TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We had sixteen hundred years experience with one Eucharistic Prayer in our repertoire, and the liturgical reforms of the Council of Trent shaped the way we worshiped for four hundred years. In the last years of the Tridentine Mass, the early 1960s, we tended to see children as miniature adults. Fully rooted in the Sunday assembly by the decision of Pope Saint Pius X to push Communion back to the age of seven or so from the standard age of twelve to fourteen years during the early 1900s, children were still more tolerated than acknowledged. The Mass was in Latin, and by the 1960s the people had begun to regain their voices in the dialogue Mass, so the focus was on training little children to recite or sing in Latin. The new attention to the experience of children, their ability to enter into ritual, their spontaneity, their ability to grasp key concepts in faith, felt untraditional. Yet we can trace in our tradition the ways in which children have long been given a special place in the assembly. From earliest times, boys have served in choirs and certain ministries in monasteries and in parish churches. Girls were sometimes entrusted to nuns, learning liturgical chants and the arts. Yet, in our day, the formation of a Lectionary for children and Eucharistic Prayers suited to them are truly tremendous breakthroughs in our treasury of prayer. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Our class program is held on Thursday: Grades 1-5 from 5:00pm to 6:00pm Grades 6-8 from 6:15pm to 7:20pm Prayer, Sacraments, Devotions As catechists or religion teachers, we are here to be the helpers in the process of teaching the children about our faith. The family has the greatest influence in shaping the identities of their children. It is in the home where our Catholic identities are formed. Children live by the morals and traditions that they learn at home. We are here to support families in this very important work. When your child attends Mass or prays with you before bedtime they see it as valuable. Praying the Rosary together or attending a special liturgical celebration with family makes it meaningful. Incorporating simple Catholic traditions like Grace before meals to express our gratitude to God goes a long way. The teachers in our program want to encourage families to join us in our Liturgies, Stations of the Cross and celebrations of First Holy Communion and Confirmation throughout the year. As a community of faith we can work together to help the children grow in their faith and love of God and mankind. Mary Ann Dziomba, 6 th grade Catechist Dear Parents, Last year we had local pilgrimage to St. Agnes Cathedral. Many of you encouraged us to go this year for a local pilgrimage as well. This year we plan to go to Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston, NY (aprox. 20 min. away). The main theme for our pilgrimage is Holiness for everyone.
