Ponieważ termin zwykły w języku polskim najczęściej oznacza coś, co nie jest szczególne ani charakterystyczne, wielu ludzi uważa, że Czas Zwyczajny odnosi się do części kalendarza Kościoła Katolickiego, które są nieistotne. Mimo że okres zwykłego czasu stanowi większość roku liturgicznego w Kościele katolickim, fakt, że Czas Zwyczajny odnosi się do okresów, które wypadają poza głównymi sezonami liturgicznymi, wzmacnia to wrażenie. Jednak zwykły czas jest daleki od nieważnego lub nieinteresującego. Zwyczajny Czas nazywany jest "zwykłym" nie dlatego, że jest powszechny, ale po prostu dlatego, że tygodnie zwykłego czasu są policzone. Łacińskie słowo ordinalis, które odnosi się do liczb w serii, pochodzi od łacińskiego słowa ordo, z którego otrzymujemy angielskie słowo ordinary. Tak więc ponumerowane tygodnie czasu zwyczajnego w rzeczywistości reprezentują uporządkowane życie Kościoła - okres, w którym żyjemy naszym życiem, ani w ucztowaniu (jak w okresach Bożego Narodzenia i Wielkanocy), ani w bardziej surowej pokucie (jak w Adwencie i Wielki Post), ale w czujności i oczekiwaniu powtórnego przyjścia Chrystusa. This is why in this bulletin I would like to talk about what Ordinary Time Means in the Catholic Church. Because the term ordinary in English most often means something that's not special or distinctive, many people think that Ordinary Time refers to parts of the calendar of the Catholic Church that are unimportant. Even though the season of Ordinary Time makes up most of the liturgical year in the Catholic Church, the fact that Ordinary Time refers to those periods that fall outside of the major liturgical seasons reinforces this impression. Yet Ordinary Time is far from unimportant or uninteresting. Ordinary Time is called "ordinary" not because it is common but simply because the weeks of Ordinary Time are numbered. The Latin word ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the English word order. Thus, the numbered weeks of Ordinary Time, in fact, represent the ordered life Easter seasons) or in more severe penance (as in Advent and Lent), but in watchfulness and expectation of the Second Coming of Christ. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Ordinary Time began for us this week. On the old calendar, the feast of the Presentation, still more than two weeks away, was the last day of the Christmas season. Sadly, Bethlehem is hardly a place of peace on earth these days. The ancient Christian community has been largely uprooted by political strife. The Church of the Nativity stands (barely) in remarkable disrepair and disorder in Manger Square. The roof is crumbling, the major doorways are blocked, the wiring is faulty, and the worship life is disrupted by quarrels among Eastern Christians. The church was founded by the Emperor Constantine in 325, destroyed in a Samaritan revolt in 539, and rebuilt by the Emperor Justinian. When the area came under Muslim control in 638, the holiness of the church was respected, and in return Christians allowed Muslims to pray in the south aisle, a right still upheld. Earlier in that century, invading Persians were ordered to destroy all churches, but when they saw the magi carved over the doorway of the Church of the Nativity, they spared it out of respect for their ancestors who bore gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the same city. The Crusaders restored and redecorated the church by the twelfth century, and it is their plan that survives. Down a few stone steps is a stone grotto with a silver star marking the place of Christ s birth: when the star was stolen in 1847 it triggered an international crisis that exploded into the Crimean War. Since 1852, the church has been shared by the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian Churches. The Greeks are in charge of the grotto, but don t enjoy the best of friendships with the Armenians. Catholics have the care of the Chapel of the Manger, and avoid the squabbles by a separate entrance to the Franciscan monastery church of St. Catherine. Pray for peace in Bethlehem! Rev. THE LAMB OF GOD Behold the Lamb of God! We hear this phrase every Sunday at Mass, but there s a good chance that many Roman Catholics do not know who in the Bible originally spoke it. The phrase appears only in the Gospel of John, on the lips of John the Baptist, who utters it twice. In today s Gospel reading, John proclaims Jesus as the Lamb of God, and two of John s own disciples then follow Christ. A little bit later Andrew, who heard John and then followed Jesus, brings his brother Simon to be re-named Cephas, or Peter. A careful look at these Bible verses shows us the mission of everyone baptized into the Body of Christ: we must always proclaim our faith in Christ, so that others will follow him. We may not know how the will of God might work through those we bring to Christ; that is not the point. The point is that our ongoing mission as a church is to bring others to Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. St. Hedwig s Faith Formation Program The goal of participation in this program is to prepare oneself, as practicing Catholics, to receive the sacraments. Being Catholic is a lifelong endeavor and involves much more than receiving a select number of sacraments. It is a process that continues through one s life and ideally should reflect in one s daily life. Please come and join us Our class program is held on Thursday: Grades 1-5 from 5:00pm to 6:00pm Grades 6-8 from 6:15pm to 7:20pm First Grade In the second half of the semester, our First Graders will learn more about the life of Jesus. They will hear stories about Jesus growing up and showing us how He obeyed Mary, His mother and Saint Joseph, His foster father. We will touch upon some of the many miracles that Jesus performed. The children will learn that Jesus was a teacher who walked from town to town so everyone can learn that God loves us and wants us to be in Heaven with Him some day. As well as receiving a list of The Ten Commandments that are God s laws to live by, the First Graders will learn about the Seven Sacraments that are God s grace to us. The Mystery of the Blessed Trinity and the coming of the Holy Spirit to the apostles on Pentecost Sunday will reinforce our children to try to do good deeds on earth so they too can continue the work of Jesus. With each class, the children will continue to say their prayers and be encouraged to pray daily and attend Mass with their parents. Parents are the first teachers to their children and it is very important that they help their children learn their prayers by heart. Our children must realize that faith does not stop after class.
