It is not all that different from how we prepare any room for the season. We move some things out and bring others in: lights, candles, and appropriate decorations. We can also apply this to our hearts, both our individual heart and our community heart. Today four voices offer direction. Jeremiah calls us to remember the God who worked on the house of Israel and Judah, bringing a just shoot (Jeremiah 33:15) to lower from the old stump that Israel had become, replacing lifeless leadership with a new branch of the house of David. Justice would lourish for all the people. Jeremiah calls us to trust God s designs that go beyond the surface. Jesus words, however, seem to contradict all this, predicting signs that will dismay and perplex, with people dying of fright. What happened to security and justice? But all this frightening activity is not for those waiting on the Lord. Jesus words are strong: Don t cower; stand erect. Don t let your heart sink into sleep, dive into drink, or be corrupted by carousing. Redemption is in the room, a heartbeat away. Paul reminds us that we best renovate our hearts by illing them with God s love for others. We do this by how we treat each other. A new year offers time to bring healing to damaged relationships, to reach out to someone we have neglected. And God works along with us, pouring the Holy Spirit into our hearts. James A. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, These are exciting days for the Church in America with Pope Francis inspiring Catholics and non-catholics alike during his visit to the United States. From the very beginning of his ponti icate, Pope Francis has continually called us to missionary discipleship. In his homily in Philadelphia, he challenged all of us to explore new ways so that our Church can be more equipped to carry on the mission of Christ: One of the great challenges facing the Church in this generation is to foster in all the faithful a sense of personal responsibility for the Church s mission, and to enable them to ful ill that responsibility as missionary disciples, as a leaven of the Gospel in our world. This will require creativity in adapting to changed situations, carrying forward the legacy of the past not primarily by maintaining our structures and institutions, which have served us well, but above all by being open to the possibilities which the Spirit opens up to us and communicating the joy of the Gospel, daily and in every season of our life. In my year in Chicago, I have been inspired by many of you and have great hope for our future. The joy of the Gospel is alive in Chicago. I have also been learning of many realities that challenge us to evaluate how we work as parishe s to share the joy of the Gospel into the future. The Holy Father is right, we should be attentive to the reality before us. We know that the landscape of the Church in Chicago has changed since many of our parishes were founded, with demographics shifting greatly over time. Some of our parishes have aging facilities that cost more to repair than we have. We also have fewer priests available to pastor our parishes. We are sometimes challenged to fully live out the mission because we are spreading resources too thin. Pope Francis reminds us that we have the creativity to take on these challenges with joy if we are open to the possibilities the Spirit opens up to us. Earlier this week I met with all priests in the Archdiocese to begin the discussion of how to address these challenges in the coming years. This is just the beginning of a long process to determine how to serve the pastoral needs of the Archdiocese and strengthen parish vitality for the long-term future. As the process moves forward, I am committed to a process that involves discipline, wide consultation and community involvement. We want to ensure that our plans for the future best meet the needs of the people of God, respond to the Church s call to mission, and offer long-term sustainability. From time to time you will be hearing more about this effort, but I wanted to let you know of this development, because I need and want your prayers for its success. You are in mine. Jubilee Year of Mercy November 29, 2015 First Sunday of Advent Besides a new liturgical year, this Advent features an additional beginning next week s opening of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, a graced opportunity to contemplate more profoundly and live more concretely the mystery of God s unconditional love. Pope Francis says that mercy, as the bridge connecting God and the human family, opens our hearts to welcome God s love for us sinners and our eyes to recognize others, especially society s least loved and most vulnerable, as brothers and sisters entrusted to our care. Today s scriptures provide a perfect Jubilee preparation. Jeremiah comforts us with the promise of God s justice; Paul challenges us to abound in love for all; Luke bids us anticipate Jesus future coming as the joyful advent of our redemption. But in a unique way, this Jubilee Year s Advent reminds us that Jesus, whose coming we await, is already present among us, in those for whom we need to become instruments of God s mercy.
