and 16th we will have a long-awaited sale of the best in the world - "St. Albert cream pies prepared by Mrs. Maria Shipman. Mrs. Shipman thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your goodness and kindness to our parish! In two weeks (July 22 & 23) our parish will host the "Jerusalem Store". We will be able to buy beautiful devotional - religious items which are made from the olive trees in the Holy Land. I wish all parishioners and guests of our parish a blessed and joyous week. Jesus, I trust in You! Fr. Mariusz The Feast of St. Benedict is celebrated July 11th. Saint Benedict s Story It is unfortunate that no contemporary biography was written of a man who has exercised the greatest influence on monasticism in the West. Benedict is well recognized in the later Dialogues of Saint Gregory, but these are sketches to illustrate miraculous elements of his career. Benedict was born into a distinguished family in central Italy, studied at Rome, and early in life was drawn to monasticism. At first he became a hermit, leaving a depressing world pagan armies on the march, the Church torn by schism, people suffering from war, morality at a low ebb. He soon realized that he could not live a hidden life in a small town any better than in a large city, so he withdrew to a cave high in the mountains for three years. Some monks chose Benedict as their leader for a while, but found his strictness not to their taste. Still the shift from hermit to community life had begun for him. He had an idea of gathering various families of monks into one Grand Monastery to give them the benefit of unity, fraternity, and permanent worship in one house. Finally he began to build what was to become one of the most famous monasteries in the world Monte Cassino, commanding three narrow valleys running toward the mountains north of Naples. The Rule that gradually developed prescribed a life of liturgical prayer, study, manual labor, and living together in community under a common abbot. Benedictine asceticism is known for its moderation, and Benedictine charity has always shown concern for the people in the surrounding countryside. In the course of the Middle Ages, all monasticism in the West was gradually brought under the Rule of St. Benedict. Today the Benedictine family is represented by two branches: the Benedictine Federation encompassing the men and women of the Order of St. Benedict, and the Cistercians, men and women of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance. 5 Moi Drodzy! Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza Mam nadzieję, że wszyscy mieliście fantastyczny i szczęśliwy czas w Dniu Niepodległości-4th of July. W swoich codziennych modlitwach pamiętajmy o tych, którzy służą dla dobra i bezpieczeństwa naszej Ojczyzny. Wakacje szybko mijają i zbliża się czas naszego parafialnego karnawału od 24 do 27 sierpnia. Mam nadzieję, że przy współpracy i życzliwości władz naszego miasta, policji i straży pożarnej nasz karnawał w przyszłym już roku wróci do Burbank i będziemy mogli go wspólnie celebrować na parkingach wokół naszego kościoła. W dalszym ciągu zachęcam rodziców i dziadków do zakupienia specjalnych Megapasów dla dzieci i młodzieży na nasz parafialny karnawał. Pamiętajcie, że ten Megapas może być wspaniałym upominkiem i prezentem z okazji wakacji dla waszych pociech. Page 5 Jezu, ufam Tobie Ks. Mariusz Święto Benedykta z Nursji obchodzimy 11 lipca. Św. Benedykt urodził się w Nursji (położonej w środkowej Italii) ok. roku 480. Studiował w Rzymie, ale zrażony rozpustnym życiem jego mieszkańców, uciekł do pustelni pod Subiaco. W pobliżu swoją pustelnię miał św.roman, który wprowadził św. Benedykta w zagadnienia ascezy chrześcijańskiej. Wieść o świętości Benedykta rozeszła się dość szybko. Zaczął on gromadzi wokół siebie coraz więcej uczniów. Wkrótce po tym zbudował pierwsze klasztory, gdzie mnisi żyli według ustalonej reguły. Reguła benedyktyńska należy do najbardziej rygorystycznych. Wyznacza ona drogę do doskonałości religijnej poprzez praktykę panowania nad sobą, umartwienia, ćwiczenie pokory, posłuszeństwa, poprzez modlitwę, wyciszenie i odosobnienie się od świata i jego trosk. Była ona podstawą życia klasztornego wszystkich zakonów i kongregacji Europy Zachodniej. W roku 529 Benedykt wyjechał do Monte Cassino, gdzie złożył najsłynniejsze z benedyktyńskich opactw. Miejsce to szybko stało się ośrodkiem życia religijnego ówczesnej Europy. Niedługo później, niedaleko Monte Cassino, powstał zakon benedyktynek, gdzie pierwszą zakonnicą została św.scholastyka rodzona siostra św.benedykta. Benedykt umarł 21.marca 543 roku przed ołtarzem klasztoru na Monte Cassino tuż po przyjęciu komunii świętej dlatego jest patronem dobrej śmierci. W roku 1964 został ogłoszony przez papieża Pawła VI patronem Europy. Atrybutami świętego są: księga, kruk trzymający w dziobie zatruty chleb, wiązka rózg, kielich ze żmiją. Św. Benedykt miał w swym życiu wielkie nabożeństwo do krzyża świętego jako znaku zbawczej miłości Jezusa Chrystusa. Często czynił znak krzyża, z jego pomocą pokonywał własne ciężkie pokusy. W życiu św. Benedykta, Bóg mocą tego znaku w cudowny sposób niweczył złe zamiary i omamy szatańskie. Dzięki modlitwie m.in. pękło naczynie z trucizną przeznaczoną dla świętego. W XVII w. ustalił się ikonograficzny typ medalika, z wizerunkiem św. Benedykta na jednej stronie i krzyżem z literami na odwrocie. Ten medal rozszedł się z Niemiec, gdzie został po raz pierwszy wybity, po całej katolickiej Europie. Trwają zapisy do Angielskiej Szkoły Katolickiej i Polsko Angielskiego przedszkola przy Parafii Św. More information and order forms are available in the parish office. A HUMBLE KING Like a tonal center in music, the note to which we keep returning in today s readings is humility. We wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and humble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches from the River to the ends of the earth (Zechariah 9:10).
