Page Six June 15, 2008 Catholic Funerals Part 3 PARISH STAFF ASSISTANCE Many years ago, before a family went to a funeral home to make arrangements, the family visited the parish office. Today, the first stop for families is the funeral home and our parish s input is little more than a phone call made to determine the day and time of a funeral Mass. In January 2005, guidelines for funerals at St. Priscilla were sent to all funeral homes which serve our parishioners on a regular basis. These guidelines are meant to help you in planning in the absence of our parish staff. Some funerals homes are very cooperative while others are less so. We strongly urge you to renew that practice of visiting our parish office before or after meeting at the funeral home to take advantage of the assistance we can offer in time of loss. Simply call before you stop by or ask the funeral director to let us know to expect you after making arrangements. When you arrive, it is a perfect opportunity to meet with one of our priests to choose Readings and tell him a little more about the deceased which he might be able to incorporate into the funeral Mass homily. One of our local funeral directors who consulted on this article reminded that the personalization of funerals is increasingly popular and such a visit with one of our priests can facilitate such personalization. It is also a good time to meet with our music director to help guide music selections. Making these choices and communicating this information at the wake can be rushed while greeting other mourners. During the meeting, questions you might have can be answered. Perhaps family members have not been at Mass for many years. This meeting is an opportunity for Reconciliation (Confession) that they would be spiritually prepared to receive Holy Communion at the funeral Mass. In short, it is an opportunity to strengthen bonds with our parish and the Church and for our parish staff to extend their hearts and resources. We care and we are here for you and your loved ones. Guest priests and deacons are always welcomed at St. Priscilla. We do, however, need to be informed as soon as possible. Even with a guest priest, one of our parish priests will always concelebrate the funeral Mass out of respect and to represent our parish community. Copies of Your Catholic Rights are available in the lobby of the rectory. We sincerely hope that the brochure and the information in these articles over the past few weeks will assist you in making truly Catholic decisions for yourself and your loved ones when such occasions present themselves. It might also be helpful in informing friends or family on exactly what the Church teaches regarding funerals, cremation and the assistance which our parish is able to offer. If you have any other questions not addressed in the articles, simply ask. We want you to be as informed as possible during difficult times.
