Devine Page 2 Providing Relief to Families Facing Devastation Hurricane Harvey, a powerful Category 4 hurricane with winds of 130 mph, made landfall near Rockport, Texas early on the morning of Saturday, August 26. The storm hit at peak intensity, and has brought catastrophic flooding to the Gulf Coast some areas in Central Texas have received nearly 50 inches of rain. The National Weather Service described the disaster as beyond anything experienced. Scores of people have been stranded, and rescue efforts have been impeded by impassable roads and bridges. Throughout the state, over 300,000 people have lost electricity, and there have been reports of at least 8 fatalities and countless injuries, with the death toll expected to rise in the coming days. In his USCCB statement, Cardinal DiNardo, the Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, called all Catholics and people of good will to offer their prayers, solidarity and support to victims and survivors of Hurricane Harvey: May God, the Lord of mercy and compassion, protect all who are still in danger, and bring safety to those who are missing. May He care in a special way for those who were already homeless, or without support and resources, before the disaster. We pray in thanksgiving for the first responders who are risking their lives to save others at this very moment. We include in our intentions the everyday heroes reaching out to help their neighbors in need, those who, like the Good Samaritan, cannot walk by a person in need without offering their hand in aid. My Dearly Beloved! From the Pastor s Desk Our hearts go out to the victims of the devastating hurricane "Harvey" and flooding in Texas. All of us, as the disciples of Jesus we need to help our brothers and sisters not only by the gift of prayer but also by financial help. It is impossible to remain indifferent while looking at the devastation, crying children, people suffering the loss of their homes and even lives. Today our church and all churches of the Archdiocese of Chicago will take up a second collection to help all affected by the hurricane and flood. Please be generous! Throughout the month of September, we will collect bottled water, which will be delivered to Houston, Texas. Let us remember that water is a symbol of life! We ask each family in our parish to buy at least one case of water and drop it off at the parish office (administration building). My Dear Friends! If anyone owns a trucking business and would like to help with this project by lending us a truck to deliver the water, please contact me or the parish office. I embrace with prayer all those who are willing to take part in this important undertaking. I know that all of you have good, sensitive hearts and never turn away from those who suffer. I am convinced that our water collection will be a great success. I also know that you will always remember: Kindness is something very simple. One should never look out only for oneself. We are always available and ready to help others. The water collection starts tomorrow! Next week, (September 17) from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm we will celebrate in the parish our "Second Harvest Day. There will be a plenty of good food, music, beer, games and fun for children, face painting, etc. All proceeds from this event will benefit our parish. Let's spend this time together, it is really worth it! I hope to see you next week at the parish "Harvest Day" celebrations. They kept communities safe, and were there to alert them to any impending danger or attack. Before locks, alarms, and security systems, watchmen were the protectors, the safety measure. So when the Lord charges Ezekiel as a watchman today, it is a weighty charge. So weighty, we learn, that if Ezekiel fails to sound the alarm for those around him and they perish in a state of wickedness, Ezekiel will be held responsible! This profound connection between God s will on earth and in heaven is repeated in today s Gospel, where Jesus instructs us that we are to be the security force, the watchers placed on alert that nowhere in the Body of Christ, the church, will there be any two members of the one Body who are not reconciled. Scripture tells us that Jesus reconciled all things in heaven and on earth through the blood of his cross. But we are given the mission to continue that reconciliation on earth as in heaven through our ceaseless efforts to be, as Paul would write, ambassadors of reconciliation. Let us not get too comfortable thinking that we are responsible only for keeping our own lives from the path of wickedness and disagreement. We are also held accountable for the lives of the members of Christ s body around us. Why join the knights of Columbus? Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza Moi Kochani! Wszyscy mocno przeżywamy wydarzenia spowodowane niszczycielskim huraganem Harvey i powodzią w stanie Texas. Jako uczniowie Jezusa musimy ludziom potrzebującym pomagać nie tylko przez dar modlitwy, ale także przez konkretną finansową pomoc. Nie możemy być obojętni widząc ogrom zniszczeń, płacz dzieci i utratę przez ludzi dobytku całego życia. Dlatego dzisiaj w naszym kościele, a także w naszej Diecezji Chicago druga ofiara na tacę przeznaczona jest na pomoc dla wszystkich dotkniętych przez ten huragan i powódź. Bardzo was proszę o hojne wsparcie! Także przez cały miesiąc wrzesień będziemy zbierać paczki wody, którą poźniej zawieziemy do Houston w Texas. Pamiętajmy, że woda jest symbolem życia! Niech każda rodzina naszej parafii zakupi choć jedną dużą paczkę wody. Tę wodę proszę przynosić do budynku administracyjnego (kancelarii). Drodzy! Może ktoś z was ma firmę transportową i chciałby nam pomóc w tym dziele. Może ktoś z was chciałby także użyczyć nam ciężarówkę do przewiezienia wody itp. Osoby chętne proszę o kontakt z moją osobą. Wszystkich darczyńców, chętnych do pomocy w tym dziele ogarniam gorącą i życzliwą modlitwą. Wiem, że macie dobre i wrażliwe serca oraz nigdy nie przechodzicie obojętnie wobec krzywdy drugiego człowieka. Jestem przekonany, że wasza odpowiedź na zbiórkę wody dla powodzian będzie wielkim sukcesem. Wiem, że zawsze pamiętacie o słowach, że: Dobroć jest czymś bardzo prostym. In its deepest origins, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is the feast of a dedication of a church, since in the year 335 the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was dedicated on September 13, and on the following day the true cross discovered by St. Helena was brought outside to the faithful for veneration. It is a great feast of the Eastern Church, which often marks it by having the whole assembly prostrate themselves on the floor honoring the life-giving cross. At the core of the tradition is the quest of Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, to acquire the cross and the nails of the Crucifixion from the ruins of Jerusalem. When she was satisfied that she had found them, thanks to the healing of a sick man whose body was placed on the cross, she had her son fund the building of the great basilica. The history of the relic is complicated, especially because it was carried off by invading Persians in the year 614 and went missing for fifteen years. Thursday s feast does not celebrate the relic, but rather the life-giving cross from which salvation flows.
