Page Two September 15, 2013 Religious Education News Catechetical Sunday This year, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday on September 14 and 15, 2013. Those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists are called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to honor the people of our Parish Community who bring the Church s teachings to our children. All catechists from St. Priscilla Religious Education Program received a special blessing at the 4:00PM Mass on Saturday, September 14. The following people have volunteered to teach in our program: ANTOINETTE SANDERS - Grade 1 JOANNA RYDZEWSKI - Grade 5 SISTER AGNES FRANCIS JUNG - Grade 2 MAGDALENA KLESZCZ - Grade 6 YOLANDA GOMEZ - Grade 3 ROMAN HARMATA - Junior High REBECCA JAMROZ - Grade 4 WILLIAM BURNS - Junior High ANNA BABBO - Sacramental Preparation Class Catechetical Sunday gives us all a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the rolse that each person plays in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. It provides an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as the community of faith. Religious Education classes started on Saturday, September 7th. We are still accepting students and will do so until the end of September. If you have not yet registered, there is still time to do so. Call the Religious Ed. Office (773-685-3785) for further information. Church Etiquette: Some Things You Should Know While in Church In the Catholic Church, there are a lot of customs and traditions that are important parts of our worship. Some are cultural; some are pious customs. Some are essential; some are not. From time-to-time, we need to address some of these various etiquette issues to inform our communities how we can best understand each other and work together to worship the all-holy Trinity. ENTERING THE CHURCH (LATE): The time to arrive at church is before the service starts, but for some unknown reason, it has become the custom - or rather the bad habit - for some to come to church late. If you arrive after the Divine Liturgy begins, try to enter the church quietly - and observe what is happening. LEAVING BEFORE DISMISSAL: Leaving church before the Dismissal - besides being rude - deprives us of a blessing. Worship has a beginning ("In the name of the Father ") and an end ("Go in peace "). To leave immediately after Communion is to treat church like a fast food restaurant where we come and go as we please. We live in a fast-paced world where we seem to be hurrying from place to place. But in God's presence, we need to make every attempt to fight this pressure to move on to the next thing on the day's agenda. We deprive ourselves of blessings by not being still and participating in God's holiness. CELLPHONES: Never forget to turn off your cellphones, as well as other electronic devices that you may have with you, before you enter church to avoid interrupting the church service. Surely you don t want all eyes on you when your phone rings and you have no choice but to silence it. Page Four September 15, 2013 DRESS: Remember the time when people put on their "Sunday best" to go to church? In fact, dress clothes were often referred to as Sunday clothes. In all areas of our lives, we should offer Christ our best. And the same is true of our dress. We should offer Christ our ''Sunday best", not our everyday, common or beach wear. And we should dress modestly, not in a flashy way that would bring attention to ourselves. Our dress should always be becoming of a Christian - especially at church. TALKING DURING CHURCH: Isn't it great to come to church and see friends and family members? But wait until after Mass or in the parking lot to say "Hi" to them. It just isn't appropriate to greet people and have a conversation with them during the services. Besides being disrespectful towards God, it is rude towards the other people in the church who are trying to worship. Talk to God while in church through your prayers, hymns, and thanksgiving, and to your friends in the hall afterwards. We thank all parishioners and guests alike, for respecting and following these guidelines. Please see additional information on posters presented at entrances to the Church. ST. PRISCILLA PARISH Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2013 The 2013 Fiscal Year ended with a surplus of $257,857. Our budget is finally balanced and all the loans and bills have been paid. The last bill was for Priests Retirement Fund. Presently we are being charged for the Priests Retirement Fund monthly and we pay it with other obligations to the Archdiocese. Our Sunday collection and special collections are the main source of operating income for the Parish. We are also getting help from our auxiliary groups which make substantial monetary contributions. The Catholic Women s Club organized many events. The ladies are filled with initiative and ideas. One event, was a dinner at Baker s Square Restaurant, which collected a substantial profit to our parish. The Catholic Women s Club contributed a total of $5,721.07. Our Polish Club has been working tirelessly every year to provide nice entertainment and raise funds for the Church. Two events which include; the Fall Dance and the Valentine s Day Dance, generated $11,356.72 for the Church. The Filipino group donated $1,863.28 from their Simbang Gabi Mass. Thank you all, for your time and effort. The Annual Catholic Appeal goal for 2012 was $25,781.16 and we exceeded it by $2,591.34. We received this surplus this Fiscal Year. This year, we received a donation from the estate of our deceased parishioner Aurelia Stalmach in the amount of $5,000. Please keep Aurelia in your prayers. The main expense of 2012 was the replacement of the air conditioning unit in the Church. The total cost was $42,900. This was a very necessary investment, considering the frequent repairs which had been done over the years. We polled the parishioners and the overwhelming majority approved this expense. Our budget may be affected in the future by the City of Chicago vote against the exemption of water bills for religious institutions. Over 1,000 churches of all denominations may be affected by this decision. St. Priscilla collected 800 petitions from our parishioners which we presented to our Alderman Mr. Nicholas Spasato. He and 28 other Alderman introduced an amendment to restore the water fee exemption and voted for it. The issue has not been resolved yet but a compromised amendment was reached. Catholic Churches are being represented by Jen Shankie from the Archdiocese Real Estate Department. We have monthly special collections called Sharing. We sponsor St. Kevin s Church. This year we raised $7,493.98 for this Parish. Thank you for your generosity and willingness to help the less fortunate. The Pastor and the staff of St. Priscilla, would like to thank all parishioners for your generous support of our Eucharistic mission! Please see the next page for additional fiscal report information.
