Page Two January 5, 2014 Reflecting on God s Word They were men in love with the lights of night astrologers, star-gazers, meaning-makers tuned in to the signs in the heavens, as Matthew tells it. A strange star moving across the sky led them into Israel. Arriving in Jerusalem, they asked where the newborn king of the Jews was, so they could offer homage. Herod was less than delighted, indeed greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him, at hearing of a new king on the block (Matthew 2:3). But he assembled the chief priests and the scribes, who remembered that the prophet Micah had proclaimed that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. So they set out again, with Herod s duplicitous request whispered into their ears. The star reappeared and led them to the house where the child and his mother were. Falling down in worship, they offered gifts, and went back home. End of story as we like to remember it. Of course, that is not the end. Receiving no word, Herod is enraged and orders the death of all children under the age of two. Joseph, Mary, and the child flee to Egypt. Power does not welcome competition, even in the form of a child. But God wills all people to know salvation. Jesus came to draw all into the reign of God and to empower them to live the God-life that is the Father s gift. The darkness of evil continues to threaten but it will not overcome as long as there are those who seek the light, follow it, and allow it to lead them to the child. James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. GWIAZDA I DROGA Szczęśliwi byli owi Mędrcy ze Wschodu, bo ujrzeli gwiazdę i poszli za nią. Nie zrazili się trudnościami i znaleźli Chrystusa. Szukali nowo-narodzonego króla żydowskiego, a znaleźli Boga - a wraz z Bogiem znaleźli cel i sens swojego życia. W ten sposób zapoczątkowali oni wielki korowód poszukiwaczy Boga. Nie wiemy dokładnie ilu ich było. Tradycja łacińska mówi o trzech i nadała im imiona: Kacper, Melchior i Baltazar. Nie wiemy dokładnie co to była za gwiazda, którą ujrzeli i za którą szli. W każdym razie oni wypełniali słowa proroka Izajasza: I pójdą narody do twojego światła, królowie do blasku twojego wschodu. W każdym razie wiara była ich właściwą i zasadniczą gwiazdą przewodnią. Wszystko inne mogło być znakiem, pobudką czy okazją do pójścia i szukania Zbawiciela. Wiara ich potykała się o rożne trudności i niepowodzenia a może i wątpliwości. Przecież po ludzku mówiąc, mieli prawo do zniechęcenia z powodu zniknięcia gwiazdy, na widok biednego domku i Dzieciny. To, co ujrzeli, z pewnością nie pokrywało się z wizją, jaką nosili w duszy o tym Królu. Nikt też ich szumnie nie powitał, ale też i nikt się nie przeraził z powodu ich przyjścia do Chrystusa. Każdy z nas ma swoją gwiazdę i drogę. Każdy człowiek jest poszukiwaczem Boga. Wszyscy Go potrzebują, choć o tym nie myślą i nie wiedzą, szukamy Boga, bo serce nasze jest wiecznie godne szczęścia a rozum prawdy. I właśnie nasze serce jest tą pierwszą gwiazdą, która każe nam szukać Boga wszędzie. Każdy z nas ma swoją gwiazdę i drogę. Ta gwiazda to nasz rozum i serce, a droga - całe nasze życie wraz ze wszystkimi okolicznościami. Stąd łatwo znaleźć Boga, bo mamy Jego ślady wokoło nas. A gdy potykamy się i gubimy, gdy zawodzi nasz umysł i zmysły - to wtedy przychodzi nam z pomocą Kościół ze swoimi środkami - sakramentami, by wzmocnić światło naszej gwiazdy, by rozjaśnić nam drogę, by posilić naszą duszę. Łatwo jest więc znaleźć Boga, bo i Bóg nas jednocześnie szuka i wychodzi nam na spotkanie. Jednak z drugiej strony, jest nam Go trudno znaleźć. Bo od dni Adama uciekamy przed Nim, barykadujemy się i zagłuszamy Jego głos. Szukamy często specjalnej drogi i specjalnego znaku. Jednak dla nas ludzi najpewniejszą drogą w poszukiwaniu Boga jest droga DOBREJ WOLI I POKORY. To była także droga Trzech Mędrców. Trzej Mędrcy uczą nas także jednej prawdy, że człowiek powinien pokonywać wszelkie trudności, by dojść w swoim życiu do Boga. Im wcześniej to osiągnie i zrozumie, tym wcześniej napełni swe serce największą wartością, czyli samym Bogiem. Każda Msza św., w którek z wiarą uczestniczymy pomaga nam w osiągnięciu tego celu - zbliża nas do Boga. Ks. Idzi

Page Four January 5, 2014 The Epiphany of the Lord The story of the Magi is relatively simple. It is the story of searching and finding. In those few words, we also have the heart of the matter of the Christian life. We search intensely and find the Lord and do him homage. With that experience of finding him and that experience of adoration, like the Magi, we return to our routines of daily existence but changed by the one whom we have encountered. When we consider our family life in this Year of Strong Catholic Parents, we recognize that we do not travel as the Magi did. We do, however, search as they did. And that is very important. The Magi begin their search with their observation of a star. They leave home. They endure the hardships of the journey. They seek counsel wherever they can find it. They cannot and will not rest until they can move toward their destination. Their perseverance in searching inspires us today. When families move forward today, they can feel the pressures to conform and to settle down for less, whether that is material well being or social status or whatever. The story of the Magi tells us that nothing less than finding the King of Kings will satisfy the desires that began our searching. A strong Catholic family will demonstrate the versatility and flexibility of the Magi along with their determined vision and hope of finding what God has to offer. We can easily imagine the Magi encouraging each other on the journey, especially in those moments when the searching seemed to be futile. Here, too, we understand how strong Catholic parents and a strong Catholic family is a community of mutual encouragement, sustained by God s promise. People of faith hold each other in the mystery of God s love and so encourage one another, as we do every time we celebrate the Eucharist of the Lord, until he comes again.

PRISCILLA INTERNATIONAL CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION We would like to invite all parishioners and guests to our Second Annual Christmas Celebration on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 5:00 PM in McGowan Hall, below the church. This celebration grants us the opportunity to get to know each of our St. Priscilla brothers and sisters and to gather as one St. Priscilla Family for this Christmas Season. During this celebration, we invite parishioners to share their various Christmas traditions by bringing a favorite dish. Tea, coffee, cake and other refreshments will be included. Let us gather together to enjoy foods of different countries. (American,Polish, Italian, German, Irish, Filipino, etc.) Good food, good company, entertainment, and blessing by Fr. Idzi. Bringing a dish is not necessary to join. This celebration is NO CHARGE! Doesn t get any better than this! Zapraszamy naszych parafian i gości na Drugie Doroczne Świętowanie Bożego Narodzenia w sobotę, dnia 11 stycznia 2014 o godz. 5:00 wieczorem do Sali McGowan pod kościołem. To spotkanie da nam okazję bliższego poznania się nawzajem jako członkowie parafii Św. Pryscylli, jak również da nam okazję stania się jedną rodziną w tym świątecznym czasie. Podczas tego spotkania będziemy dzielić się róznymi zwyczajami Bożonarodzeniowymi, kosztując także różne potrawy świąteczne. Można także przynieść swoje ulubione świąteczne potrawy. Kawa, herbata, i ciasto będą serwowane na miejscu. Przyjdźmy w tym dniu aby móc cieszyc się potrawami z różnych krajów. (Potrawy: Amerykańskie, Polskie, Włoskie, Niemieckie, Irlandzkie, Filipińskie, i inne) Dobre jedzenie, wyborne towarzystwo, śpiew kolęd i muzyka, jak również specjalna modlitwa i błogosławieństwo ks. Proboszcza Idziego. Wstęp wolny. Czy może być coś lepszego niż to!
