TODAY S READINGS First Reading -The Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong? (Isaiah 50:5-9a). Psalm - I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living (Psalm 116). Second Reading - Faith, if it does not have works, is dead (James 2:14-18). Gospel - Jesus asked his disciples, Who do you say that I am? (Mark 8:27-35). SERVANT Sometimes the hour and the person meet. Sometimes, when a task or mission is set upon our shoulders, we know we must meet our responsibilities and we are ready. These are heady and invigorating times. The first reading and the Gospel proclamation today are intimate glimpses of a commencement, an inauguration of a challenging future. In both readings, a sense of gravity prevails. The first reading is from the mysterious Servant Songs from the book of Isaiah. The person is steadfast and brave. His courage and bravery are not located in his stout heart, but in God. We are reminded, The Lord GOD opens my ear that I may hear (Isaiah 50:4), so the servant understands the mission. We inherit this tradition from an old Roman custom via medieval England. Interestingly, that has not been the practice elsewhere, and parishes abroad often do carry just the name of the neighborhood. In Ireland, the Roman (English) practices didn t take hold, and so churches are known simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi in Dublin is often called Adam and Eve after a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interesting carving of our first parents, so they become patrons by default. Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European pattern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a different name. Thus, we might hear of a parish of Midvalley City comprised of Saint Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. Therefore, when parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old, but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twentieth-century saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel, and Mother Teresa. -Rev. Jakże trudno jest przyjąć Chrystusowe wezwanie do codziennego niesienia krzyża. Boimy się, że to ponad nasze siły, nie potrafimy zaufać i uwierzyć, że Pan nie pozostawia nas samym sobie. A przecież On nigdy nie prosi nas o coś, czego nie jesteśmy w stanie zrobić. Zaufajmy Bogu, naszemu Stwórcy, który naprawdę pragnie naszego dobra i szczęścia. ESCUCHANDO Y RESPONDIENDO En las lecturas de hoy se entrecruzan tres temas: escuchar a Dios, la fe vs. las buenas obras y perder nuestra vida para poder salvarla. De qué manera están relacionados estos temas? En Isaías, el Siervo Sufriente padece muchos disgustos y burlas, pero puede soportarlos porque ha escuchado los mensajes de Dios día tras día. El salmo nos dice que Dios también escucha. Dios escucha nuestras súplicas y siempre está dispuesto a salvarnos. Cuando nuestra fe se profundiza, también se profundiza nuestro deseo de hacer obras de justicia y caridad que fortalecen el Reino de Dios. Dios guía nuestras acciones de maneras que muchas veces no podemos ver y no siempre vemos los resultados.
