Dear parishioners and guests, Two years ago we introduced the parish campaign, "To Teach Who Christ Is." At that time we were given a goal of $390,000. In the course of the campaign we collected $324,000 in 5 year pledges. Forty percent of the funds would be designated for the support of Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Chicago, and 60% would be returned to the parish to cover present needs. To date, of the 324 thousand pledged, $150,000 has been paid out to the campaign. Of the 60% of this amount, 90 thousand dollars has been credited to our account. I am very grateful to everyone, namely, to those who fulfilled their pledges and contributed regularly to the campaign. May God reward you for your generosity. The parish planned to spend its share of the campaign funds on three projects: install an elevator, restore the benches, and replace the floor in the church. In the first order, we planned to install an elevator. The estimate for the work came in at $70,000. The elevator project called for a simple elevator with a platform, and installed in one of the side entrance stairwells. The elevator would provide access to the church and the basement hall. The city, however, blocked the project because according to their codes our church should accommodate a elevator of the type, "Lula." Such an installation means that the entire stairwell needs to be used and a new doorway entrance made on the basement level, requiring the standard of four building exits. This type of installation raises the project cost upward of $150,000. The project cost surpasses our budget. The completion of the elevator project alone would prevent us from completing the other two projects of repairing the benches and replacing the floor. Together with the parish finance council, we are looking for a solution to this difficult situation. I am asking your input, my beloved parishioners, on this matter. According to your understanding of our situation, should we install the elevator and end the restoration of the benches and the floor in the church? Please, in brief, write me your opinion and place it in the weekly collection basket. For me and the finance council, your opinion will be a great help in finding a strategy in the short term concerning our next move. Marek Drodzy parafianie i goście, Dwa lata temu przeprowadziliśmy w naszej parafii kampanię, To Teach Who Christ Is. Mieliśmy wtedy do zebrania kwotę 390 tysięcy dolarów. W wyniku kampanii zebraliśmy 324 tysiące dolarów w zobowiązaniach na 5 lat. 40% z tej kwoty zostanie przeznaczone na wsparcie szkolnictwa katolickiego w Archidiecezji Chicago, zaś 60% zostanie zwrócone naszej parafii na nasze parafialne potrzeby. Do tej pory z 324 tysięcy została wpłacona na kampanię kwota 150 tysięcy dolarów. Z tej kwoty 60% tj. 90 tysięcy dolarów jest już na naszym koncie. Bardzo dziękuję wszystkim, którzy dotrzymują swoich zobowiązań i regularnie wpłacają na tą kampanię. Niech Bóg wynagradza waszą ofiarność! Z funduszów, które zostaną zwrócone naszej parafii pierwotnie chcieliśmy zrealizować 3 projekty: instalacja windy, remont ławek i wymiana podłogi w kościele. W pierwszej kolejności chcieliśmy zainstalować windę. Początkowo instalacja windy miała kosztować 70 tys. Miała to być prosta winda platformowa, która zainstalowana w jednym z bocznych wejść do kościoła wywoziłaby ludzi do kościoła i do sali pod kościołem. Miasto niestety zablokowało ten projekt, gdyż według ich przepisów w naszym kościele może być zainstalowana winda typu lula. Zainstalowanie tej windy oznacza, że cała klatka schodowa musi być zajęta a do sali pod kościołem muszą być wykute kolejne drzwi, gdyż konieczne są 4 wyjścia awaryjne. W ten sposób koszt projektu wzrósł do 150 tysięcy dolarów. Kwota ta zdecydowanie przekracza nasze zdolności budżetowe. Zrobienie windy wg tego projektu zamknie także możliwość realizacji kolejnych dwóch tj. remontu ławek i wymiany podłogi. Wraz z radą finansową szukamy obecnie rozwiązania w tej trudnej sytuacji. Chciałbym także was kochani parafianie prosić o opinię. Czy według was powinniśmy zainstalować windę, rezygnując tym samym z remontu ławek i podłogi w kościele. Proszę was o napisanie na kartce krótko waszej opinii i wrzucenie jej wraz z ofiarą na tacę za tydzień (Tak lub Nie za windą). Dla mnie i dla rady finansowej będzie to duża pomoc w określeniu strategii działania na najbliższą przyszłość. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In this country, we don't name our churches "The Fourth Avenue Catholic Church," but rather seek a patron saint or mystery of faith. We inherit this tradition from an old Roman custom via medieval England. Interestingly, that has not been the practice elsewhere, and parishes abroad often do carry just the name of the neighborhood. In Ireland, the Roman (English) practices didn't take hold, and so churches are known simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi in Dublin is often called "Adam and Eve" after a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interesting carving of our first parents, so they become patrons by default. Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European pattern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a different name. Thus, we might hear of a parish of "Midvalley City" comprised of Saint Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. Therefore, when parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old, but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twentieth-century saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel, and Mother Teresa. DEDICATE THE SANCTUARY CANDLE The red Sanctuary Lamp by the tabernacle burns to remind us of the sacramental presence of Jesus Christ. It is a mark of honor to remind the faithful of the presence of Christ, and is a profession of their love and affection. If you wish to have the Sanctuary Lamp burning in memory of a loved one, to honor a special occasion, or a special intention make arrangements. You may also light one of the sanctuary lamps, or provide flowers in memory of a loved one, in thanksgiving, or for a special intention. A sanctuary lamp may be lit for a week ( through Saturday). You might also consider donating the sanctuary lamp that burns in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament either in the church or in the chapel in memory of a loved one who has died.
