From the Pastor s Desk My Dear Parishioners! As with every year we are getting closer to the start of the Annual Catholic Appeal 2018 (28-29 January and 3-4 and 10-11 February). The motto of this year s campaign is the saying of the Lord Jesus: "Follow Me"! These words of Jesus refer to each and every one of us. We are called to build the Kingdom of God here on Earth, and we are responsible for our Church, which has always been for better or for worse Our Home ". With the faith and Christian joy we should each day call out to the divine master of Nazareth: "Lord, it is well that we are here"! All of us in our parish community should be: "the light of love, the bread of peace and the wine of friendship"! I ask you for the gift of constant prayers for the Annual Catholic Appeal and with great humility, I ask you for your generosity. This year, the Archdiocese s goal for our parish is $53,589.00. Because of your generosity, the last year s goal has not only been met but was even exceeded by $14,000.00. The Archdiocese returned this surplus to our parish. I believe that this year we will also, not just meet our goal but exceed it. May the good God richly bless you and your families. I truly appreciate your zeal, goodness, and generosity! During last year we have done many improvements, which actually transformed our church into a beautiful place of worship. In the near future, preferably even before the Fish Fry Fridays, I would like to "install new 3 televisions (HD) in Rogers Hall. The old televisions often break down and are very heavy. Therefore, I m looking for sponsors. The cost of these televisions is approximately $1,000.00 and donations, as always are tax-deductible. I trust that we have in our parish people of good will who and support my initiative! With help from Mrs. Marie Shipman, on February 4th, we will have the best in the world Cream Pie sale. Profit from their sale will cover part of the cost of the ceramic tiles for the main aisle of the church. Individuals, who would like to make a donation toward this project, please contact me or the parish office. We will have a special plaque made with names of all donors. I would like you to thank all of you again for your Christmas gifts to the parish of St. Albert the Great. The total sum of your donations was $53,344.00. May God bless you for your material gifts to our parish, where every week thousands of God s faithful gather for worship. I am very proud of you and embrace you with my priestly zealous prayer. Jesus I Trust in You! Fr. Page 3 Please Make Your Gift to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, Follow Me During the last few weeks, many parish families received a letter from Cardinal Cupich requesting your participation by making a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. We ask that you respond as generously as possible. The Appeal supports both Parish and Archdiocesan ministries and services. The Appeal funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our Parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is Come, Follow Me. We have all received God s love. By financially supporting the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we help to extend God s love to many, many others. As you review the mailing from Cardinal Cupich, please note the ministries and services funded by the Appeal, including the ones that directly support the work of our parish. Then please give generously. Note, when our parish reaches its goal of $53,589.00 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our Parish. 2nd Collection next weekend will be for the maintenance of the parish buildings and grounds. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Re-Registration is now open for the 2018/2019 school year. Financial assistance and scholarships are available Including the new TAX CREDIT SCHOLARSHIP! St. Albert the Great School We are one body Please join us for our OPEN HOUSE Sunday, January 28th 9am 12pm Thursday, February 1st 5pm 8pm Find Your Passion Find your Dream! Presentation in Roger s Hall On February 1st @ 6PM All Parish children and parents are welcome. Everyone is invited! Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out Repent! before he calls his new followers. Come after me, Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today s Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for completely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Though few of us will experience consequences that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heeding the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins, and believe in the good news of salvation. February 3rd & 4th after each Mass we will have for sale our parish famous Cream Pies! Your support will be greatly appreciated. E n j o y! Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza Moi Drodzy Bracia i Siostry! Proszę Was o dar nieustannej modlitwy w intencji Dorocznej Kwesty Katolickiej oraz z wielką pokorą proszę Was o hojność na jej rzecz. Koszt tych telewizorów to około 1,000.00 $. Jestem z Was bardzo dumny i ogarniam Was wszystkich moją kapłańską gorliwą modlitwą. Jezu, ufam Tobie! Fr.

What looks like a beautiful narrow brick mansion alongside a canal is a clever disguise for a very well-preserved seventeenth-century home and a secret church. During the Reformation, the Netherlands was divided into Protestant Holland and the Spanish Netherlands, now known as Belgium, a Catholic stronghold. Protestant reformers seized all the Catholic parishes in Holland and de-catholicized them. New laws forbade the celebration of the Mass in public. St. Nicholas Church was renamed Old Church by the new owners, and the dispossessed Catholics got to work hiding St. Nicholas Parish in the upper floors of this mansion. Other Catholics did the same thing, but this is the only hidden church that survives today. Sunday Mass is still celebrated here. It s a beautiful hideaway, with nothing spared in regard to marble, gilding, a pipe organ, and classic Dutch painting. A few steps away, the Old Church, begun in 1250, stands emptied of the statues and carvings of its Catholic days, its windows replaced by plain glass. The new tenants gave up when it came to the ceiling, which is still painted with saints, biblical scenes, and merchant ships. The Dutch reformers were tolerant sorts, and as long as the Catholics kept out of sight, they were out of mind. Catholicism was at last tolerated in Holland after 1853, but in 1924 when the International Eucharistic Congress was held in Amsterdam, processions of Catholics were still forbidden in the streets. Today, Roman Catholics are about 19 percent of the population, and there s no need for any of them to hide in the attic. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
