The roots of our tradition of ifty days of rejoicing from Easter to Pentecost lie in the seven-day rhythm of the Jewish week, drawn from the six days of creation plus a Sabbath day. A favorite name for the Lord s Day among our ancestors in the faith was The Eighth Day, meaning that in Christ a breakthrough to a new humanity was achieved. With that inner architecture, it makes sense to see Pentecost as a week of weeks, forty-nine days plus one, again signaling that a new age has begun in Christ and the outpouring of his Spirit. The Jewish appreciation for Pentecost gave rise to the Jubilee year, the iftieth year, when debts were released and prisoners set free. Today, the character of our Easter Sundays is conveyed by joyful Alleluias and the rite of sprinkling at Mass. Long ago, people expressed this joy by suspending all rules of fasting and by never kneeling at liturgy. These customs all point to our conviction that time is holy. There is an elegant balance to the Christian year: forty days of Lenten fast and discipline give way to ifty days of unrestrained rejoicing. That s why it is still Easter! Rev. Overview Two years ago, Pope Francis opened the irst showers at St. Peter's Square for those experiencing homelessness. In this spirit and as part of Catholic Charities 100th Anniversary Year celebrating a "Century of Hope," we added showers and laundry facilities for the homeless at our agency headquarters at 721 N. LaSalle St. The new Shower Program provides individuals with a shower, a change of clean clothes, a towel and shower shoes, and a toiletry kit illed with essentials. The Shower Program currently operates three days per week (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays). Each week more than 30 showers are taken. Each person who turns to our shower program also has the opportunity to meet with a case worker and receive additional support services. Donations The program is reliant on donations and volunteers to operate. All donations provide our clients with dignity and respect. We are continuously looking for donations of the following items: travel size shampoo; travel size conditioner; travel size body wash or bars of soap; toothpaste and toothbrush; razors; deodorant; socks; men's or women's underwear in all sizes. Our most urgent need is men s and women s underwear. Volunteer with the Shower Program We are called to act with God's mercy, love, and to treat all with dignity. When those in need turn to us for help, many use these enhanced services to feel con ident and prepare for job interviews. Providing a shower and change of clothes reminds each person that they matter and ills them with hope. Volunteers helping with the Shower Program greet guests, give them toiletries, help each person choose a new out it, and monitor time allotments in the showers. Volunteers do not clean the shower or laundry facilities.
