TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In a few weeks time, at the Chrism Mass of the diocese, fresh sacramental oils will be blessed and chrism consecrated for use in every parish. Olive oil is the main ingredient of chrism, but olive oil with some exotic additives that change its character and purpose. Rich balsam and perfumes separate chrism from the pantry. Food no longer, neither is this oil for grooming or toning muscles. It has a breathtaking aroma that is both alluring and enduring. The prayer of consecration is a good meditation for the coming Lenten season since it focuses us on the goal of our journey, linking it with the olive-bearing dove at the end of Noah s stormy voyage of forty days. The dove signaled the birth of a new world, a society reborn from the wreckage of the old, drowned world of sin. At the end of our Lenten journey, the oil of chrism will be poured down in abundance on the brows of catechumens and infants, as well as on those to be confirmed or ordained. Lent puts us in touch with the hard edges of life in need of salvation, and the chrism of Easter joy redeems and restores. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. George Washington WISDOM A wise old owl lived in an oak. The more he saw the less he spoke. The less he spoke the more he heard. Why can t we all be like that wise old bird? English nursery rhyme JESUS AND THE LAW In today s continuation of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses the relationship between the current interpretation of the law of Moses and his own. He insists that he has come to fulfill, not abolish the law. Jesus is explicit here. He repeats the phrase, You have heard... with the counterpoint, But I say... He will not settle for mere avoidance of outright murder or adultery or lying. He goes to the source of murder hatred, resentment, spite. He insists on chaste living. He overrules the one-sided loopholes that allow men to divorce women, a law based on the view of women as property. He disallows all the means that people employ to play fast and loose with marriage. His words urge mutual fidelity. His listeners and followers are to honor the law wholly and not minimally. The consequences of failure are clear and severe. The smallest are watching. They are those rendered powerless by age or ignorance or circumstance. These little ones depend on the word and action of the mature and knowledgeable, and they are not to be betrayed. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 91 Days The Catholic Conference of Illinois is offering a 91-day program of daily, emailed readings of the Social Teaching of the Church. This is the perfect opportunity to learn about what Pope Francis has been focusing on since his election last March. Participants will receive a daily email featuring a small section of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church usually just a few paragraphs beginning on Ash Wednesday (March 5) and continuing through June 8. Go to www.ilcatholic.org and click on the 91 days banner to learn more and sign up. The readings will be offered in both English and Spanish. EXPECT AN ANSWER As a drought continued for what seemed an eternity, a small community of farmers was in a quandary as to what to do. Rain was important to keep their crops healthy and sustain the way of life of the townspeople. As the problem became more acute, a local pastor called a prayer meeting to ask for rain. Many people arrived. The pastor greeted most of them as they filed in. As he walked to the front of the church to officially begin the meeting he noticed most people were chatting across the aisles and socializing with friends. When he reached the front his thoughts were on quieting the attendees and starting the meeting. His eyes scanned the crowd as he asked for quiet. He noticed an eleven year-old girl sitting quietly in the front row. Her face was beaming with excitement. Next to her, poised and ready for use, was a bright red umbrella. The little girl's beauty and innocence made the pastor smile as he realized how much faith she possessed. No one else in the congregation had brought an umbrella. All came to pray for rain, but the little girl had come expecting God to answer...
ST. ALBERT THE GREAT - MARCH FOR LIFE IN WASHINGTON D.C. This year, a group of our young people accompanied by F. Anthony, Deacon Raymundo, Sr. Weronika and Sr. Agnieszka took part in the annual March for Life in Washington DC. The pilgrimage was a very special time for all of us. Together we prayed and manifested our support of all human life and called upon our government and society to change and appreciate the great gift from God that is life. For our young people it was also an excellent opportunity to see some of the beautiful memorials as well, which are present in the capitol. We saw the World War II memorial, the Vietnam War memorial, the John Paul Jones memorial and many others. We were able to see and appreciate the monuments erected to remember the sacrifices of others which, thanks to the grace of God, have helped give and preserve freedom in our country and world. In a peaceful and prayerful manner we were able to show our support and love for life and we continue to pray for the end of the horrible injustice of abortion. I wyjednaj, by w każdej rodzinie, w każdej fabryce, w każdym warsztacie, gdzie pracuje chrześcijanin wszystko było uświęcone miłością, cierpliwością, sprawiedliwością, troską o dobro - ażeby łaski niebios spływały obficie. Amen. Piotra wyrazów szacunku i hołdu. I my w naszych osobistych modlitwach pamiętajmy tego dnia o papieżu Franciszku i o całym Kościele, jakim przyszło mu w tych trudnych czasach kierować.
