(773) Jubilee Year of Mercy On today s Jubilee for Those Sick and Suffering Disabilities, Jesus encounters a woman who is spiritually ill. She is thus disabled from participating in Israel s worshiping community or polite society. Bathing Jesus feet with tears, drying them with unveiled hair, anointing them (Luke 7:38) risk Jesus becoming unclean. Yet his mercy welcomes even such inappropriate behavior as her sincere manifestation of love: Your sins are forgiven. Go in peace (7:48, 50). Go not just in peace, but in shalom, the allenveloping, life-changing assurance of God s mercy. She is anonymous, known in the city only as a sinful woman (7:37). The character with name and religious title, Simon the Pharisee (7:36, 40), judges her harshly, but himself not at all, and thus forfeits God s mercy. This Jubilee Year of Mercy challenges us to self-examination. In which role do we most often cast ourselves, humble sinner or judgmental Pharisee? Jesus declares that only by an unfailing willingness to show mercy to fellow sinners can we hope to obtain mercy ourselves (see Misericordiae Vultus, 9). Peter Scagnelli, Copyright J. S. It will continue Monday thru Saturday at the 8:30 AM Holy Mass. The last day of the Fathers' Novena will be Monday, June 27th. Please take one envelope from our ushers, print clearly in capital letters the name of the person for whom you wish us to pray, and place that envelope in the collection basket or drop it off at the rectory or sacristy. The Fathers' Novena of Holy Masses will be offered for all intentions received. Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Thanksgiving Mass On Sunday, June 19, at 12:30 PM, a Mass of Thanksgiving will be offered by Bishop Andrew Wypych for the intention of the benefactors and sponsors of our renovated parish parking lot. At the same time, the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus located in our church parking lot will be solemnly blessed. This statue is the ful illment of the wishes of our deceased, long-time parishioner, Irene Brzenczak, who left in her will approximately $600,000 for our parish. By means of this offering and the generosity of all our parishioners over the past few years, our parish was able to cover the costs associated with the renovation of the parking area; and thanks to which, we have no outstanding inancial debts at the present time. We ask all our parishioners and benefactors to take part in this Mass of Thanksgiving for God s help in the renovation of our parking lot. Msza Święta Dziękczynna W niedzielę 19 czerwca o godz. 12:30 PM zostanie odprawiona dwujęzyczna Msza św. przez ks. Biskupa Andrzeja Wypycha w intencji o iarodawców i sponsorów odnowienia naszego para ialnego parkingu. W tym samym dniu zostanie poświęcona igura Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa, która jest usytuowana przy naszym kościele. Figura ta jest wypełnieniem woli zmarłej Ireny Brzenczak, naszej długoletniej para ianki, która w testamencie pozostawiła dla naszej para ii kwotę około $600,000. Poprzez tę o iarę i hojność wszystkich para ian przez ostatnie lata, nasza para ia mogła pokryć koszty związane z odnowieniem parkingu i dzięki temu aktualnie nie mamy żadnych długów inansowych. Prosimy wszystkich para ian i dobrodziejów o zaplanowanie udziału w tej dziękczynnej Mszy św. za Bożą pomoc w odnowieniu naszego parkingu. HOPE AND FORGIVENESS There were some interesting conceptions of sin prevalent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was the belief that God punished sin immediately. Those who suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners getting their due from the Almighty. Today s irst reading hints at another kind of God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, The L on his part has forgiven your sin (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinfulness! Jesus is the good news of God s mercy and forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the good news would have been too good to believe, too dif icult to imagine. But there he is in today s Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is forgiven because of her great love.
