"I am going fishing." What an announcement! It is a Bible quote, from today's Gospel. The person who said it also once declared, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Yes, it's Peter! So today's announcement seems quite the comedown. Last Sunday Jesus said, "As the Father has sent me, so I send you." But Peter seems determined to return to his pre-apostolic occupation, until Jesus intervenes, making Peter's later announcement deeper, "Lord, you know that I love you," and Peter's apostolic calling clearer, "Tend my sheep." Peter does so. Acts presents the consequences: Peter declares, "We must obey God rather than men." As Revelation proclaims, "Worthy is the Lamb"--to receive Peter's lifelong service, and ours. Because we've seen brutal tortures inflicted on persecuted Christians worldwide, how impressive are Peter and the other disciples in today's Acts of the Apostles. Ordered to stop teaching, Peter, speaking for all, refuses. Yet such courage was not their initial response. As today's Gospel opens, these same disciples seem to resume their former vocation, fishing. But their choice proves fruitless until Jesus, unrecognized, gets them to admit that their "old job," though safe and secure, has failed. Only when they obey Jesus do they succeed-- fish--and recognize their Helper: "It is the Lord." What happens next teaches us, too. Jesus tells the disciples to bring him the fruit of their work done at his command, "some of the fish you just caught." But breakfast is already waiting, "a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread." Jesus wants our best efforts, but he can always prepare and provide what we need: a comforting thought when our best efforts seem to fail. After providing a catch none of us could accomplish, Jesus offers an intimacy any of us can provide: "Come, have breakfast." Revelation's heavenly liturgy envisions a community "countless in number." So the "one hundred fifty-three fish," Saint Jerome suggests, equals the Mediterranean's full number of species--the Gospel's way of asserting that the Church must have room for everyone. Peter drags that full net to Jesus, keeping it safe and not torn. Pope Francis calls this unity our "reconciled diversity." How appropriate to live Saint Augustine's timeless ideal, especially during this Jubilee Year of Mercy: "In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, diversity; in all things, charity." After their breakfast, Jesus does not ask Peter to profess his faith again, to confess his sin again, or even to apologize again for his denial. Jesus asks Peter to declare his love. So may our work in union with the risen Jesus be fruitful, our community inclusive, our love selfless, our mercy boundless, and our witness faithful--even unto death. III Niedziela Okresu Wielkanocnego Po zmartwychwstaniu kolejny raz spożywał posiłek ze swoimi uczniami. Jedli zapewne w milczeniu, bowiem Apostołowie nie mieli odwagi zadawać pytań Nauczycielowi. Kiedy posiłek miał się ku końcowi, Chrystus odwołał Piotra na bok i zadał mu pytanie, zaskakujące dla starego rybaka. Szymonie, synu Jana, czy miłujesz mnie więcej niż inni?. Zaskoczony Piotr zastanawiał się pewnie, dlaczego właśnie jego pyta Jezus o większą miłość i dlaczego właśnie teraz zadaje takie pytanie. Piotr pamiętał jeszcze swój upadek; zdarzyło się to przecież tak niedawno, kiedy on jeden wyparł się swego Mistrza. Inni stchórzyli, lecz on zdradził. Dlaczego więc Chrystus wybiera ponownie jego? Pytanie mogło oznaczać tylko kolejne, nowe zadanie. I rzeczywiście, Piotr nie omylił się; czekały go nowe zadania - o ileż poważniejsze i większe niż sądził. Bowiem Jezusowe pytanie o większą miłość było jednocześnie pytaniem o większą sprawiedliwość, o większe miłosierdzie, o większą siłę przebaczenia. Odpowiedź Piotra była prawdziwa. Wyznał swą miłość do Nauczyciela, nie mówiąc jednak, że jest większa niż innych. Dlaczego? Może nie był jeszcze pewien, czy należy cały do Chrystusa. Może jeszcze chciał zachować coś dla siebie, może bał się tego, co nieznane. A może po prostu wiedział, że jest słabym i małym człowiekiem, który sam z siebie niewiele może. Chrystus obiecał wówczas Piotrowi, że nie zostanie on sam. Chrystus pragnie być kochany, żyć w sercu Piotra, być obecny w całym jego życiu. Wszystko, co Piotr uczyni, wspierane będzie siłą łaski Bożej. Człowiek żyje dopóty, dopóki ktoś jeszcze go kocha. Umiera wtedy, gdy kochany nie jest, a życie jego zmienia się w wegetację. Bóg też umiera, jeżeli nie jest kochany. Nie umiera w ogóle, umiera w sercu człowieka, w jego myślach, pragnieniach, tęsknotach. Nie jest kochany, nie jest więc potrzebny. Staje się niewidoczny, niezauważalny, nieobecny - po prostu Go nie ma. Wtedy nasze praktyki religijne oznaczają już tylko fizyczną obecność przy ołtarzu. Chrystus pragnął być kochany, bo tylko miłość zapewnia istnienie i tylko miłość jest gwarancją tego istnienia. Pragnął być kochany, ponieważ razem z nami mówił: Abba - Ojcze. Pragnął być kochany, ponieważ za nas umarł. Pragnął być kochany, ponieważ sam nas ukochał. Dlatego zapytał Piotra o większą miłość. Dlatego nas wszystkich pyta o to samo. Pyta z nadzieją, że pozwolimy Mu istnieć w naszym sercu i w naszym życiu. Że będzie nadal mógł być naszym przyjacielem i bratem. W ten sposób Chrystus uczy nas miłości wobec bliźnich. Nie uśmiercajmy ich jej brakiem. Nie wykreślajmy ich istnienia ze swojego życia. Pozwólmy im być. Kochajmy. Loteria Bonów Żywnościowych! Namesakes of Christ On Palm Sunday, we heard in Paul s letter to the Philippians that all things in heaven, on earth, and under the earth must bend their knee at the name of Jesus. That name comes back in today s first reading. The Sanhedrin, whom we heard about just a few short weeks ago in the reading of the Passion, are again confronted by Jesus in his name being proclaimed by the apostles. Peter and the others refuse to bend their knee to the authority of the Sanhedrin and stop teaching in the name of Christ. In fact, they rejoice that they have been persecuted for doing so. Do we genuinely give honor to the name of Jesus by being his namesakes in the world today?
