We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three nativity feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today s birth of the Baptist. Today s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child s advent, but of Elizabeth s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting St. John s fires in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist Page Three Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory (Isaiah 49:3). Jana Chrzciciela, największego z proroków, który udzielił chrztu Jezusowi Chrystusowi i osobiście wskazał Go jako zapowiadanego Zbawiciela świata. Dzieje św. Jana znamy bezpośrednio z Ewangelii. Zapowiedziany przez Archanioła Gabriela począł się, gdy jego rodzice Elżbieta i Zachariasz byli już staruszkami. Jan był o pół roku starszy od Jezusa, a obaj spotkali się po raz pierwszy będąc jeszcze w łonach matek. Przez wiele lat św. Jan przebywał na pustyni, był prorokiem wzywającym do nawrócenia. Udzielał chrztu w Jordanie. Celem tego chrztu było przygotowanie do nawrócenia oraz zapowiedź chrztu nowotestamentalnego. Chrzest z rąk Jana przyjął Jezus. Teologowie tłumaczą, że w ten sposób Mesjasz uświęcił wody Jordanu. Dzięki temu woda służy do chrztu świętego, który jest pierwszym i najważniejszym sakramentem dla chrześcijan. Jan Chrzciciel stał się obrońcą małżeństwa, ponieważ skarcił władcę, Heroda, za cudzołóstwo. Potępiał publicznie jego związek z Herodiadą, żoną brata. Za tę śmiałą obronę trwałości małżeństwa i czystości obyczajów poniósł śmierć męczeńską. Jan Chrzciciel jest jednym z najbardziej czczonych świętych. Wyjątkowo Kościół obchodzi uroczystość ku jego czci przede wszystkim w dzień narodzin, a nie - jak zwykle w przypadku świętych - w dzień śmierci, choć także w liturgii czczony jest dzień męczeńskiej śmierci Jana. Co najmniej od IV w. powstawały świątynie ku czci świętego, z których najbardziej znana jest bazylika św. Jana na Lateranie, katedra biskupa Rzymu. This weekend, June 23 & 24, our parish will have representatives from the Catholic Christians Community from Jerusalem and Bethlehem in the Holy Land, who will display olive wood, hand-crafted Religious Figurines and Articles. The Catholic Christian Community in the Holy Land depends mainly on olive wood carving and tourism. Due to the political conflict and the lack of tourism there, a lot of Christians were forced to leave the Holy Land. So by displaying these religious articles abroad and selling them, this will help the Christians to survive and keep their community alive. Those articles are beautifully hand carved and crafted, and they reflect our faith and love for the Lord.
