(773) Fax (773) Treasures From Our Tradition One of our great treasures is the way the Church has frequently flourished under unfavorable conditions, like the grape ivy on the mantel that refuses to die no matter how infrequently you water it or open the drapes. Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majority population of basic human rights. The Protestant parliament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from popery to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non-anglicans, and Quakers. There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a one-hundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who became Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a deceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a chapel. Catholic Emancipation was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. No wonder that poor Irish immigrants to the United States frequently built gloriously beautiful churches as their first act on free soil! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Poświęciwszy się stanowi duchownemu, założył zgromadzenie kleryków regularnych Matki Bożej, które przez gorliwą pracę duszpasterską odnowiło życie duchowe Lukki. Następnie zajął się kształceniem kandydatów na misjonarzy. Jego dzieło dało początek Instytucji Rozkrzewiania Wiary. Umarł w Rzymie 9 października 1609 roku. Boże, źródło wszelkiego dobra, Ty powołałeś świętego Jana do głoszenia ludziom Ewangelii, spraw, za jego wstawiennictwem, aby prawdziwa wiara zawsze i wszędzie się rozszerzała. Saint John XXIII, Pope Your simplicity and meekness carried the scent of God and sparked in people's hearts the desire for goodness. You spoke often of the beauty of the family gathered around the table to share bread and faith: pray for us that once again true families would live in our homes. With outstretched hands you sowed hope, and you taught us to listen for God's footsteps as he prepares a new humanity: help us have a healthy optimism of defeating evil with good. Oh St. John Paul, from heaven's window, where we see you next to Mary, send God's blessing down upon us all. Amen. St. John Leonardi was born in Tuscany and, after studying to become a pharmacist, left this profession and became a priest. He devoted himself to teaching catechism to children; in addition, he gathered laymen to work with him in hospitals and prisons, and in 1574 he founded the Order of Clerics Regular of the Mother of God. He later founded in Rome a society of priests dedicated to serving in foreign missions; this eventually became the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Father, giver of all good things, you proclaimed the good news to countless people through the ministry of St. John Leonardi. By the help of his prayers may the true faith continue to grow. Św. During the month of October, Rosary Devotions are on every Saturday of the month after 5:00 PM Mass in the English language, and every Sunday of the month after 10:30 AM Mass in the Polish language. Everyone is invited to join us in prayers. The annual October attendance head count for the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Churches begins this Sunday and runs for the entire month. We hope that all our parishioners will be counted here at Saint Camillus.
