Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Page Three Days of Paschal Mystery The three days, beginning at sundown on Holy Thursday, commemorate the mystery of our redemption: Christ's death, his burial, and his resurrection. Baptized into the death of Jesus in order to rise with him, each Christian life repeats the mystery of dying to self and rising to new life. Each of the days of the Paschal Triduum signi ies a stage in the central mystery of Christian life. The Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday features the distinctive action of the Washing of the Feet. In this act of service, Jesus presents us with an emblem for his entire life, given on the cross for all people in obedience to the Father. On the following afternoon, the liturgy of Good Friday centers on the ful illment of Christ's gift to us on the cross. Every Christian begins by accepting God's will and then being willing to serve one another in love, just as Jesus did. Holy Saturday is the day Jesus spent in the tomb, having truly died a physical death. This day also represents the apparent failure of Christ s ministry as well as the end of all the disciples' dreams. Everything seemed over. Though we Christians know how the story turns out, we all have our own "Holy Saturdays," periods of darkness and apparent defeat that stretch our faith to the breaking point. The challenge is to wait in hope, praying for the grace to persevere in faith in our tragedies. Even now, the tragedy of Jesus' cruci ixion appears so inal that the third moment of the paschal mystery is almost unbelievable: the appearance of new life where none was expected. No one could have predicted what would happen, and nobody was ready for it-not Mary Magdalene, not Peter or John, certainly not Thomas. For the Christian, celebrating Easter means accepting the new life in Christ that God has given us. This can be surprisingly dif icult: we can get so stuck in waiting that we are unable to recognize something new. We can even get stuck in a kind of self-sacri ice that makes us reluctant to accept something from another. Accordingly, the celebration of Easter goes on for 50 days until it culminates in Pentecost, a celebration that acknowledges our dependence on God for every grace, including understanding, wisdom and knowledge.
