Page Two March 1, 2015 Reflecting on God s Word Two of today s readings take us up a mountain. Mountains are sacred places in the scriptures. Moses meets the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob on Mt. Sinai. Elijah has an experience of this same life-giving God on Mt. Horeb. Today Abraham goes up Mt. Moriah in obedience to God s command to take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love (Genesis 22:2) and offer him there as a holocaust. It is hard to get past this reading today and focus only on the story of the Transfiguration. This story of God testing Abraham to see if Abraham will obey is a story of great anguish. See is an important word here: Moriah means the place of seeing. Abraham responds to Isaac s question about a victim, saying God will provide, a word rooted in the Latin word for seeing. God will see to it that there is a victim, just as God will see that Abraham is obedient in all things. Seeing also takes place on Mt. Tabor. Peter, James, and John see Jesus in glory, his clothes dazzlingly white; they see him speaking with Moses and Elijah, representing the law and the prophets; and they see a cloud overshadowing them, and hear a voice calling for their obedience: This is my beloved Son. Listen to him (Mark 9:7). With them, we are invited to see Jesus as the beloved Son whom the Father did not spare... but handed over for us all, as Paul reminds us (Romans 8:32). The mystery of the Cross and Resurrection is an invitation to see God s love for all God s beloved children and trust in it. James A. Martin Barrett BÓG NIE OSZCZĘDZIŁ WŁASNEGO SYNA Przed tygodniem słyszeliśmy wezwanie Jezusa do nawrócenia. Dzisiejsza niedziela przypomina nam prawdę, o której często nie chcemy pamiętać, a mianowicie: żeby się nawrócić, pójść za Jezusem i wejść do Królestwa Bożego, trzeba być gotowym wyrzec się czegoś, poświęcić się. Musimy wyrzec się często własnej woli, swoich nierozumnych pragnień, jeżeli chcemy wypełniać wolę Bożą. Oznacza to, że trzeba iść w kierunku innym, niż zwykle idziemy i żyć inaczej niż zwykle żyjemy. Trzeba być gotowym poświęcić Bogu wszystko wówczas, gdy On tego zażąda. Ta myśl została wyrażona w dzisiejszych czytaniach. Abraham jest gotowy złożyć ofiarę za swojego syna (I czytanie). Natomiast z drugiego czytania dowiadujemy się, że Bóg Syna swego nie oszczędził, ale Go za nas wszystkich wydał. Bez wielkiej ofiary nie ma wielkiej chwały. Bez wielkiej ofiary nie ma karty wstępu do nieba. Bez ofiar nie możemy niczego osiągnąć. Chrześcijaństwo bez ofiary nie jest wogóle chrześcijaństwem. Obecnie zachodzi obawa, że chrześcijaństwo mogą zniszczyć sami chrześcijanie, bo nie są oni już gotowi do ofiar i wyrzeczenia, których domaga się życie chrześcijańskie. Nie są już gotowi do życia według Ewangelii - tak dokładnie i konsekwentnie. Jeżeli pragniemy otrzymać od Boga promocję pod koniec życia, jeżeli pragniemy otrzymać od Boga medal - to musimy być gotowi do wyrzeczeń, do pracy, do trudów, i ofiar. Droga do wiecznej szczęśliwości jest wybrukowana ofiarami. To wąska i stroma droga, która prowadzi do życia. W świetle dzisiejszej Ewangelii - mówiącej o przemienieniu Jezusa na Górze Tabor - rysuje się nam jasno droga wielkopostnej pokuty, okres głębokiej przemiany i wewnętrznego odrodzenia. Ten okres liturgiczny mobilizuje nas do refleksji, do wniknięcia w siebie, aby lepiej zrozumieć sens własnego przeznaczenia. Kiedy uczestniczymy we Mszy świętej, prośmy zawsze Jezusa, by oczyścił nasze serca, pozwólmy, by nas ogarnęła Jego żywa obecność. Niech Chrystus nas pociągnie ku sobie, niech Jego moc okaże się silniejsza od naszych stałych oporów. Niech Jezus żyjący w Eucharystii tak nas zwycięży, jak zwyciężył swoją śmierć i skutecznie prowadzi w nas swoje dzieło przemienienia. Wielki Post, który obecnie przeżywamy ma nam uświadomić i bardziej zrozumieć tę prawdę, że ten czas jest czasem naszego współuczestnictwa w cierpieniach Jezusa Chrystusa, że jest on także egzaminem z naszego chrześcijaństwa. Page Four March 1, 2015 Dear Friends in Christ, - Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Rice Bowl is a Lenten faith-in-action program that invites Catholics to live in solidarity with our poorest and most vulnerable brothers and sisters around the world. It is based on the three Lenten pillars of praying, fasting and almsgiving. This past year, the Archdiocese of Chicago helped raise funds for Victims in the Middle East, Iraq, Central African Republic, Ebola prevention in Africa, and countless other global emergencies. We have been a beacon of hope for our marginalized populations rooted in the Gospel. In addition, over sixty CRS Rice Bowl Grants were given out to local parishes and organizations helping to fight hunger and poverty here in the Chicago area. Please remember that when you give to CRS Rice Bowl, 65 percent of your donations support CRS humanitarian relief programs in nearly one hundred countries worldwide and 35 percent of your donations go to hunger and poverty alleviation efforts in your own community. The Stations of the Cross in English will be held at 6:00 PM, whereas the Stations of the Cross in Polish will be held at 7:00 PM.. We encourage all parishioners to attend these meditative prayers focusing on the suffering and passion of Christ. Retreat Chicago, IL March 27-28, 2015 Pray and share with Sisters from different religious communities in the Chicago area as you discern your vocation. As part of the weekend, you will travel to different religious communities to see and talk to sisters about their day to day lives. The sponsorship consisted of the donation of delicious food that all participants of the dance enjoyed (tasty sausage, ham, beef, cheese, stew, borscht, pastries, etc). Participants of the dance especially liked the Red Borscht and stew. All of these treats were given to us for free. May the Good Lord reward the liberality and generosity of which we in the Parish of St. Priscilla experienced on various occasions. We recommend and invite all our parishioners to try some tasty meats at Pulaski Polish Deli and Bakery.
