(773) Fax (773) Treasures From Our Tradition Veterans Day began with the signing of a symbolic treaty between the Allies and Germany ending World War I (then called the Great War ) on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The auspicious date was actually a well-established religious holiday, the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, a beloved soldier saint of the army of Rome. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Britain, but of course the feast of Saint Martin endures. Martin was named after Mars, the god of war, and against the advice of his parents he went on his own to church. He became a catechumen at the age of ten. By fifteen he was enlisted in the cavalry in France. Coming across a poor man, Martin had an impulse to divide his bright red soldier s cape and clothe him. He later had the insight that he had served Christ, and the other half of his cape became a lifelong sign to him of his duty to serve the poor. Housed in a tiny church capella or chapel, the cape became a great object of pilgrimage on the way to Compostella, and a favored place for the prayers of soldiers. Martin was not so eager to serve as bishop as he had been as a soldier, and legend says that he hid in a barn filled with geese to avoid episcopal election. To this day, the customary meal for November 11 is goose! Traditionally, this is the last feast day before winter closes in, and begins a period of fasting once known as Saint Martin s Lent or Martinmas, that later developed into the season of Advent. Rev. 3 Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three National Independence Day Święto Odzyskania Niepodległości W XVIII w. silna niegdyś Rzeczpospolita zaczęła się chylić ku upadkowi co doprowadziło do trzech rozbiorów Polski, ostatni trzeci rozbiór trwał od roku 1975, przez 123 lata, aż do 1918 roku kiedy to, 11 listopada, Rada Regencyjna (organ sprawujący władzę nad Królestwem Polskim) przekazała władzę nad wojskiem, Józefowi Piłsudzkiemu, który dzień wcześniej powrócił z internowania w Magdeburgu, a w trzy dni później rozwiązała się, przekazując mu pełną władzę ustanowiając go Naczelnikiem Państwa. Powstała Druga Rzeczpospolita. Dzień 11 listopada ustanowiono świętem państwowym po raz pierwszy dopiero w 1937 roku. W latach podczas okupacji hitlerowskiej oraz w okresie od 1945 do 1989 roku, w czasie rządów komunistycznych obchodzenie święta 11 listopada było zakazane. Dopiero w roku 1989, ustawą Sejmu, przywrócono obchody tego święta, od tego roku Święto Niepodległości jest najważniejszym świętem państwowym, a dzień 11 listopada jest dniem wolnym od pracy. Święto obchodzone jest w całym kraju lecz najważniejsze obchody odbywają się w Warszawie na placu Józefa Piłsudzkiego pod Grobem Nieznanego Żołnierza. Dzisiaj, 11 listopada, przypada dokładnie setna rocznica Odzyskania Niepodległości Polski. W naszym kościele pragniemy w tym dniu, w szczególny sposób włączyć się w obchody tej rocznicy w czasie Mszy św. o godzinie 10:30. Z tej racji dzieci i młodzież ze szkoły polskiej im. Ks. Prałata Stanisława Cholewińskiego wezmą udział we wspomnianej Mszy św., a po Mszy św. wykonają specjalny program patriotycznoreligijny, dla uczczenia niepodległości Polski. Bardzo prosimy i zapraszamy wszystkich do udziału w tej Mszy św., abyśmy wspólnie, również jako Polacy, podziękowali Bogu za wolność naszej Ojczyzny po latach zaborów. is a national day in Poland celebrated on November 11th to commemorate the anniversary of the restoration of Poland s sovereignty as the Second Polish Republic in 1918 from the German, Austrian and Russian Empires. Following the partitions in the late 18th century, Poland ceased to exist for 123 years until the end of World War I, when the destruction of the neighboring powers allowed the country to reemerge. It is a non-working day in Poland. The restoration of Poland's independence was gradual. The 11 November date chosen is the one on which Marshal Józef Piłsudski assumed control of Poland. The holiday was constituted in 1937 and was celebrated only twice before World War II. After the war, the communist authorities of the People's Republic removed Independence Day from the calendar, though reclamation of independence continued to be celebrated informally on 11 November. The holiday was officially replaced by the National Day of Poland's Revival as Poland's National Day, celebrated on the 22 July anniversary of the communist PKWN Manifesto under Joseph Stalin. In particular, during the ties, in many cities, including Warsaw, informal marches and celebrations were held, with the outlawed Solidarity Movement supporters participating. Typically these marches were brutally dispersed by the communist militarized police forces, with many participants arrested and often tortured by the security police. During this time the November 11th Independence Day marches, alongside the Constitution Day on May 3rd celebration gatherings, also banned by the communist authorities, were the customary dates of demonstrations by the opponents of the communist regime. As Poland emerged from communism in 1989, the original holiday on its original 11 November date was restored. Today, November 11th, is the exact date of the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence. Our parish is joining in on this celebration at the 10:30 AM Polish Mass. The children and youth from the Fr. Stanislaw Cholewinski Polish School will take part in this mentioned Mass and after Mass will perform a special patriotic and religious program to celebrate the independence of Poland. We invite everyone to take part in this Mass so that we can all together, many of us of coming from a Polish background, thank God for the freedom of our Homeland after the years of the Partitions.
