Page Two November 25, 2012 SPIRITUAL REFLECTION TRUTH TO POWER On this solemnity of Christ the King we are reminded how Jesus spoke truth to power the power of the mighty Roman Empire in the person of Pontius Pilate, the prefect (governor) of the Roman province of Judea and the local representative of the Emperor Tiberius. Pilate s role in this backwater province was to keep order, prevent uprisings, and ensure that taxes were paid to Rome. Today s Gospel reading shows that Pilate couldn t quite decide what to make of Jesus. He obviously wasn t a mob leader, a zealot, or a con man. Jewish leaders had told Pilate of Jesus claim to be King of the Jews, which could be interpreted as a potential threat to Roman rule. Jesus said if he were claiming kingly rule in Judea his followers would be rising up in revolt. Jesus said to Pilate, My kingdom does not belong to this world. More importantly, he added, I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice (John 18:36, 37). Pilate was reluctant to condemn Jesus because he could find no fault in him, but his reluctance was finally overridden by fear of a riot or even rebellion by the Jews against Roman rule. Jesus suffered under Pontius Pilate, as we say in the Creed, because only Pilate could order crucifixion. The Gospels clearly show the political maneuvering between Roman rulers and Jewish religious leaders, neither of whom wanted any threat to their particular powers. Jesus was outside their usual frame of reference. He was a puzzle and a contradiction to them. He ruled by neither violence nor oppression; he simply witnessed to God s truth. Anyone seeking this truth has only to listen and to respond to become part of the kingdom of God. KRÓL ŻYCIA Gdy myślimy o dawnych królach, kojarzymy ich z koroną na głowie i berłem w ręku, ze wspaniałym strojem i przepychem pałaców. Majestat tej władzy, podkreślany z reguły namaszczeniem kościelnym, wiąże się w naszej myśli często z napuszałością stylu życia, a co gorsze: z bezlitosną walką o władzę, z podstępem w jej sprawowaniu, z intrygami i niemoralnością dworu królewskiego. Dziś niewiele już z tego pozostało. Są jeszcze wprawdzie królowie i królowe, ale nie posiadają już tych dawnych atrybutów władzy. Dziś zmienia się już znaczenie tego słowa: król. Król raczej panuje ale nie rządzi. To raczej wysoki w państwie autorytet moralny niż władza w ścisłym tego słowa znaczeniu. Piłat powiedział: A więc jesteś królem? Jezus odpowiedział: Tak, jestem królem. Ja się na to narodziłem i na to przyszedłem na świat, aby dać świadectwo prawdzie. (J.18,37) Jestem Królem - jest to uroczyste potwierdzenie wielkiej prawdy. ON jest KRÓLEM, i nie ma sobie podobnego ani równego. Byli krolowie, których ludzie nazywali wielkimi, ale czymże on byli wobec Chrystusa? Gdzie jest dzisiaj ta ich wielkość? Być może pozostała po nich tylko garść prochu. Dzisiaj nikt już ich nie kocha ani się nie boi a wielu spośród ludzi nic o nich nie słyszało. Chrystus zaś jest Królem, którzy żyje wiecznie. Codziennie miliony ludzi padają przed NIM na kolana, miliony ze czcią wypowiadają Jego imię. Od chwili, gdy umarł na krzyżu, żyły na ziemi niezliczone miliony ludzi. Oni przeminęli - a ON jest zawsze i wszędzie. Nikt nie zdołał Go zwyciężyć i nikt potrafi o Nim zapiomnieć. On jest Królem nieba i ziemi. Jesteśmy wszyscy obywatelami tego Chrystusowego Królestwa. Staliśmy się nimi z chwilą, gdy na nasze głowy spłynęła woda chrzcielna a na dusze nasze zstąpił Duch Święty. Jakże powinniśmy być wdzięczni Chrystusowi, że takie nam założył królestwo i do uczestnictwa w takim królestwie nas zaprasza. Chrystus zwraca się także dzisiaj do każdego z nas: Każdy, kto jest z prawdy słucha mojego głosu. (J.18,37) Jezus założył Królestwo Prawdy. Trwają w nim tylko ci, którzy są przyjaciółmi Prawdy. Przez chrzest człowiek staje się obywatelem Chrystusowego Królestwa. Ale jak to dobrze wiemy, nie jest łatwo być przyjacielem prawdy, szczególnie wtedy, gdy prawda domaga się ofiary. Retirement Fund for Religious (RFR) Share in the Care * 2012 Why We Ask You to Help Skyrocketing Costs * There are more than 34,000 religious living past age 70 in the United States. In 2011, the average annual cost for their care was more than $35,000 per person. * In 2011 alone, the total cost to support senior women and men religious exceeded $1.1 billion. Insufficient Income * By 2019, retired religious are projected to outnumber wage-earning religious by nearly four to one. * For most of their lives, elder religious worked for small stipends. There were no 401(k) plans or pensions. * Religious communities are financially autonomous and solely responsible for the support and care of all members. Income, earning, and expenses are managed separately from the parish and diocesan structures of the Catholic Church. * The average annual Social Security benefit for a religious is approximately $4,700 - roughly one-third the amount received by the average beneficiary in the United States. How the RFR Makes a Difference Generous Donations and Careful Stewardship * Over the last 25 years, Catholics in the United States have donated $643 million to the RFR. * Approximately 95 percent of donations to the RFR aid elder religious, with five percent or less being used for administration. Financial and Consultative Support * Since 1989, nearly $540 million has been distributed to support the day-to-day care of elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. * An additional $67 million has been allocated toward self-help projects initiated by religious communities, including collaborative health-care facilities and comprehensive retirement planning. * In 2009, the NRRO implemented a new process to help religious communities that are critically underfunded for retirement address their funding shortfalls.
