Page Two October 10, 2010 Spiritual Reflection The sight of a leper in biblical times was enough to singe the tassels off a prayer shawl: clothes torn, hair worn long and shaggy, beards tied, open and oozing sores, shouting to any and all approaching, Unclean! Unclean! Bad as it was to be covered with sores, Jewish law demanded that lepers look even more ghoulish to scare people away. So imagine the horror and disgust of Jesus followers as the ten lepers boldly approach. One of them is a Samaritan, which to the Jews of Jesus time was like having leprosy twice. All ten lepers shout out to Jesus to pity them. He does, telling them to show themselves to the temple priests, who according to the Law must pronounce them clean (healed). Off they go. Along the way, all ten are cured. Yet only one of the ten right, the Samaritan returns to offer thanks. Imagine how Jesus feels. Like a leper, maybe? Each of today s readings continues the theme of faith that was first heralded in the liturgy two weeks ago. Today s liturgy throws the spotlight on faith from three different angles. The first reading begins with a miracle a hard act to follow. Yet Naaman follows it with an act of gratitude, which, in turn, is quickly followed by faith. Here, faith is born of the miraculous cure and Naaman s response of thanks. In the Gospel, the Samaritan s cure follows faith, which in turn prompts gratitude and praise. These two readings focus on the faith of the receiver of gifts. They declare that for the receiver of gifts, there can be no such thing as a quiet or anonymous faith. The gift of faith is meant to be unfettered, not bound and locked away. Faith is a treasure to share, a prod to praise, a justification for jubilation and joy. In the reading from 2 Timothy, however, the focus is not on the receiver of gifts, but on the giver. Paul wants his readers to recognize the faithfulness of Christ. So faithful is Christ, says Paul, that nothing we can do, no infidelity on our part, will cause him to alter his faithful stand toward us. Paul backs up his claim by reminding us that he is in chains precisely because of his commitment to Christ s faithfulness. Paul exhorts us that our faith in Christ s faithfulness will result in our ultimate salvation. All of the readings announce that God s faithful love will issue in power to bring salvation to all the earth. It is important to remember that in biblical times, those afflicted with leprosy (any of many diseases that caused eruptions of the skin, not only Hansen s disease true leprosy) were banished from both the social and the liturgical life of the community. Thus, any remedy for or release from leprosy was grounds for double jubilation. Only the Samaritan knew how to jubilate. In fact, it is quite proper to call the Samaritan s response to his healing eucharistic. True thanksgiving required the presence of three characters: the giver, the receiver, and an assembly. It was not sufficient to slink quietly away in order to offer a benefactor private thanks. The gratitude instigated by another s benevolence required the receiver to reveal to as many people as possible the graciousness of the giver. True gratitude always found expression in thank-filled praise. The Samaritan knew what it meant to give thanks, to be a eucharistic person. He knew that his cure had not only returned him to health and society, but to the life of the worshiping community as well. His cure, then, became a sign of salvation, just as his disease had been a sign of sin. Copyright 2003, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. TRĄD CIAŁA I TRĄD DUSZY Z prośbą o uzdrowienie zwracali się do Jezusa zwykle poszczególni ludzie. Dziś widzimy ich grupowo - aż dziesięciu trędowatych błaga Go o przywrócenie zdrowia. Tych dziesięciu uzdrowionych, oczarowani pełnią zdrowia, powrotem do sił fizycznych i duchowych, perspektywą normalnego życia, wracali szybko do swoich osiedli, domów, rodzin. - ks.
