BABY SHOWER Each year, the Church celebrates "Sanctity of Life Month" during January. This time is set aside to remind us of the sacredness of human life from conception to natural death. Many issues challenge our beliefs - abortion, capital punishment, physician-assisted suicide, stem cell issues - to name a few. On January 22nd, in particular, we are reminded of the anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision to legalize abortion. For many years, our parish has participated in a project to help support young, unwed mothers who turn to the Church for help in bringing their babies to birth. This is a small, but very positive and effective way of directly assisting women who may have considered aborting their unborn child. On the weekends of January 20/21 and 27/28, we will sponsor a "Baby Shower". When you come to Mass, we ask that you bring new items for babies up to one year of age, such as pampers, undershirts, stretchies, onesies, blankets, crib sheets, clothing, etc. Boxes will be placed by the front doors of the upper and lower churches to receive your donations. We are most grateful for whatever support you can give to this project. CATHOLIC CHARITIES - REMINDER Later this month, Catholic Charities will open the waitlist for the Msgr. Edward T. Burke Apartments. This building is for elderly residents and couples where the head of the household or spouse is 62 or older. There are also units set aside for applicants 18 and older who require a wheelchair accessible unit. Income restrictions apply and are based on Section 8 guidelines. Applications will be available beginning January 26th at the rectory and will remain available until February 9th. Completed applications must be mailed to the P.O. Box listed on the application and must be postmarked by February 9th. If you need assistance with the application or have questions about the process, two application assistance workshops will take place: Sunday, January 28th, from 11:30AM to 2:00PM at St. Michael s Parish rectory, 352 42nd St. Wednesday, January 31st, from 10AM - 1PM, here at St. Rose at St. Joseph Center. SPEAK, LORD, WE ARE LISTENING In today s first reading God keeps calling out in the night to a sleeping boy. Neither the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, understands who is calling. But God s persistence convinces them. Samuel is then ready - not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. Speak, for your servant is listening (1 Samuel 3:10). In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Various people notice him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and, like the young Samuel, are ready - not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. Speak, they say, we are listening. God s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a waterfront, enveloping us, gently urging us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then willingness to listen; then, in time, the decision to act, to live according to God s word. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Ordinary Time began for us this week. On the old calendar, the feast of the Presentation, still more than two weeks away, was the last day of the Christmas season. Sadly, Bethlehem is hardly a place of peace on earth these days. The ancient Christian community has been largely uprooted by political strife. The Church of the Nativity stands (barely) in remarkable disrepair and disorder in Manger Square. The roof is crumbling, the major doorways are blocked, the wiring is faulty, and the worship life is disrupted by quarrels among Eastern Christians. The church was founded by the Emperor Constantine in 325, destroyed in a Samaritan revolt in 539, and rebuilt by the Emperor Justinian. When the area came under Muslim control in 638, the holiness of the church was respected, and in return Christians allowed Muslims to pray in the south aisle, a right still upheld. Earlier in that century, invading Persians were ordered to destroy all churches, but when they saw the magi carved over the doorway of the Church of the Nativity, they spared it out of respect for their ancestors who bore gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the same city. The Crusaders restored and redecorated the church by the twelfth century, and it is their plan that survives. Down a few stone steps is a stone grotto with a silver star marking the place of Christ s birth: when the star was stolen in 1847 it triggered an international crisis that exploded into the Crimean War. Since 1852, the church has been shared by the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian Churches. The Greeks are in charge of the grotto, but don t enjoy the best of friendships with the Armenians. Catholics have the care of the Chapel of the Manger, and avoid the squabbles by a separate entrance to the Franciscan monastery church of St. Catherine. Pray for peace in Bethlehem! - Rev. Heli mocą swojej posługi rozpoznaje głos Pana i jako pierwszy uczy Samuela gotowości do słuchania Bożego słowa. Św. Jan natomiast wskazuje swym uczniom na Jezusa Baranka Bożego. Otrzymane na chrzcie namaszczenie dało także nam udział w godności kapłańskiej i prorockiej Chrystusa, a więc uzdolniło nas do rozpoznawania przyjścia Boga i odpowiadania na Jego wezwanie. Jeśli jednak chcemy stać się sługami Słowa, niosąc Je innym, potrzebna nam jest umiejętność pozostania w cieniu, byśmy nie przesłaniali mocy i blasku Jezusa. ks. Samuel bowiem jeszcze nie znał Pana, a słowo Pańskie nie było mu jeszcze objawione. I znów Pan powtórzył po raz trzeci swe wołanie: Samuelu! Wstał więc i poszedł do Helego, mówiąc: Oto jestem: przecież mię wołałeś. Heli spostrzegł się, że to Pan woła chłopca. Rzekł więc Heli do Samuela: Idź spać! Gdyby jednak kto cię wołał, odpowiedz: Mów, Panie, bo sługa Twój słucha. Odszedł Samuel, położył się spać na swoim miejscu. Przybył Pan i stanąwszy zawołał jak poprzednim razem: Samuelu, Samuelu! Samuel odpowiedział: Mów, bo sługa Twój słucha. Samuel dorastał, a Pan był z nim. Nie pozwolił upaść żadnemu jego słowu na ziemię. 1 Samuel 3,19 Jan stał z dwoma swoimi uczniami i gdy zobaczył przechodzącego Jezusa, rzekł: Oto Baranek Boży. Dwaj uczniowie usłyszeli, jak mówił, i poszli za Jezusem. Jezus zaś odwróciwszy się i ujrzawszy, że oni idą za Nim, rzekł do nich: Czego szukacie? Oni powiedzieli do Niego: Rabbi! - to znaczy: Nauczycielu - gdzie mieszkasz? Odpowiedział im: Chodźcie, a zobaczycie. Poszli więc i zobaczyli, gdzie mieszka, i tego dnia pozostali u Niego. Było to około godziny dziesiątej. Jednym z dwóch, którzy to usłyszeli od Jana i poszli za Nim, był Andrzej, brat Szymona Piotra. Ten spotkał najpierw swego brata i rzekł do niego: Znaleźliśmy Mesjasza - to znaczy: Chrystusa. I przyprowadził go do Jezusa. A Jezus wejrzawszy na niego rzekł: Ty jesteś Szymon, syn Jana, ty będziesz nazywał się Kefas - to znaczy: Piotr. Jan 1,35-42

En el Evangelio, Jesús está afuera enseñando. Varias personas lo ven y comienzan a reunirse alrededor. Pronto se convierten en discípulos y, al igual que el joven Samuel, están listos, no para hacer algo todavía, pero dispuestos a escuchar. Habla, dicen, te escuchamos. La voz de Dios está siempre con nosotros, ya sea que estemos despiertos o dormidos.
