Waclaw Lech, OCD Resident Rev. Jacek Chodzynski, OCD Parish Staff Music Director (Eng.) Mr. Richard Sokas Music Director (Pol.) Mr. Henryk Zygmunt Treasures From Our Tradition Once the way was cleared for additional Eucharistic Prayers, those who were appointed to compose them had to look deep within the tradition for sources. One of the prescriptions for new prayers was that they be unencumbered by useless repitition. From the start, therefore, the writers knew that the old Roman Canon, which had the priest bowing and crossing himself many times in a long, complex prayer, was not a model of simplicity. Aside from the prayers treasured by Eastern Christians, there is an obvious model from ancient Rome. For about a hundred years now, the historical text Apostolic Tradition has shed some light for us on the shadowy shape of worship in the early church. In it, its author, Hippolytus, took care to record the actual texts of worship used at the time. He himself has a shadow side, since he was so ardently conservative in his tastes that he broke ties with the Bishop of Rome and became irst in the line of history s anti-popes. At the eleventh hour, however, he reconciled with his enemies and actually died a martyr. In fact, he was shipped off to the Sardinian mines as a slave with the true pope as his companion in chains. Because his tussle with the pope was over theological innovations and not liturgical texts, we are sure that his account of the style of Eucharistic Prayer in the third century is accurate. It forms the core of today s Eucharistic Prayer II. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Convent 5434 S. Lockwood Ave. Chicago, IL 60638 tel. (773) 491-6888 tel. Important Research on the Mental -Health Effects of Abortion The British Journal of Psychiatry has recently released research on the mental-health effects of abortion. This new analysis offers the largest available body of evidence on the psychological impact of abortion. Overall, it presents a very strong body of peer-reviewed research showing that abortion signi icantly increases the likelihood of depression, anxiety, alcoholism, drug use, and suicide. This analysis was both rigorous and thorough, taking into account demographic factors and prior history of mentalhealth problems. Overall, it is based on 22 published studies and brings together data on 877,181 participants, 163,381 of whom had experienced an abortion. Furthermore, its appearance in a top psychiatry journal indicates that it was carefully critiqued and evaluated by respected public-health scholars. It will be interesting to see how much attention this analysis will receive from the mainstream media. Within the past few years, both the New York Times and the Washington Post have run stories about purported research that allegedly indicated that abortion had little effect on the mental health of women. Furthermore, the mainstream media diligently avoids covering any studies on the harmful effects of abortion. Hopefully, the prestige of the journal, the volume of studies included, and the consistency of the indings will encourage the mainstream media to give a second look to this vitally important issue. Celebrating 100 Years of Change Five years ago, Catholic Charities started its Mobile Outreach program, providing services in the city of Chicago 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year through outreach teams dispatched to respond to requests for emergency shelter or to conduct well-being checks. This past year, more than 8,600 individuals and families were given assistance through the Mobile Outreach program. This program, the only one of its kind in the country, is just one of the ways Catholic Charities has evolved to meet the needs of our communities for more than 100 years. Help us celebrate Catholic Charities "Century of Hope" by sharing your stories and photos on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with the hashtag #ccofchicago100 and be sure to tag @CCofChicago.
