2 V ETERANS DAY IN THE UNITED STATES In the USA, Veterans Day annually falls on November 11. This day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended the World War I hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany in Veterans are thanked for their services to the United States on Veterans Day. Veterans Day honors those who served the United States in all wars, especially veterans. OBSERVANCE Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans. It is marked by parades and church services and in many places the American flag is hung at half mast. A period of silence lasting two minutes may be held at 11am. Some schools are closed on Veterans Day, while others do not close, but choose to mark the occasion with special assemblies or other activities.veterans Day is officially observed on November 11. HISTORY On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed the day should be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country s service and with gratitude for the victory". There were plans for parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business activities at 11am.In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I and declared that the anniversary of the armistice should be commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. The Congress also requested that the president should "issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples."an Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved on May 13, 1938, which made November 11 in each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day. This day was originally intended to honor veterans of World War I. A few years later, World War II required the largest mobilization of service men in the history of the United States and the American forces fought in Korea. In 1954, the veterans service organizations urged Congress to change the word "Armistice" to "Veterans". Congress approved this change and on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans, where ever and whenever they had served.in 1968 the Uniforms Holiday Bill (Public Law (82 Stat. 250)) made an attempt to move Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of October. The bill took effect in However, this caused a lot of confusion as many states disagreed with this decision and continued to hold Veterans Day activities on November 11. In 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law (89 Stat. 479), which stated that Veterans Day would again be observed on November 11 from 1978 onwards. Veterans Day is still observed on November 11.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We had sixteen hundred years' experience with one Eucharistic Prayer in our repertoire, and the liturgical reforms of the Council of Trent shaped the way we worshiped for four hundred years. In the last years of the Tridentine Mass, the early 1960s, we tended to see children as miniature adults. Fully rooted in the assembly by the decision of Pope Saint Pius X to push Communion back to the age of seven or so from the standard age of twelve to fourteen years during the early 1900s, children were still more tolerated than acknowledged. The Mass was in Latin, and by the 1960s the people had begun to regain their voices in the "dialogue Mass," so the focus was on training little children to recite or sing in Latin. The new attention to the experience of children, their ability to enter into ritual, their spontaneity, their ability to grasp key concepts in faith, felt "untraditional." Yet we can trace in our tradition the ways in which children have long been given a special place in the assembly. From earliest times, boys have served in choirs and certain ministries in monasteries and in parish churches. Girls were sometimes entrusted to nuns, learning liturgical chants and the arts. Yet, in our day, the formation of a Lectionary for children and Eucharistic Prayers suited to them are truly tremendous breakthroughs in our treasury of prayer.

6 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME In Jesus' parable of the ten bridesmaids, only the bridesmaids who brought oil with them had enough to light their lamps. By being prepared, they were welcomed into the wedding feast, while the unprepared ones found the door locked on their return. We may hear Jesus' parable of the bridesmaids who did not take oil for their lamps with them to the wedding, and think, "I would not be so shortsighted. You never know what is going to happen." Yet, are we really prepared to meet our Lord at the moment of our death or in the second coming of Christ? Are we, people who profess faith in Jesus, ready for the bridegroom who is Christ our Lord? Or are we more like the foolish bridesmaids than we want to admit? We know neither the day nor the hour. We must be ready. DON'T BE FOOLISH What is foolish? What is wise? Most of us could name an occasion or two in which we have done something foolish. We did not stop to consider the consequences of our actions and regretted them in the end. The sort of foolishness we are considering here, however, is more than simple impulsive behavior and has eternal consequences. To be foolish in the eyes of God is to ignore the ways in which we know we are called to behave-- toward God, others, and ourselves. The five foolish bridesmaids did not fail in their duties through their actions, but rather through inaction. Like them, we may fail to be ready to meet our Lord, through inaction as much as through our actions. In these final weeks of the liturgical year, we are urged to take stock. How are we, or are we not, living as people whose faith directs our lives? Are we foolish through sinful action or inaction? Do we care for others and for ourselves, as we know we ought? Or do we act instead as though we have all the time in the world in which to embrace Christ's way of mercy, forgiveness, justice, love, and peace? Do we fail to recognize that Christian discipleship is a way of life? BE WISE, BE READY This urging to be ready for Christ's return is not intended to frighten us, but rather to focus our attention on the things that matter. Wisdom lies in seeking God in all things. With the Psalmist, the wise person prays, "My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God" (Psalm 63:2b). Christ's way is not hidden from us, as though we are playing a game of hide and seek. It is "readily perceived" (Wisdom 6:12) by all who love God. We know the way through the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, Christ's great command to wash one another's feet, to love and serve with glad hearts. To act accordingly is to be wise, and those who are wise will be ready. 7 32 NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA Mdr 6,12-16; 1 Tes 4,13-18; Mt 25,1-13 Jezus Chrystus nawiązuje dziś do żydowskich zwyczajów ślubnych, kiedy to rodzice obydwu stron dogadywali się w sprawie posagu panny młodej i uregulowania majątku przyszłych nowożeńców, co nierzadko było przyczyną opóźniania samej ceremonii ślubnej; poczas gdy inni goście oczekiwali ich przybycia po zakończonych negocjacjach. Kiedy negocjacje się przeciągały, nastawała noc, więc dobrze było mieć w zapasie oliwę do podtrzymywania światła lamp, biorąc pod uwagę fakt, że dawniej nie było prądu elektrycznego. O takim właśnie przypadku czuwania przed przyjściem pana młodego mówi dzisiejsza ewangelia podając przykład dziesięciu panien, druchn panny młodej. Połowa z nich niestety, nie miała w sobie tyle roztropności, by zabezpieczyć się w zapasową oliwę i w chwili przyjścia spóźniongo pana młodego były akurat nieobecne, ponieważ w tym właśnie czasie musiały zakupić oliwę na targu. Po powrocie z zakupów drzwi sali weselnej zastały ostatecznie zamknięte, bo ceremonia ślubna się zaczęła i nie można było przeskadzać. Do podobnej sytuacji nawiązuje Jezus obrazując, na czym polega królestwo Boże i kto na pewno będzie do niego przynależał. Tylko ten gość, na wzór roztropnej panny, która w porę zabezpieczyła się w olej do swej lampy. Bo będzie on świadkiem przyjścia pana młodego, na które to przyjście będzie należycie przygotowany. Wyczuwamy, że Jezusowi chodzi tu o moralnie dobre życie każdego z nas prowadzone w ciągłej gotowości na przyjście Pana w ciągu całego naszego życia, a przede wszystkim w momencie śmierci. Moment ten, jak i całe nasze życie, jest oświetlony światłem zmartwychwstania Chrystusa, co nam daje dodatkowy powód do nadziei życia wiecznego z Bogiem. Właśnie o tym poucza nas dziś św. Paweł, kiedy pisze do chrześcijan w Tesalonikach: Nie chcemy, bracia, waszego trwania w niewiedzy co do tych, którzy umierają, abyście się nie smucili jak wszyscy, którzy nie mają nadziei. Jesli bowiem wierzymy, że Jezus istotnie umarł i zmartwychwstał, to również tych, którzy umarli w Jezusie, Bóg wyprowadzi wraz z Nim. Zachowajmy więc roztropność dobrze prowadzonego życia po Bożemu w każdym czasie, by nie być zaskoczonym na przyjście Pana. Na tym polega prawdziwa mądrość życia, o której mówi dzisiejsze pierwsze czytanie, każąc trzymać się blisko Boga. -ks.ryszard Groń 13 LISTOPADA, WSPOMNIENIE ŚW. BENEDYKTA, JANA, MATEUSZA, IZAAKA I KRYSTYNA, PIERWSZYCH MĘCZENNIKÓW POLSKI Pierwsi męczennicy polscy wyniesieni na ołtarze byli eremitami, którzy zobowiązali się do pustelniczego trybu życia oraz do prowadzenia pracy misyjnej. Św. Benedykt i Jan byli Włochami, natomiast Mateusz, Izaak i Krystyn Polakami. ANEGDOTY PAPIESKIE: A to pech! Podobno po wyborze na Papieża, Jan Paweł II powiedział do księdza Dziwisza No widzisz Stasiu i już po nartach. Pierwsi dwaj przybyli do Polski z inicjatywy biskupa Brunona z Kwerfurtu, towarzysza św. Wojciecha, aby założyć klasztor, który głosiłby Słowianom Słowo Boże. Benedykt z Petreum (ur. 970 r.) pochodził z zamożnej włoskiej rodziny z Benewentu, a Jan (ur. 940 r.) z rodziny weneckich patrycjuszy. Obaj wybrali życie pustelnicze, poznali się i zaprzyjaźnili, po przyłączeniu się do św. Romualda. W początkach 1002 r. Benedykt i Jan przybyli na dwór Bolesława Chrobrego, po czym założyli pustelnię we wsi Święty Wojciech (obecnie Wojciechowo) pod Międzyrzeczem. Wkrótce dołączyli do nich Polacy: Mateusz i Izaak (nowicjusze) oraz Krystyn (klasztorny sługa). Szóstym zakonnikiem był Barnaba, który wraz z Benedyktem i Janem przybył do Polski z Włoch (uniknął męczeństwa).bracia oczekiwali na przybycie biskupa Brunona z Kwerfurtu, który udał się do Rzymu po papieskie zezwolenie na prowadzenie misji. Tracący cierpliwość Benedykt wyruszył na spotkanie Brunona, ze względu jednak na zawieruchę polityczną, jaką wywołała śmierć cesarza Ottona III (w styczniu 1002 r.), postanowił wrócić do klasztoru, polecając dalsze poszukiwania Brunona Barnabie. W nocy z 10 na 11 listopada 1003 r. bracia zostali napadnięci przez zbójców i wymordowani. Prawdopodobnie powód napadu był rabunkowy. Kult męczenników zaczął się już od ich pogrzebu. W poczet świętych wpisał ich Jan XVIII.
