Denis was not a good man but he did not interfere with her commitment to good works. She built lodging houses for travelers, a hospital, an orphanage, a home for women who wanted to leave a life of sin. She herself would look after the sick. When her husband fell ill and was dying, she forgave all his cruelties and nursed him in his last illness. He died in 1325. Elizabeth was now able to live as a Franciscan nun. She founded a great nunnery at Coimbra, and lived near it, often humbly serving the other nuns at their food. Elizabeth died seeking peace and reconciliation amongst the fierce monarchs of her age. Her son was now King Alfonso IV, and in 1336 he set out to do battle with his son-in-law, the King of Castile. Elizabeth, though sick, set off to bring peace between them. She succeeded in her mission, but the exertions were too much for her ailing body and she died before she could return to her beloved nuns at Coimbra. HELP HONOR AND BURY THE BABIES National Director of Priests for Life, Fr. Frank Pavone has asked to bury the bodies of the babies killed by abortionist Kermit Gosnell, who is currently serving three life sentences for murdering them. Priests for Life has now been told by the Philadelphia Medical Examiner that the bodies will not be released to any third party organization. Will you please join your voice with ours to respectfully petition the Medical Examiner to release the bodies for burial? On June 11, 1776, the colonies' Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia formed a committee with the express purpose of drafting a document that would formally sever their ties with Great Britain. The committee included Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston. Jefferson, who was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer, crafted the document. (Nevertheless, a total of 86 changes were made to his draft.) The Continental Congress officially adopted the final version on July 4. The following day, copies of the Declaration of Independence were distributed and, on July 6, "The Pennsylvania Evening Post" became the first newspaper to print the extraordinary document. The Declaration of Independence has since become our nation's most cherished symbol of liberty. On July 8, 1776, the first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia's Independence Square to the ringing of bells and band music. One year later, on July 4, 1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with bonfires, bells and fireworks. The custom eventually spread to other towns, both large and small, where the day was marked with processions, oratory, picnics, contests, games, military displays and fireworks.
