(773) Fax (773) Treasures From Our Tradition The cause of church unity is commended to Christians for prayer and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture, spin off, and mutate into new expressions, recent history shows some new points of convergence and agreement. Catholics are more firmly rooted in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling resources, and people from various traditions are collaborating on projects. The call of this week is to be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in common. The old advice to lighten up is good medicine, because sometimes our differences are delightful and amusing. If someone says, Let us pray, a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week not for focusing on the well worn paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal. Rev. 3 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Św. Agnieszka, młodziutka rzymianka, ponosiła śmierć męczeńską na przełomie III i IV wieku. Agnieszka była szlachetnie urodzoną dziewczyną, ale nie chciała poślubić żadnego z zalotników, mówiąc, że jej serce jest już zajęte. Rozzłoszczeni adoratorzy oskarżyli ją o bycie chrześcijanką, a prefekt Semproniusz, którego syna propozycję małżeństwa odrzuciła, skazał ją na śmierć. Prawo rzymskie zakazywało zabijania dziewic, dlatego zaprowadzono ją do domu publicznego. Wszechmogący, wieczny Boże, Ty wybierasz to, co słabe w oczach świata, aby zawstydzić to, co mocne, spraw, abyśmy naśladowali stałość w wierze świętej Agnieszki, męczennicy, której narodziny dla nieba obchodzimy. A popular saint about whom little is known, Agnes is said to have been a beautiful, wealthy Roman maiden who had, in childhood, dedicated herself to God. Some say that a rejected suitor betrayed her to authorities; others say that she was asked at 13 to sacrifice to the gods and marry, both of which she refused. Legends tell of her being thrown into a brothel, where her purity was miraculously preserved. Having escaped that fate, she was martyred. In the IV Century, Constantia, the daughter of Constantine, built a basilica on the site of her tomb. St. Ambrose wrote about Agnes in De virginitate, and Damasus I wrote an epitaph for her. Prudentius composed a hymn in her honor. Her emblem in art is the lamb because of the similarity between her name and the Latin word for lamb, agnus. It is customary on her feast day for two lambs to be blessed by the Pope. On Holy Thursday they are shorn, and from the wool is woven the pallium which the pope gives to a newly consecrated metropolitan archbishop as a sign of his jurisdiction and his union with the pope. Almighty, eternal God, you choose what the world considers weak to put the world power to shame. May we who celebrate the birth of Saint Agnes into eternal joy be loyal to the faith she professed.
