Originally it was a way of assuring the sick and imprisoned of their bonds of faith and affection with the community from whom they were separated. By the third century, at least in Rome, we have evidence that the bishop would consign some of the sacred elements to presbyters or deacons. There was a crisis in the unity of the church early on, called the quartodeciman controversy, since some people wanted to celebrate the Pasch on the fourteenth day (quartodecima) of the Jewish month Nissan, even if it didn t fall on a Sunday. The debate so fractured the church that the historian of the era, Eusebius, reported a new development to the pope. He wrote that the churches holding to the Lord s Day sent out consecrated bread to the disgruntled people of the quartodeciman pastors with whom they were quarreling. Meanwhile, bishops complained about people taking the Eucharist home. St. Cyprian told a cautionary tale of a sinful woman who tried to open the casket containing the consecrated bread in her home. She was deterred from receiving, he said, by flames erupting from the box. Clearly, he wanted people to think twice before bringing Communion home! The Council of Nicaea defined the old rule of the church as allowing for reserving the eucharistic bread for the sake of the dying. The same council could foresee circumstances of persecution when people might have the Eucharist on hand to administer to one another in a time of great danger, literally, at the point of a sword. The first and enduring purpose for reserving the Eucharist is viaticum for the dying. From the Pastor s Desk Dear Friends! Two weeks ago during his Lenten sermon, Fr. Wojciech posed to the faithful the following question: what can we buy with money? At the same time Fr. Wojciech gave each one of us the answer: You can buy a bed, but not sleep Computer, but not a brain Cosmetics, but not beauty A building, but not a home Medicine, but not good health Luxury, but not manners Entertainment, but not happiness Acquaintances, but not friends Obedience, but not devotion Sex, but not love Please, think deeply, what plays the most important role in your life? Dearly beloved! This Lenten period helps us to understand what we should value and treasure most in our lifetime. The most important treasure should be our Lord Jesus Christ and his cross. That is why we adore the cross during Lenten devotions in our church. As always, I thank you for your presence at Masses on Sunday, during Stations of the Cross on Fridays, and even the Fish Fry Fridays. Thank you very much to all who came out for our St. Patrick and St. Joseph celebrations, the Spaghetti Dinner and the Sweet Table. I am very happy that we are a one loving parish family. I thank you for faithful example of faith and hope, love and joy, trust and generosity, understanding and kindness, goodness and forgiveness. As we pray to St. Joseph, St. Patrick and St. Albert the Great let us pray in the intention of our parish, our living, sick and deceased parishioners. Finally, together with the priests and Missionary sisters I invite you for a beautiful presentation of the Christ s Passion in our church Saturday, April 1st at 6:00 pm in English and 7:30 pm in Polish. Jednocześnie, dał każdemu z nas odpowiedź: Łóżko, ale nie sen. Komputer, ale nie mózg. Kosmetyki, ale nie urodę. Budynek, ale nie dom. Lekarstwo, ale nie zdrowie. Luksusy, ale nie kulturę. Rozrywki, ale nie szczęście. Znajomość, ale nie przyjaźń. Posłuszeństwo, ale nie wierność. Seks, ale nie miłość. Post Zastanów się co na prawdę liczy się w twoim życiu? Kochani! Czas Wielkiego Postu jest czasem, który pomaga nam jeszcze lepiej zrozumieć co jest największą wartością naszego życia. Tym największym skarbem jest Jezus i Jego krzyż. Dlatego wspólnie adorujmy krzyż Jezusa w czasie nabożeństw pasyjnych w naszym kościele. These images flow from the evangelists portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people s expectations about him or the ways of God. This reversal is at play in today s Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He whose parched lips will say I thirst before he dies is the source of life and lifegiving water.
