The ritual book used for baptism from the sixteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries advised priests to guard against giving ridiculous or pagan names to babies consigned to their ministry. In 1666 the diocesan ritual of Bourges in France was even more exacting, telling the priests to see to it that boys were named after male saints, girls after female saints, and no one got named after a festival. Yet, records from that very diocese in later years shows a few babies named Toussaint (after All Saints Day) along with other creative expressions. In Spain, no one has ever hesitated to name babies after festivals, especially girls after Our Lady, and so there are names like Concepción, Asunción, and of course Dolores (after Our Lady of Sorrows). In Italy and Spain is it likely that a child will receive the name of the saint of the day of its birth. Today s rites of initiation for adults and infants urge the giving of a Christian name, and in the case of an adult whose given name expresses a pagan or unseemly idea (Baal and Whiskey come to mind), there is a formal rite during the catechumenate for the giving of a Christian name. In such a case, it would make sense for the change to be registered with civil authorities as well. For all Christians, the idea of having a heavenly patron to pray to on life s journey is reason enough to pay attention to this treasure in our tradition. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. R.C.I.A... a Journey of Faith RCIA is a preparation of adults seeking full membership in the Roman Catholic Church. Dear Friends! Behind us, and before us, another intense week. Today, once again, with all my heart I would like to thank Mrs. Mary Shipman for making over 2 thousand delicious cream pies. We sold all of them and the sale proceeds were deposited into the parish account. I promise that next time we will have more cream pies so that once again all our parishioners may get to enjoy them. Thank you to all who helped Mrs. Shipman in their preparation and sale. Thank you to all who bought them. You are the best in the world! Saturday, October 8th at 5:00 p.m. we will celebrate a special (bilingual) Mass during which, Bishop Andrew Wypych will officially appoint me as the pastor of St. Albert the Grat parish. I ask that on that day we all gather in the church as one big loving family. I invite all of you to attend this Mass; all parish groups, organizations, schools operating at our parish, families with their children and all who come to pray in our church. Pokémon Goes to St. Albert the Great School! St. Albert the Great School in Burbank kicked off their first day of school with a Pokémon theme! Knowing that "Pokémon Go" is popular with young people today, Principal Jodi McLawhorn centered the day around a Pokémon theme. Students were greeted in the morning with a real, live Pikachu! Pikachu greeted all the children with fist bumps and waves hello! Pikachu also posed for pictures with the children and their parents! Pikachu settled any first day of school jitters with his big smile! Once school began, Pikachu made his way through the halls, passing out Pokémon cards to the children. He made stops in all the lower grades to say hello and to pose for some class photos. Faculty and students then gathered in church for Mass to begin our year according to our yearly theme of: "One faith, One family, One future. St. Albert the Great". Following Mass, we gathered on the steps to our school (with our faculty in their new faculty shirts), as one family to mark this wonderful day. This day will be forever remembered with the full school picture we took on the stairs. As the day went on, faculty and staff hid Pokémon cards throughout the school. Students were encouraged to find as many hidden Pokémon cards as they could throughout the day. At the end of the day, each class sent down the student with the highest number of cards to the Principal's office for a prize! All in all, over 500 Pokemon cards were "found", and the students had a fun, welcoming, and enjoyable 1st day of school! Page 8
