2 AMERICA'S 241ST INDEPENDENCE DAY WILL BE CELEBRATED ON TUESDAY, JULY 4, July 4, The Continental Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence while meeting in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Statehouse (now Independence Hall). The Congress declares the American colonies free and independent states. (Note: John Hancock signs on July 4th. The rest sign on August 2, 1776.) Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston comprised the committee that drafted the Declaration. Jefferson, regarded as the strongest and most eloquent writer, actually wrote most of the document. The committee and Congress as a whole made a total of 86 changes to Jefferson's draft. First two paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence: "When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness." 6 Thirteenth in Ordinary Time Which should we do? Turn our backs on our loved ones, or offer hospitality to all who come to us as Christ? Today we are told to do both, and yet there is no inherent contradiction here. Following Christ might mean that we need to be aware both that Christ comes first in our lives, and that losing our life for Christ's sake means to find it. We also are reminded that when we were baptized, we died with Christ, to sin and to the pull of the world, and live with him in a new life. No contradiction, no necessary confusion. Just grace and hope. DYING AND RISING The words of Saint Paul hit us smack in the face: "Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?" (Romans 6:3). This epistle is one of the choices to be read at Catholic funerals. It generally comes as something of a shock to the listeners. But the reading goes on to offer great comfort to us as Christians. "[w]e have died with Christ... we shall also live with him... raised from the dead, [Christ] dies no more... [Christ] lives for God... you too must think of yourselves as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus." HOSPITALITY One of the ways we live in God is to extend God's hospitality to all. As an old Irish rune says, "Often goes the Christ in the stranger's guise." The woman of Shunem offered hospitality to the prophet Elisha in the form of dinner and a place to stay. He rewarded her hospitality with the promise of a son. Christ explains to us just what hospitality means: "Whoever receives you receives me" and shall not lack for a reward. As theologian Paul Wadell teaches, when we offer hospitality, we not only offer food and drink, or a place to stay, or other kindness, we offer ourselves; we offer our attention to a stranger's story, wherein we learn another person's perspective, and in doing so we listen to God's story. In warning us that "Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me..." and also, "Whoever finds [their] life will lose it, and whoever loses [their] life for my sake will find it" Jesus proposes that we cultivate detachment from things that we now consider primary in our lives. Christ loves us and wants us to put him first before other commitments or desires. Our hospitality to strangers puts Christ before ourselves in just this way. 7 3 LIPCA - ŚWIĘTY TOMASZ APOSTOŁ Tomasz, zwany także Didymos, "Bliźniak", należał do ścisłego grona Dwunastu Apostołów. Ewangelie wspominają go kilkakrotnie: kiedy jest gotów pójść z Jezusem na śmierć (J 11, 16); w Wieczerniku podczas Ostatniej Wieczerzy (J 14, 5); osiem dni po zmartwychwstaniu, kiedy ze sceptycyzmem wkłada rękę w bok Jezusa (J 20, 19nn); nad Jeziorem Genezaret, gdy jest świadkiem cudownego połowu ryb po zmartwychwstaniu Jezusa (J 21, 2). O świętym Tomaszu Apostole mówi się czasem "niewierny Tomasz". Oczywiście nie oznacza to jakoby miał być niewierny Jezusowi. Miał tylko zwykłe ludzkie wątpliwości, czy rzeczywiście pozostali apostołowie ujrzeli zmartwychwstałego Jezusa: "Jeśli nie ujrzę na rękach jego przebicia gwoździami i nie włożę palca mego w miejsce gwoździ i nie włożę ręki mojej w bok jego, nie uwierzę" (Jn 20, 24). Tę scenę często przedstawiano na obrazach. O późniejszym życiu i śmierci św. Tomasza znajdujemy informacje tylko w apokryfach pismach o tematyce biblijnej, nie uznanych za wiarygodne i natchnione. Według tradycji św. Tomasz ewangelizował Fartów (Iran), zginął śmiercią męczeńską 3 lipca 72 roku w Kalamina w Indiach. Miał zostać przebity włócznią i właśnie włócznia jest jego atrybutem. Obok: na obrazie słynnego malarza hiszpańskiego, Velazqueza, święty trzyma również książkę atrybut wszystkich apostołów. Pochowano go w Mailapur (dzisiaj przedmieście Madrasu). W III wieku relikwie przeniesiono do Edessy, potem na wyspę Chios. W 1258 r. krzyżowcy przewieźli je do Ortony w Italii. W apokryfach zawarte są opowieści o działalności misyjnej św. Tomasza na terenie dzisiejszego Iraku i Indii. W jednej z nich znajduje się informacja jakoby święty wybudował pałac króla Guduphary w Indiach. Dlatego drugim atrybutem św. Tomasza jest często węgielnica: narzędzie budowlane służące do wyznaczania linii prostopadłych i sprawdzania, czy narożnik budowli ma rzeczywiście kąt prosty. Św. Tomasz jest patronem Indii, Portugalii, Urbino, Parmy, Rygi, Zamościa; architektów, budowniczych, cieśli, geodetów, kamieniarzy, murarzy, stolarzy, małżeństw i teologów.
