Page Two July 5, 2009 Spiritual Reflection The neighbors and family of Jesus in Mark s Gospel passage today think that Jesus has a thorn: his dubious credentials to be a teacher in the synagogue or a worker of mighty deeds. Some of us think that we have this thorn of insufficient qualifications to be witnesses for God s plan of salvation in Christ. Sometimes we use this imaginary thorn of ours to excuse ourselves from the challenging work of living thy kingdom come or to lead ourselves into a false humility about our inadequacies as disciples. We can learn a lesson from Jesus and Paul today. Each of us, in spite of physical or personal shortcomings or limitations (real or imagined), is called and chosen to be a messenger of the saving grace of God, each in our own way. Whether we are spouse, parent, child, student, worker, employer whatever role we have in our life, God can work in us and through us to be signs of grace for others. When we find ourselves afflicted with the thorn of self-doubt, let us use that weakness to find our strength in God, and through our faith in Christ, continue to proclaim the Good News of salvation. Mark s Gospel account today is built on a double astonishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of Jesus are astonished that He taught in the synagogue with wisdom and worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is amazed that they have no faith in Him because they know His origins, not because of any faults with His teaching or ministry. As with many of Mark s passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus two-fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus return to His native place, and further points out that He is in the midst of His own family members there. From the very people He expected the most, Jesus received the least. In the day of the Gospel s writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson to the house of Israel: the God of the covenant expected the greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the least. This is a good source for reflection on our part, we who are Jesus followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue and for our lives to be seen as signs of His power, He must expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will He? Can He? Does He? Or is He, once again, amazed by its absence? Exceprts taken from: Sunday by Sunday & Bulletin Building Blocks PROROK W SWOJEJ OJCZYŹNIE Jezus większość swojego życia spędził w Nazarecie. Kochał bardzo to miasto, choć ono Go nie kochało. Często do niego wracał, nawet podczas swego publicznego nauczania. Tam bowiem spędził swoją młodość, tam miał swoich rówieśników, tam też żyli Jego rodzice i krewni. Jaką postawę my dziś przyjmujemy wobec Chrystusa? Wymaga On tylko wiary w siebie. -ks. Idzi-

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Five ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST One of our goals at St. Priscilla is to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those parishioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our parish bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We are instituting a new process regarding calling in names for the bulletin s Pray For list. Names for the sick list placed in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their immediate family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will also be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
