(773) 491-6929 Treasures From Our Tradition Today, the languages of the whole world arise to God in a Pentecost of praise. In some American dioceses, the Mass is offered every Sunday in more than thirty different languages, including the silent praise of American Sign Language. Fifty years ago, the landscape of liturgy was very different. It was grounded irmly in Latin, which is to the present day still the of icial language of the Roman Rite. Very few people were luent in Latin, even though in those days Latin was far more widely studied in school. Nevertheless, almost every Catholic was competent in the responses and chants of Latin since it is not dif icult to pronounce. The clergy were normally minimally competent in Latin, since much of seminary education was conducted in that language. When the Second Vatican Council was convened, all of the debate and daily work of the council was to be in Latin. In the irst session in 1962, Boston s Cardinal Richard Cushing continually complained about it, and threatened not to return in 1963 if something wasn t done. He convinced the fathers when he rose to speak in fairly luent Latin in an unforgettable Boston twang. The next year, he returned, but with a simultaneous translation system funded by the people of Boston. In May of 2016, I ordained ive men to the priesthood. This May I ordained another ive men. Thirteen priests retired at the end of June 2016. By the end of this coming June, an additional twenty priests will retire. These retirements will bring our total of retired priests to 230. This will mean that close to 30% of our clergy will have reached retirement status. 35 of our retired priests are either in nursing homes or are receiving home care. I am very grateful to our retired priests who are able to continue to share their priestly ministry in our parishes. I realize that many parishes depend upon their service for daily and Sunday Masses, baptisms, weddings, funerals and countless other good works of the Church. Without the help of our retired priests many parishes would have to reduce Mass schedules and other sacramental services. Our retired priests rely upon your help now. The Priests Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. As you know well, the cost for health care, prescription drugs and nursing home care continues to increase. This special collection in June is different from Retirement Fund for Religious collection in December. That collection supports retired men and women in religious orders. Retired archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from that collection, which is why I am asking you to support them with this Fund for Retired Priests. This letter give me the opportunity to share my heartfelt appreciation for the ministry and devotion of our retired priests. I also want to remember all the faithful priests who have gone to their eternal reward, and I commend them to your prayers as well. Please know of my gratitude to you for your most gracious generosity in this collection last year and I ask that you repeat your kindness this year. Your donations, your prayers, and your good wishes are an af irmation of our retired priests and the good they have accomplished in service to the people of the archdiocese. Drodzy Przyjaciele w Chrystusie, Podczas weekendu, w dniach 10 i 11 czerwca 2017 roku będzie miała miejsce specjalna kolekta na rzecz Księży Emerytów Archidiecezji Chicago. W maju 2016 roku udzieliłem święceń kapłańskich pięciu mężczyznom. W maju bieżącego roku wyświęciłem kolejnych pięciu. Pod koniec czerwca 2016 roku trzynastu księży odeszło na emeryturę. Pod koniec czerwca tego roku, kolejnych dwudziestu księży przejdzie na emeryturę. Łącznie, od tego momentu będziemy mieli 230 księży emerytów. Oznacza to, że blisko 30 % naszych duchownych osiągnie status emeryta. 35 naszych księży emerytów albo przebywa w domach opieki, albo otrzymuje domową opiekę zdrowotną. Jestem ogromnie wdzięczny naszym księżom emerytom, którzy są w stanie kontynuować swoją służbę kapłańską w naszych para iach. Jestem świadomy, że wiele para ii liczy na ich posługę w odprawianiu codziennych i niedzielnych Mszy św., w udzielaniu sakramentu bierzmowania, małżeństwa, w przewodniczeniu pogrzebom i ich uczestniczeniu w innych, niezliczonych dobrych inicjatywach Kościoła. Bez pomocy naszych księży emerytów wiele para ii musiałoby zredukować liczbę Mszy św. odprawianych regularnie i ograniczyć inne posługi sakramentalne. Nasi księża emeryci liczą na Waszą pomoc. Fundusz Emerytalny i Towarzystwo Ubezpieczeń Wzajemnych Księży (The Priests Retirement and Mutual Aid Association - PRMAA) dba o zabezpieczanie ich potrzeb. Jak sami dobrze wiecie, wciąż wzrastają koszty opieki zdrowotnej, leków na receptę i utrzymania domów opieki zdrowotnej. Specjalna kolekta czerwcowa jest czymś innym niż kolekta grudniowa na rzecz osób konsekrowanych. Emerytowani księża diecezjalni nie korzystają z funduszy zebranych podczas tamtej zbiórki. Dlatego właśnie proszę Was o wsparcie księży emerytów w ramach niniejszej kolekty na rzecz Funduszu Księży Emerytów Archidiecezji Chicago. Pisząc ten list, pragnę skorzystać z okazji, aby przekazać Wam moją płynącą z serca wdzięczność za Waszą posługę i oddanie okazywane naszym księżom emerytom. Chcę również pamiętać o wszystkich wiernych księżach, którzy odeszli już po swą wieczną nagrodę i także ich powierzyć Waszym modlitwom.
