(773) Reflecting on God s Word Since early this morning Dean has been working to prepare dinner for his wife Sheila s birthday. While the bread dough rose he bought fresh vegetables, cheese, and pasta. As the aroma of baking bread illed the house Carla helped her father cook his special sauce. Later there were vegetables to prepare, pie to bake, presents to wrap, and the table to set with little George s hand-painted placemats. At last Dean calls out Dinner s ready! The family gathers and the prayer begins: Bless us, O Lord and these thy gifts, which we are about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord. Amen. In shared meals the gift of food is made more nourishing by the gift of community. Today s Scripture invites us to unwrap some of the gifts that we bless and receive in our Eucharistic meal. Christ shares the gift of himself in the word, the cup, and the loaf. Like Dean s family, we in the community also share the gift of ourselves with one another in our sharing of the Body and Blood of Christ. The living, breathing Body of Christ in the community nourishes the life of Christ in each of us when we sit down together at the Eucharistic table. Even if it s only a year or two old, the word Amen has resounded off those walls countless times at the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer and as the faithful have come forward to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. Today s feast is about those Amens offered in faith, offered in times of trouble or doubt, spoken in joy, spoken mindlessly, but all given to God in a multitude of ways. It is our very lives that lie behind our Amens and are touched by the presence of Christ, the presence we celebrate today. More importantly, we celebrate the love of Christ for us shown in the sacri ice on Calvary and that he continues to give to us in every celebration of the Eucharist. SPIRITUAL ADOPTION SEVEN and EIGHT MONTH DEVELOPING BABY The Lord called me from birth, from my mother s womb he gave me my name. Is 49:1 You're in the home stretch with your spiritually adopted baby. The baby is completely formed and has been since 8 weeks. All he/she is doing now is gaining weight and making the mother uncomfortable. She's not worried now. In a short time, her baby will be born. She has planned to bring the baby home or to place the baby for adoption. Either way, she knows she can receive the assistance she needs from Catholic Social Services. Your baby's mother appreciates the prayers you have said for her and her baby throughout the pregnancy. It hasn't been easy, but your prayers have given her the grace to seek the help she needs. Spiritual Adoption Prayer My dear Jesus, together with Mary, mother, who took care of you so lovingly, and of St. Joseph, strong man of faith, protected you both, I pray to you for health of the unborn child, whom I have spiritually adopted. This feast reminds us that the goal of the catechumen s journey through Lent is not the baptismal font at Easter, but rather the experience of Pentecost. It is all about life lived in the Spirit s embrace in relationship to the Body of Christ, which is found both on the table and at the table. The season of con irmation is also drawing to a close, and this feast serves as a reminder that this sacrament, a solemn sending from font to table, is keyed to renewed vigor. Con irmation has sometimes been sadly misunderstood as a kind of graduation from religious formation, but it is nothing of the sort. It is about being led by the Lord Jesus to the place where the Spirit lourishes, and where the gifts of the Spirit are most easily detectable. After next week we will resume our consideration of the sacrament of con irmation, its rich and somewhat tangled history, its challenging theology, and its changing celebration. Rev. 5 June 22, 2014 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Easter Sunday 2013, Pope Francis encouraged each person to be a witness of charity. The Holy Father has continued to remind each of us through his words and actions that we must serve our brothers and sisters in order to be true disciples of Christ. In dioceses where many are dependent on the Church for social and pastoral support, as well as regions where Catholics are persecuted for their faith, His Holiness extends his charity to those most in need. This year s Peter s Pence Collection provides each of us the opportunity to be a witness of charity. In addition, our inancial support of this annual collection will assist Pope Francis in strenghtening dioceses, religious orders and struggling communities of faith. I thank you for your generosity.
