PIELGRZYMKA KOŁA RÓŻAŃCOWEGO Nasze parafialne Koło Różańcowe obchodzi w tym roku 5-lecie swego istnienia. Wdzięczni Bogu za dar pobożności maryjnej w naszych sercach skupionej wokół regularnej modlitwy różańcowej wybraliśmy się w niedzielę 2 października z pielgrzymką do St. John (IN), gdzie odprawiliśmy Drogę Krzyżową oraz do Merrillville (IN), gdzie Matce Bożej Częstochowskiej podziękowaliśmy za istnienie i rozwój naszego Koła Różańcowego oraz złożylismy nasze modlitwy na Eucharystii. Ważnym miejscem naszej modlitwy był też autokar, w którym odśpiewaliśmy Godzinki i wspólnie odmówiliśmy różaniec oraz chwaliliśmy Boga naszym śpiewem. Garść uwag do czytań na XXVIII niedzielę zwykłą AM 6,1.4-7; 1 TYM 6,11-16; ŁK 16,19-31 2 Krl 5,14-17; 2 Tym 2,8-13; Łk 17,11-19 Pokorna wdzięczność świadczy o wielkości człowieka. Niestety nie wszystkich na nią stać; i o tym mówi dzisiejsza ewangelia, uwypuklając chrakter religijny. Wódz syryjski Naaman, więc poganin w stosunku do narodu żydowskiego, został uzdrowiony z okropnej choroby trądu, i był tak wdzięczny prorokowi Elizeuszowi, za którego pośrednictwem doznał łaski uzdrowienia Bożego, że chciał zapłacić mu wozem złota. O dziwo, Bożych skarbów nie da się kupić, chce mu przez odmowę powiedzieć Elizeusz, zachęcając go raczej do nawrócenia. I tak się też stało: wdzięczność skłoniła Namaana do wyznania jedynego Boga Jahwe. Podobnie jest z dziesięcioma trędowatymi uzdrowionymi przez Jezusa, o których wspomina dzisiejsza ewangelia. Kiedy byli w opresji wiedzieli do kogo zwracać się o pomoc, a po otrzymaniu daru uzdrowienia, tylko jeden, i to znów obcokrajowiec, samarytatin zdobył się na podziękowanie. Tylko ten jeden wyciągnął lekcję z otrzymanej łaski Bożej. Jezus pochwala wtedy jego wiarę, która pozwoliła mu poszukiwać ratunku Bożego i odnaleźć go w Jego Boskim pośrednictwie. Wdzęczność jest tu wyrazem prawdziwości wiary, którą kierowali się poszukujący Boga. Bo za otrzymaną łaską uzdrowienia kryję się Boża interwencja ukazana w Jezusie Chrystusie. Jezus Chrystus nas zbawił za cenę swojej krwi, wymagając od nas nie wielkich skarbów, których nie zawsze się ma, ale nawrócenia serca, które zawsze jest w naszych możliwościach. Jeśli będziemy się Go zapierali, to i On nas się zaprze (przez fakt bycia odtrąconym przez nas). Jeśli my odmawiamy wierności, On wiary dochowuje, bo nie może się zaprzeć samego siebie. Taki jest Bóg, który mimo braku wdzięczności ze strony swego stworzenia, okazuje wciąż swoją łaskę. Wyciągajmy z tej dzisiejszej ewangelii lekcję dla naszego codziennego życia. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This month, parishes around the country will conduct the "October count," a measure of attendance at Mass. The measure has been taken for many centuries, and in some European dioceses it is possible to measure the level of engagement in worship by the population over the course of many centuries. Long ago, it was also the custom to track "Easter duty" by a statistical report. Penitents would receive a kind of chit at confession, which they would then turn in at their parish church when they received Holy Communion during Easter time. Long ago, of course, Communion was fairly rare in the life of a Catholic Christian, perhaps only once a year. The chits would be tallied by parish priests and reported to the chancery, which in turn would hold on to the records and include the statistics in a report to the Vatican every five years. Nowadays, the October count has proved especially critical in the life of our Church as bishops use the figures to measure the vitality of church life, to sketch parish boundaries, and even to decide when to close, merge, or form new parishes. JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Jubilee of Marian Devotion This weekend, the Jubilee honors Mary under the title Pope Francis suggests, "Mother of Mercy." Recall the Good Samaritan Gospel. Priest and Levite saw suffering but showed no mercy. Recall the rich man, who never saw Lazarus right before his eyes, and showed no mercy. Today, Jesus sees ten lepers from afar and shows extraordinary mercy. Mary's entire life, declares Francis, was modeled on Jesus, "Mercy-Made-Flesh." Indeed, standing at the cross, Mary saw Jesus' mercy take flesh when Jesus showed mercy to the executioners. So Pope Francis recommends we frequently pray the Salve Regina, Hail, Holy Queen, asking her to ever look upon us with mercy, so that we might be worthy to gaze upon the face of her merciful Son Jesus. May we do so not only in eternity, but here and now, opening our eyes to see Jesus in others, and our hearts to serve Jesus in others by loving deeds of unconditional mercy. TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 28th in ordinary Time The readings today speak of healing and salvation. In Second Kings, Naaman, a commander of the army of the king of Syria, develops leprosy. He goes to a stranger, a prophet from Israel, when no one else can cure his disease. Much to his surprise, after a simple bath in the river, he is cured. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus cures ten lepers and sends them to the priest. Only one, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus for his cure and only he hears the words, "Your faith has saved you." The psalm and Timothy remind us that salvation involves justice, kindness, and faithfulness and forever links us with Jesus. In a world as broken as ours, both healing and salvation are necessary. HEALING Leprosy is a disease that does not kill but lingers for years, deforming the body and isolating the sufferer. It has been used in the scriptures to suggest the destructive power of sin and its resulting isolation from the community. Jesus acts in marked contrast to this view when he touches and heals those shunned by their community. The focus of the readings today is not on the disease itself, not on sin, but on the response of two who were healed. Both lepers are outside the community of faith. Naaman is a Syrian and the leper in Luke is a Samaritan. Both are healed and experience the wholeness that healing provides. The relief and gratitude that such healing affords are more than enough, as it was for nine of the ten lepers cured in Luke. But for Naaman and the tenth leper, their healing not only makes them whole, it makes them want more. Naaman wants to take this God home with him and the tenth leper wants to thank the one who gave him life. It makes them want a continued connection to this God who brought them back to life. SALVATION Each of us has known the painful breakdown and isolation that comes with sin, personal and social, individual and community. We have known the pain that lingers for years. And we have known moments of healing, of wholeness restored, the compassionate touch of someone who reminds us that we belong not just to the community but to God. We are not only healed of our brokenness, we are also saved from lives of isolation and misery. We receive that salvation when, like Naaman and the tenth leper, we recognize the source of the grace and mercy, and return to it and take it home with us. So not only are we healed, we become a source of healing and salvation for others in a world where the suffering does not seem to end.
