Page Two January 12, 2014 Reflecting on God s Word Margaret left the massage therapist feeling released from the stress of the last few months, renewed and energized. It was as though the memory in her muscles was erased and their power was unleashed by the therapist s healing touch and aromatic oils. The Rite of Baptism includes a kind of symbolic massage that has a similar purpose. The newly baptized are anointed with fragrant chrism and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live as members of Christ, who was anointed priest, prophet, and king. This connects Christians, the new Israel, to ancient Israel, in which priests, prophets, and kings were anointed to show that the Spirit of God was with them. It also connects us to Jesus, as today s scriptures show. In the second reading we hear that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, after which he went about doing good, for God was with him (Acts 10:38). Matthew shows Jesus being symbolically anointed with the Holy Spirit as God s chosen Son, and the first reading describes what Jesus was chosen to do: establish justice on the earth... open the eyes of the blind... bring out... those who live in darkness (Isaiah 42:1, 7). In short, Jesus was chosen as the Messiah, or Anointed One, of God who would inaugurate the messianic era. The baptized are chosen and anointed as well, to continue Christ s messianic mission in the church. Virginia Stillwell Living God s Word All the baptized have been anointed with the Holy Spirit and power. What is the Spirit empowering you to do? Should you write a letter to your senator about a justice issue, or volunteer at a prison or a school for the blind? Copyright 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Ks. Idzi

Page Four January 12, 2014 Eleventh Annual Valentine s Day Dance The Polish community from St. Priscilla is hosting its Eleventh annual Valentine s Day Dance, which will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 7:00 PM in McGowan Hall. Music will be provided by the GWIAZDA band. The ticket price is $15. Drinks and food are not included in the price. We hope to see you all there! Support the Church in Latin America Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. Catholics in Latin America and the Caribbean face many challenges, including violence and a lack of both clergy and lay leadership to witness to the gospel message. Your support shares the faith with those in need, including the youth of Holy Family Parish in San Miguel, El Salvador. These young people, at high risk for violence, often lack an education in values and critical-thinking skills. To address this need, the parish designed a youth enrichment program. Funded by the Collection, this program gives the youth an opportunity to share their faith and break the cycle of violence in their neighborhoods. Please give generously to next week s Collection. Do tańca będzie przygrywać orkiestra GWIAZDA. Cena biletów $15. Bufet obfitcie zaopatrzony. Do miłego zobaczenia!
The Baptism of the Lord Page Five We had numerous volunteers come out on Friday, December 20th, to help decorate our sanctuary for the Christmas holiday. This is an intimidating task, but with so many helpfulpeople, we were able to beautifully decorate the church with no problem. We are very grateful to everyone who dedicated their time and talents to this cause! May God bless you all! - Fr. Idzi Stacherczak, Pastor - Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Catholics in Latin America and the Caribbean face many challenges when it comes to sharing their faith; yet the light always shines through and hope arises. For example, in the Diocese of San Miguel, El Salvador, the youth of Holy Family Parish are at high risk for violence and gang activity. In response, the parish designed a youth enrichment and leadership program to address young people s need for critical-thinking skills and values education. The parish hopes to help the youth living in these highvulnerability areas create a culture of solidarity and peace within their neighborhoods. The parish currently engages a group of 75 young adults. They will become youth leaders to spread the gospel message in their neighborhoods and break the cycle of violence. In Ecuador, the Diocese of Loja organized a three-day formation program for their catechists, many of whom work in isolated areas. More than 2,500 catechists gathered from around the diocese to participate in training sessions on rural ministry, bible instruction, and other areas of catechesis. One of the participants, Andrea, said that the experience was informative and enriching and that the catechists were able to meet each other and share their diverse experiences. She said that the sessions fortified her spirit so that she can go back to her ministry in the parish and better serve the people in the diocese. The Collection for the Church in Latin America, through projects like these youth and young adult ministry programs, as well as catechesis programs, empowers the faithful of Latin America to deepen their faith and share it with each other and the world. Our (arch)diocese takes up this Collection the weekend of January 19, 2014. Please be generous in this Collection and take this opportunity to share your faith with the youth of Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you and God bless you.
