Page Two May 6, 2012 Spiritual Reflection HEARING AID These days the word obedience has fallen on hard times. To most people it means surrendering control over actions and behavior. However, the English word obedience comes from the Latin obaudire, which means to listen well. Let s face it, many of us have an unconscious aversion to others. We want to be around them, but not get too familiar. We put up emotional fences because we fear we will be controlled or threatened by them, or that we will somehow be personally diminished. But is it true that committed relationships limit our growth and personalities when we live and work closely with other people in a marriage, a family, a parish, or community? God calls every one of us into being and created us to grow into our full potential only in communion with others. Yet how do we do this? How do we avoid the pitfalls of isolation on the one hand and abusive, destructive relationships on the other? Are we deprived when we sacrifice for the sake of others? We begin by learning to repent and to obey. The English word repent in scripture translates the Greek word metanoia, or change one s mind (or heart). In the scriptures, repentance and true obedience go hand in hand. We must listen responsibly to hear the word of repentance. Through repentance we learn our limitations as well as our strengths. Listening also requires responsible action. In a family or a parish or other church organization, wonderful, blessed things can happen when each and every person listens and responds appropriately to what is asked of them. Truly, God is in the midst of such a place, and there are no limits to what can be done in love for God s glory and for the salvation of all humankind. Copyright 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. May is the month during which Mary, Most Holy, Queen of the Rosary, is venerated. Please remember to take time out of your busy days to pray this Marian prayer! TRWAĆ W PANU... W Biblii często pojawia się obraz winnicy na oznaczenie narodu wybranego. W Ewangelii św. Jana temat winnicy został pogłębiony i włączony w kontekst Ostatniej Wieczerzy. Modlitewna zaduma nad tą przypowieścią pozwoli nam wydobyć z niej istotne przesłanie naszego Pana, zostawione Kościołowi wszystkich czasów. Obraz winnego krzewu ukazuje nierozdzielną więź, jaka istnieje pomiędzy Chrystusem zmartwychwstałym a Jego wiernymi. Zostaliśmy wszczepieni w Jego mistyczne Ciało i żyjemy Jego życiem. A On okazał się posłuszny woli Ojca aż do śmierci. Obfity owoc doskonałego posłuszeństwa mogą przynieść tylko ci, którzy trwają w Chrystusie. Przecież to On powiedział te wiele znaczące słowa: Bo beze Mnie nic uczynić nie możecie. Znakiem owego trwania będzie skuteczność modlitwy wierzących: Jeżeli we Mnie trwać będziecie, a słowa Moje w was, poproście o cokolwiek chcecie, a to się wam spełni. Ks. Idzi

Page Six May 6, 2012 Office of the Archbishop Post Office Box 1979 Chicago, Illinois 60690-1979 Dear Friends in Christ: May 2012 This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you... Love one another. John 15: 9-17 This year, these words of Jesus to His disciples in the Gospel of John are proclaimed throughout the world on the 6th Sunday of Easter. As we celebrate Mother s Day in the United States, Jesus command to love one another takes on special meaning for all families in our country. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, this day provides a special gift of love and support to mothers, grandmothers and families who are raising their children in poverty, hunger and homelessness, as we take up the Catholic Charities Collection on Mother s Day in parishes throughout Cook and Lake Counties. Your Mother s Day gift to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago will assist thousands of struggling families and vulnerable children of all races and religions who rely on us to meet their basic human needs of food, clothing and shelter - as well as those parents and children who benefit from Catholic Charities professional services such as stable, affordable housing; job training; counseling and child care. Since Catholic Charities founding in 1917, through two World Wars and the Great Depression, as well as the rising and falling economic tides of every decade, Catholic Charities has increasingly offered hope and help to struggling families, children and seniors of all faiths. Catholic Charities conducts 157 programs at 162 locations in Cook and Lake Counties and annually reaches more than one million men, women and children in need. These services include accredited child-care programs, family and individual counseling, home-delivered meals for seniors, affordable apartments for low-income seniors, the St. Leo Residence for Veterans, emergency food pantries and weekly suppers. Through your generosity to Catholic Charities, you offer Easter joy and a future of hope to mothers, fathers, grandparents and caregivers whose lives are governed by poverty as they struggle daily to provide food, clothing, schooling and safety to their most precious possessions, their children. In the Gospel, Jesus shows us the nature of His unconditional love, and invites us to live in His love. As followers of Jesus, we strive to imitate the sheer magnitude of his generosity to us by caring for mothers and their families in need. Thank you for your generosity to our brothers and sisters who rely on our love and the services of Catholic Charities. May the Risent Christ bless all mothers and their loved ones with the fullness of His love. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago
