2 Page Two October 14, 2012 Spiritual Reflection CAMELS AND NEEDLES Not long ago a group of professors at Boston College studied people in America who are super-rich, who have $25 million or more. There are approximately 115,000 of them. Some were born into wealth, others made their wealth, while a few fell into sudden riches. You might think that having no money worries would simply make life a breeze, but you would be mistaken. Surprisingly, those who participated in the study revealed that wealth affects every aspect of their lives, and not always for the good. Marriage and friendship can be difficult ( Do they love me or love my money? ). Rich parents worry that their children will do nothing worthwhile with their lives. In ancient times the Jews believed that wealth was a sign of divine favor. To the early descendants of Abraham, wealth meant owning large flocks of sheep, goats, and cattle. By the time Jesus encountered the rich young man in today s Gospel, people acquired wealth by farming the land and through trade. Jesus challenged the man to give away his possessions to free himself of the burden of wealth that was keeping him from the fullest possible life with God. Wealth in itself is not evil, but evil can result if we come to feel owned by our possessions. Modern Jewish teaching is not far from our own Christian understanding of wealth. The things of this world are important, but temporary. Wealth, whether in the form of skills, time, or money, is not an end but a means: a means to create a home; raise children; provide hospitality; to give time, attention, love, charity, and money; and to share with church and community for the well-being of all. Nauczycielu dobry, co mam czynić, aby osiągnąć życie wieczne? (Mk. 10, 17). Oto pytanie pewnego szlachetnego młodzieńca. Miał wszystko: bogactwo, szczęśliwą młodość i dobroć serca. Można byłoby powiedzieć, że był prawie idealny. A teraz pyta Jezusa o to, co jest najważniejsze: w jaki sposób zapewnić sobie życie wieczne? Spodobał się Jezusowi, więc chciał go uczynić jeszcze szczęśliwym i lepszym. Powołał go, żeby dzielił jego życie, żeby był apostołem. Idź, sprzedaj wszystko, co masz i rozdaj ubogim, a będziesz miał skarb w niebie. Potem przyjdź i chodź za Mną (Mk. 10, 21). Oto najpewniejsza droga do życia wiecznego - poważny i zdecydowany krok. Bogaty, młody człowiek nie zrobi jednak tego kroku. Zbyt wielka byłaby to ofiara dla jego serca. Drogę zatarasowała mu nieprzebyta przeszkoda - jego bogactwo - dlatego też odszedł zasmucony. Zasmucił przez to również i Jezusa. Pogrzebana zostana wielka nadzieja - w szlachetnym sercu młodego człowieka bogactwo pokonało Boga. Bogactwo często wydaje się fałszywym bogiem. Często wtedy sens pracy i życia widzi człowiek w gromadzeniu i konsumowaniu. Swoją wartość i wielkość umieszcza w rzeczach, które kupuje. Taki człowiek staję się zdolny do każdej zbrodni i każdej podłości, byleby tylko jak najwięcej nagromadzić, jak najbardziej się wzbogacić. Taki człowiek bardzo często przemienia się w drapieżne zwierzę o okrutnej nieczułej duszy i krwawych pazurach. Niejeden człowiek sądzi, że ma już wszystko, kiedy ma pełny brzuch i pełną kasę. Tymczasem ma najczęściej tylko nieszczęście i niepokój. Byli także i tacy, którzy z chwilą stania się bogatymi stali się złymi ludźmi. Banknoty i czeki nie powinny zniewolić naszego serca. Biedny jest ten człowiek, który jest wart tylko tyle, co jego ubrania, meble, domy, samochód czy bankowe konto! Chrześcijanin jednak powinien być zawsze świadomy, że to nie jest jego bóg i że nie to stanowi jego szczęście. Dla kogo zaś pieniądz jest wszystkim, Bóg dla niego jest niczym i taki człowiek właściwie nic nie posiada. Na każdego z nas przyjdzie bowiem kiedyś taka chwila, że musimy tutaj pozostawić nasze bogactwa, a na tamten świat pójdziemy sami. Właściwie to nie sami - pójdą za nami nasze dobre uczynki. Więc póki jest nam dany tu na ziemi czas zasługiwania na niebo, to nie marnujmy tej wielkiej i niepowtarzalnej szansy. Bowiem egzaminu powtórkowego z naszego życia nie będzie nam dane zdawać po raz drugi! -ks. Idzi-
