The sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella assured that the news would flash around Europe with an air of authority that other discoverers lacked. One of the oft-mentioned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixth-century Irish monk who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to the Isle of the Blessed in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away from his monastery for seven years. Upon his return, the stories of adventures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan, a very popular adventure in those days. Only after his American journey is Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and Scotland. In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America from Ireland in a leather-bound boat, traveling in summer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Iceland to Newfoundland, and encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales, and porpoises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this too quickly: just as the ancient Egyptian monks sought to live in the desert, for the Celtic monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent. Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a message of consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of God, is sharper than any two-edged sword. We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus, the living word of God, the embodiment of wisdom, has strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man who comes to him seeking answers to his most profound questions. Just when the young man thought he had done enough to fulfill God s commands, more was asked of him. This is no less true for us. Copyright J. S. Teresy od Jezusa, Dziewicy i Doktora Kościoła Teresa de Ahumada, wielka święta Zakonu Karmelitańskiego, urodziła się 28 marca 1515 roku w Awili w Hiszpanii. W wieku dwudziestu lat wstąpiła do klasztoru Wcielenia w Awili i uczyniła wielkie postępy na drodze ewangelicznej doskonałości. Kiedy pojęła się reformy Zakonu, spotkały ją liczne trudności i sprzeciwy. Umocniona łaską bożą, wszystko mężnie zniosła dla miłości Pana. W 1562 roku założyła w Awili pierwszy klasztor swej reformy i przyjęła w nim imię Teresy od Jezusa. Pozostawiła po sobie pisma, w których ukazała drogę do zjednoczenia z Bogiem i dała świadectwo głębokich przeżyć mistycznych. Zmarła w Alba de Tormes 15 października 1582 roku. Kanonizował ją papież Grzegorz XV w 1622 roku, zaś Paweł VI dnia 27 września 1970 roku ogłosił ją Doktorem Kościoła Powszechnego. Boże, Ty przez swojęgo Ducha natchnąłeś świętą Teresę od Jezusa (naszą Matkę), aby wskazała Kościołowi drogę wiodącą do doskonałości, spraw, abyśmy si karmili jej duchową nauką i zapłonęli pragnieniem prawdziwej świętości. Saint Teresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church Born in Avila, Spain on March 28th 1515, St. Teresa was a Carmelite who reformed the Order with the help of St. John of the Cross. In those years and following the Council of Trent, she contributed greatly to a renewal of the entire ecclesiastical community. Her highly active life in no way distracted her from an equally contemplative one, as she wrote several outstanding works of asceticism and mysticism. Her spiritual teachings are a guide to a life in union with God. She died in Alba de Tormes on the 15th of October in 1582. She was declared Doctor of the Church on the 27th of September in 1970. Father, by your Spirit you raised up St. Teres of Jesus to show your Church the way to perfection, May her inspired teaching awaken in us a longing for true holiness. During the month of October, Rosary Devotions are on every Saturday of the month after 5:00 PM Mass in the English language, and every Sunday of the month after 10:30 AM Mass in the Polish language. Everyone is invited to join us in prayers. The annual October attendance head count for the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Churches began last Sunday and runs for the entire month. We hope that all our parishioners will be counted here at Saint Camillus.
