Areas of interest include American literature, culture, history, society, American politics, etc. Students will be introduced to the techniques of writing and the rules of citation. A list of topics will be proposed but individual interests will be encouraged. Keeping a steady development of the research and writing throughout the whole year is of utmost importance therefore deadlines for mid-term and the term papers have been set. (See below) Keeping the deadlines is of utmost importance! Late papers will be deducted two points per day. Failure to keep a deadline might result in jeopardizing chances for course completion. Weekly attendance at the seminar and weekly reports on the project's progress are obligatory. Failure to attend seminars and keep deadlines may result in the expulsion from the seminar. Students are expected to have completed their dissertations by June 01, 2012. GRADES AND EVALUATION Long oral project for each class a different student (or students) will be asked to prepare a class presentation on a their project. The approach shall be highly interdisciplinary and special emphasis shall be laid on the dynamics of the process of communication. Relations between basic areas of linguistic analysis: syntax, semantics, phonetics, phonology, pragmatics and sociolinguistics will be under scrutiny. The course should allow the students to get a deeper insight into the nature of linguistic interactions in their multiple range: starting from simple elements of a discourse, through complex cross-cultural speech events to the processes of foreign language acquisition and implications for foreign language teaching. We shall deal mostly with the theoretical aspects of linguistics with some reference to contrastive analysis, which allows to compare the differences in structural and contextual aspects of various languages. The course shall also highlight in more detail the social, cultural and psychological approaches to language, its acquisition and intercultural use.

Main concepts and ideas. Generative phonology. Prototypes in phonology. Phoneme, morpheme, allophone, allomorph. Some contrasts between British and American English. Main categories of language 2: grammar. Presentation of main concepts in morphology and syntax. Structuralism pros and cons. Contrastive analysis some more implications. Main categories of language 3: vocabulary. The analysis of lexical approach to language. Paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations. Metonymy and metaphor in language. Implications for cross-cultural analysis (kinship, taboos, taxonomies etc.) The situational approach to language. On the threshold to sociolinguistics how personal intention, social status and geographical location of interlocutors influence the success of their communication. The notion of felicity conditions. A discussion based on a freely chosen life-example, preferably with contrastive view. Reference to theories of conveying meaning Discourse analysis in the light of sociolinguistics. Illocutionary force of the utterance. The notion of presupposition. The definition of speech community based on chosen real life examples The world of paralinguistics in the light of pragmatics and semantics.
