Timothy and Titus FRANCIS DE SALES Born in Savoy on 21 August 1567, Francis longed to devote himself to the Christian ministry, but his father wished him to take up more worldly pursuits. Francis obediently attended the University of Paris, as his father wished, but all the time his heart was set on the religious life. He learned philosophy and rhetoric, but he insisted on learning theology too. The tensions made the young Francis miserable. For a while he even lost the certainty that God loved him. In his prayers he would admit that he feared God would desert him. Never let me curse you, my God, he would cry. God heard his prayers and his doubts were lifted. But as a result, he learned to care for those who similarly doubted their salvation. His gentleness arose not from weakness but from his own experience of suffering. Francis worked in Geneva, which was mostly Calvinist, and in 1602 he became Bishop of Geneva. He was the ideal person for this position, combining deep commitment to the faith with a love of his fellow men and women. So great was his care for individuals that some of his converts set out his teaching in a Treatise on the Love of God, published in 1616. Just before his death a nun asked him to write down the virtue he most desired. He wrote one word: Humility. A POINT OF INTEREST: This is a general rule for all blessed objects and sacramentals. Sacramentals should be burned and then buried. Larger sacramental that don t burn should be altered so they no longer appear to be a sacramental. For example, a statue can be broken up into small pieces and then buried. Broken rosaries can be further disassembled and burned or buried. Objects made of metal can be taken to a silver-platter and melted. Some hesitate to break up or burn sacred things. But it is generally held that items lose their blessing if they can no longer be used. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Catholic Charities VIP Center in Lynbrook need volunteers to assist in driving visually impaired people to and from this center on Thursdays. We have needs for drivers in the Bellmore, Bethpage, Cedarhurst, East Rockaway, Floral Park, Hempstead, Merrick, New Hyde Park, North Bellmore, Oceanside, Wantagh and Woodmere areas.
