The Jesuit fathers opened Saint Mary School in Philadelphia in 1782 in the first light of independence. Catholic and Protestant squabbles about the nature of education forced the Fathers to make this risky and innovative venture in the heart of the city. The school was closed by a devastating fire in 1902, but reopened in 1968 as St. Mary Interparochial School, the first example of a shared parochial school. It is also the only Catholic school within the confines of a national park. This is the Mother School of this uniquely American institution. Many parochial schools, especially in national parishes, were established to preserve the culture and language of the old country, and also to protect young people from prejudice. In other countries, Ireland for one, the Church is authorized to run national schools, sometimes under the sponsorship of a parish. In still other places, such as Quebec, publiclyfunded separate schools were administered by the Church. Wherever the state funds Catholic schools, normally enrollment is guaranteed to all applicants. The Quebec system was dismantled in 1998 when the state decided to reorganize schools along linguistic lines rather than religious affiliation. The men we acknowledge today are the future leaders of our Church. Your past support of this collection has made a significant impact on each seminarian and I ask you to join me again this year in contributing to the Seminarian Education Second Collection. The critical education and training needed to successfully shepherd parishes, administer the sacraments, and strengthen our Church is made possible by both your prayers and financial support. There are currently 64 seminarians preparing for a life of service as archdiocesan priests, and their enthusiasm to evangelize our faith is inspiring. Your contributions to this collection alleviate monthly expenses such as tuition and fees, room and board, and health insurance for each seminarian and will be used solely for the formation of new priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. 5 Our "FAMILY FEST 2018" will be held on Sunday, October 7th. The day will begin with a 12:30 pm bilingual Mass followed by an afternoon of fun and enjoyment for the entire family. For the adults enjoyment, Siekawica Band will be performing starting at 2:00 pm. Food and refreshments will be available. Donation is $5.00 per person, with children under 12 admitted free. In connection with "FAMILY FEST", the Parish Super Raffle is being held, with the winners being selected at the "FAMILY FEST". GRAND PRIZE $1000; 1st Prize - $700; 2nd Prize - $500; 3rd thru 5th Prize - $100. Raffle tickets are available at $10.00 per ticket. Those who buy 5 tickets will receive 3 free tickets; those who buy 10 will receive 6 free tickets, and so on.
