Are they holier because of your ministry? Are they more generous, more loving toward others? In short, you are my legacy. To the Most Reverend Blase Cupich - Archbishop of Chicago, Saddened to learn of the death of Cardinal Francis E. George, Archbishop Emeritus of Chicago, I offer heartfelt condolences to you and to the clergy, religious and lay faithful of the Archdiocese. With gratitude for Cardinal George's witness of consecrated life as an Oblate of Mary Immaculate, his service to the Church's educational apostolate and his years of episcopal ministry in the Churches of Yakima, Portland and Chicago, I join you in commending the soul of this wise and gentle pastor to the merciful love of God our heavenly Father. To all who mourn the late Cardinal in the sure hope of the Resurrection, I cordially impart my Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of consolation and peace in the Lord. HIS HOLINESS FRANCIS PP WASHINGTON Cardinal Francis E. George, OMI, retired archbishop of Chicago and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) from 2007-2010, was an exemplary servant of the Church, distinguished by his kindness and intellect, said Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, president of USCCB. Cardinal George, who retired in 2014, died April 17, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 78. -* Rest in Peace Archbishop Kurtz s statement follows: - The death of an exemplary churchman such as Cardinal Francis George brings much sadness at a time of joy and resurrection. We find peace in knowing that, after so much suffering, he has been raised up with our Lord. As archbishop of Chicago and president of the U.S. bishops conference, Cardinal George led as a kindly servant and unmatched intellectual, a man who encouraged everyone to see how God makes us all brother and sister to one another. I join with my brother bishops in thanking God for the gift of his witness and invite all to pray for the faithful repose of his soul. O God, who chose your servant Cardinal Francis from among your Priests, and endowed him with pontifical dignity in the apostolic priesthood, grant, we pray, that he may also be admitted to their company for ever. Page Four April 26, 2015 We remembered our Archbishop Emeritus Francis Cardinal George during a Memorial Mass in our Church on Wednesday, April 22 at 7:00 pm. May the Good Lord grant him eternal rest. Friends in Christ, As you may already know, our beloved Cardinal George was called home to the Lord on Friday morning. He was a man of great faith and courage, a holy man who faced and overcame many obstacles during his life. His missionary spirit led him to travel the world as an Oblate of Mary Immaculate, then return home to Chicago. Not only was he a great leader here in our Archdiocese, but for the Church far beyond. Despite his wide-ranging responsibilities and commitments, he always considered the care and love of those in the Chicago area, in Christ s name, as his primary mission. Faithful from across the Archdiocese of Chicago, and the world, showered Cardinal George with letters and cards during his long battle with cancer. He often remarked how grateful he was to receive these messages, particularly because they included promises of prayer. The kind greetings and well wishes he received during his numerous visits to parishes across our Archdiocese also touched him. Of course, throughout the years, Cardinal George appreciated the prayers, service and financial gifts from thousands of Chicago Catholics. Your contributions have been so vitally important in fulfilling the mission of our local Church enabling our Church to proclaim Christ, to serve the poor and marginalized, and to educate our children. As we mourn the passing of our beloved Cardinal, let us rejoice in the promises of our Risen Lord. Please join me in praying for the repose of the soul of Cardinal George and in thanking God for his life and dedication to the Archdiocese of Chicago. May Cardinal George rest in peace. Cupicha w związku ze śmiercią Kardynała Franciszka George a, OMI, Emerytowanego Arcybiskupa Chicago 17go kwietnia, 2015r. Człowiek pokoju, niezłomności i odwagi został wezwany do domu Pana. Nasz ukochany Kardynał Franciszek George odszedł dzisiaj o godzinie 10:45 a.m. w Rezydencji. Droga życia Kardynała George a rozpoczęła się i zakończyła w Chicago. Był on człowiekiem wielkiej odwagi, który pokonał liczne przeszkody, aby zostać księdzem. Przyjmując święcenia kapłańskie nie szukał wygodnego stanowiska, przeciwnie wstąpił do misyjnego zgromadzenia Misjonarzy Oblatów Maryi Niepokalanej i służył wiernym w trudnych warunkach w Afryce, Azji i w wielu innych miejscach świata. Dumny ze swego chicagowskiego pochodzenia, zaczął przewodzić swemu zgromadzeniu. Ponownie, wiele podróżował i nie pozwalał, aby ograniczenia fizyczne udaremniły jego zapał niesienia obietnicy miłości Chrystusa tam, gdzie była ona najbardziej potrzebna. Kiedy przyjął święcenia biskupie, służył wiernie najpierw w Yakimie, gdzie nauczył się języka hiszpańskiego, aby być bliżej powierzonych mu wiernych, a następnie pełnił posługę w Portland, gdzie prosił wiernych, aby uczyli go bycia dobrym biskupem. W zamian za to obiecał, że pomoże im stać się dobrymi misjonarzami. Kardynał George był szanowanym i uznawanym przywódcą pośród biskupów Stanów Zjednoczonych. Przykładem tego może być sytuacja, kiedy Kościół zmagał się ze śmiertelnym grzechem nadużyć seksualnych duchownych. Wówczas Kardynał przyjął stanowczą postawę pośród innych biskupów i nalegał, aby została wprowadzona zasada zero tolerancji jako jedyny kierunek zgodny z naszymi przekonaniami. Franciszek George służył Kościołowi powszechnemu jako kardynał, ale również służył radą i wsparciem trzem papieżom i ich współpracownikom w rzymskich kongregacjach. Był to jego wkład w zarządzanie Kościołem na całym świecie. Tu, w Chicago, Kardynał odwiedził każdy zakątek Archidiecezji, rozmawiając z wiernymi, wnosząc dobroć i życzliwość w każde spotkanie. Wypełniając program swego przeładowanego terminarza, zawsze przedkładał Kościół nad swoją wygodę i ludzi nad własne potrzeby. Niedawno widzieliśmy jego odwagę z bliska, gdy stawiał czoła narastającym wyzwaniom, niesionym przez chorobę nowotworową. Podążajmy za jego przykładem i bądźmy nieco bardziej odważni, trochę bardziej niezłomni i o wiele bardziej kochający innych. Jest to najpewniejszy sposób na to, by uczcić jego życie i świętować jego powrót przed oblicze Boga. Trwając w wielkanocnym świętowaniu naszego nowego życia w Zmartwychwstałym Panu, wraz ze mną okażcie współczucie rodzinie Księdza Kardynała George a, a szczególnie jego siostrze Małgorzacie. Zapewniajmy ich o naszych modlitwach i dziękujmy Bogu za jego życie i za lata jego poświęcenia dla Archidiecezji Chicago. Módlmy się, aby Bóg przyjął tego dobrego i wiernego sługę do pełni Swego królestwa. Niech Kardynał George spoczywa w pokoju.
Page Five Fourth Sunday of Easter DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY On Sunday, April 12 at 3:00 pm we celebrated Divine Mercy Sunday with a Bilingual Mass. From St. Maria Faustina s Diary, it is clear that this Octave Day of Easter is a day chosen by Christ as a day of extraordinary graces a complete outpouring of His mercy upon all who approach Him with great trust and expectant faith. To properly celebrate this great day, we need to prepare well. Pope John Paul II canonized Sr. Faustina on Divine Mercy Sunday in 2000. He also established Divine Mercy Sunday as a feast day for the entire Church. The St. Priscilla Polish Group organized and celebrated a traditional Easter breakfast which is called Swięconka with our Pastor Fr. Idzi and Fr. Marcin. The Easter breakfast took place in the Rectory Round Room on April 12, 2015 after the 10:30 am Mass. The members of the Polish Group brought home made traditional Polish dishes, including: Kabanos (sausage), bread, vegetable salad, and many types of cakes, to share with everyone.
