(773) Reflecting on God s Word When you think of a king coming before his people, the image of someone riding on a donkey does not come to mind. If the Lone Ranger had Silver and Roy Rogers had Trigger, a similar white stallion would seem most itting for a king. Not an ass, even a purebred one. But this image from the prophet Zechariah is one that must have planted itself in the imagination of Jesus, for that is how he made his great entrance into Jerusalem and was greeted as the Messiah. It was not the entrance of a powerful warrior, but of a gentle king whose rule would bring peace to the nations. I have sometimes regretted the loss of St. Christopher from the calendar of saints. That legendary saint, whose name means Christ-bearer, signaled that the risen Lord had now chosen to be carried by his disciples. We bear him in our bodies, minds, and hearts. We bring him to the world when we work to bring peace and healing and knowledge of the Father. This necessitates being willing to take on the yoke of Jesus. I remember once hearing that the yokes Jesus made in the carpenter shop under Joseph s guidance rode easily on the shoulders of the animals, distributing evenly the weight they pulled. The yoke Jesus offers us is his teaching about the kingdom of heaven and how to live in it while in the world. SETTING ASIDE THE WEAPONS OF WAR Why, we might ask the prophet Zechariah today, would God want to banish chariots and horses? The answer follows: because they are used to violate God s reign of peace, along with the warrior s bow. In the days of Zechariah, chariots and horses were highpriced items used only for war-making. They were the aircraft carriers and nuclear missiles of his day. And for his culture, which thought of any king as being a military leader irst and foremost, a king riding on a lowly beast of burden to proclaim peace without horses, chariots, and bows would have set his listeners topsyturvy. This lowly, beast-riding king of peace, we believe, was ful- illed in Jesus, gentle and humble of heart. In a world torn by military strife often generated by differing religious views, and even in our own lives and homes where we are often at war over the tiniest things, we would do well to stop and consider to what degree we are willing to be like that king whose way of gentleness and humility is the way for us to ind rest for our weary souls. CAMILLUS NEIGHBORS Please be aware that there have been some suspicious activities in our neighborhood. People are approaching our neighbors in their yards and ringing their door bells saying they are with the Water Department and are there to check their water pipes. They are wearing "worker" vests but THEY ARE NOT FROM THE WATER DEPARTMENT. There are usually 2 men but there could be more. While one of the men is taking down information from the home owner, the other is rummaging through the house. If you experience this situation, do not open your doors and call your local police department immediately. PLEASE do not let anyone in your house, unless they have been checked out-namely you have contacted the City or a business because of a problem. Also they should be wearing an ID tag, Also, please do not leave doors open when doing yard work, etc. Those days of "trusting" are gone. Like the saying goes: "Trust but Verify". Spread the word about strategies for preventing skin cancer! Did You Know? The skin is the body s largest organ! Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US. More than 2 million people are diagnoses annually. Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer and will account for more than 76,000 cases in Caucasians and men over 50 are at a higher risk of developing melanoma than the general population. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. According to current estimates, 40-50% of Americans who live to age 65 have skin cancer at least once. Good News! Skin cancer is almost 100% curable if found early and treated right away Ways to Prevent Skin Cancer Seek shade between 10AM and 3PM. Do not burn Cover up with clothing, hats and UV blocking sunglasses. Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths. Use SPF with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. Apply 1 oz. of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Keep newborns out of the sun. Look for skin changes of any kind.
