Page Two March 2, 2014 LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. The season of Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter. The liturgy prepares the catechumens for the celebration of the paschal mystery by the several stages of Christian initiation; it also prepares the faithful, who recall their baptism and do penance in preparation for Easter, (General Norms for Liturgical Year, #27). By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer, the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. On weekdays of Lent, we strongly recommend participation in daily Mass and self-imposed observances of fasting. In light of grave humans needs which weigh on the Christian conscience in all seasons, we urge particularly during Lent, generosity to local, national, and world programs of sharing all things needed to translate our duty to penance into a means of implementing the right of the poor to their part of our abundance, (U.S. Bishops statement on penitential observances, 1966). THOUGHTS ON GIVING No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (material wealth). MATTHEW 6:24 Do you have other gods in your life (job, money, power, ego, possessions)? Do you put them before the Lord? A stewardship lifestyle means putting God first, in all things! It means living stewardship 7 days a week, 24 hours a day and not just the time that I go to Church or participate in my parish ministry. It means re prioritizing and putting God first. WIELKOPOSTNE PRZEPISY Przepisy Wielkopostne Obowiązujące w Tym Roku 1. W czasie zwykłych dni tygodnia w okresie Wielkiego Postu stanowczo zachęcamy do uczestnictwa w codziennej Mszy świętej i do wstrzemiężliwości od pokarmów mięsnych. Page Four March 2, 2014 Reflecting on God s Word I am writing this in the aftermath of the earthquake that shattered Haiti in January of 2010. The devastation was beyond words. Newspapers and telecasts were filled with pictures of the dead and heart-breaking stories. More than 220,000 were killed and thousands upon thousands were wounded. There is little food, water, or shelter, and few medical supplies. Yet even in the face of this tragic event, an evening news program two nights after the earthquake had footage of a large group in Port au Prince lifting their voices and hands in prayer, praising God. This radical faith in God is what Jesus calls his disciples to have. The Father did not intervene to save his Son from death, but neither did he allow death to have the final word. He raised his Son from the dead. This saving death has remained the sign above all signs that God wills us to have eternal life. It can seem impossible at times not to worry about tomorrow. But Jesus assures us that the Father does not abandon us ever! We are all called to be stewards of the mysteries of the faith that is centered in the person and saving death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We are to hand on what has been handed down to us: that Jesus is God s only Son, who suffered and died and was raised for our salvation, and by our baptism we are brought into this mystery of living, dying, and rising in Christ. James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. We received a letter from Trinity High School, informing us of students from our Parish who have achieved Honor Roll for the second block, earning a GPA of 3.3 or higher in the 2013-14 school year. We are all very proud of these young women for working hard every day to receive such recognition and we encourage further successes. First honors (3.75 GPA or above) Living God s Word Today s psalm response is a wonderful prayer of the heart to carry through the week: Rest in God alone, my soul (Psalm 62:6a). We can pray with the psalmist that we find our peace in God who is our rock and our salvation, our stronghold.
