5 TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The readings today offer us ways to understand both the presence and absence of Jesus in our lives. Zechariah begins by describing not the presence of God, but its absence, an absence as powerful as the loss of an only son or a firstborn child. Such is the anguish we feel when Christ is absent from our lives. Paul understands the presence of Christ by its power to extinguish differences that we think are important but that are insignificant when we are in the presence of Christ. Luke describes the difficulty that even the apostles have naming what it means to be in the presence of Christ. Jesus has to explain that his presence as Christ in our lives means suffering, death, and resurrection. THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT Zechariah, in a passage that we Christians interpret as referring to Jesus, vividly describes a terrible loss for which we are responsible: the death of "him whom they have pierced." Our grief is both personal and overwhelming. The depth of that loss is a reminder of how powerful the presence of Jesus is, so powerful that it erases all the distinctions that we think are important. In Luke, Jesus asks the apostles, "Who do the crowds say that I am?" The apostles are at a loss. Only Peter seems to understand who this man Jesus is. Peter names him Christ, the Messiah. That name will come to mean the one who suffers and dies at human hands. To be the Christ, to be in the presence of the Savior, has implications not just for Jesus but for Peter, the apostles, and us as well. I AM WHO AM What does it mean for us to be in the presence of God and, like Peter, to name and know that presence? To be in the presence of God means that all is laid bare, all our guilt, our sin, our hope, and our salvation. In the presence of God, nothing else matters. Living in the presence of Christ, we understand as Paul does that all distinctions we thought important are erased. There is no slave or free, no male, no female, no immigrant, no citizen. All are one in Christ Jesus. Even a distinction as deeply felt as the difference between life and death is erased by Jesus' death and resurrection. If we believe that all humanity, including us, is made in the image and likeness of God, then it is not possible to continue to divide the world between rich and poor, black and white, male and female, citizen and stranger. All are part of the suffering, death, and resurrection that is Christ. Today's Readings: Zec 12:10-11; 13:1; Ps 63:2-6, 8-9; Gal 3:26-29; Lk 9: NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA Dwa postawione dziś pytania Jezusa powinny być dla nas dobrym sprawdzianem naszej wiary: Za kogo uważają Mnie ludzie? i A wy za kogo Mnie uważacie? Wprawdzie Jezus zadał je apostołom na początku swej publicznej działalności, ale to nie znaczy, by nie powinny być one postawione każdemu chrześcijaninowi, który jest w trakcie swego pielgrzymowania. Poprzez te pytania Jezus chce powiedzieć nam, że winniśmy mieć wiedzę, w jakim świecie się obracamy, jakimi wartościami on żyje, i czy jest w nim miejsce dla Boga. Na tym tle teraz trzeba ocenić wartość naszej wiary, naszego przywiązania do Jezusa, naszego religijnego myślenia. Tym bardziej jest to znaczące, że odpowiedź, jaką sugeruje sam Jezus różni się diamentralnie od tej, jaką daje świat, a nawet sami uczniowie Jezusa nie całkiem świadomi tego, co wyznali. W pierwszym przypadku, jeśli w ogóle bierze się Go pod uwagę, kategoryzuje się Jezusa stawiając Go w szeregu wielkich rewolucjonistów, autorytetów ludzkich, proroków swojego czasu, na miarę Eliasza czy Jana Chrzciciela; oczywiście nie ma tam mowy, by był On Bogiem. W drugim przypadku uczniowie wyznają prawdę o mesjańskiem posłannictwie Jezusa, nie wiedząc do końca, że ten mesjasz, zgodnie z zapowiedzią Jezusa, będzie odrzucony przez straszych, arcykapłanów i uczonych w Piśmie; będzie zabity, a trzeciego dnia zmartwychwstanie, i że oni mają Go w Jego niesieniu krzyża naśladować, chcąć być nazwani prawdziwymi uczniami. Pewnie nie takiej odpowiedzi na swoje wyznanie się spodziewali uczniowie. Widać na tym tle: niewierzącego świata i ich niezrozumienia mesjańskiego posłannictwa Jezusa, że nasza wiara jest zawsze wyzwaniem, łaską, o którą trzeba pokornie zabiegać i wyznawać we współczesnym świecie.
