THE NEW COVENANT Today s first reading is an enormously important passage, not only in the history of the Jewish people, but also for us as disciples of Jesus, who see in it a foreshadowing of the Christian dispensation. The prophet announces that God has chosen to forgive the people, and that as a sign of divine forgiveness a new covenant will be established. Contrasting the new covenant with the one made with Moses on Mount Sinai, Jeremiah says that the new covenant will be written on the people s hearts rather than on tablets of stone. No longer will the community s tradition be the sole bearer of the covenant; henceforth, God will speak directly and personally to each individual, forgiving sin and calling for a return to God in faithfulness. No longer will mere outward compliance with the dictates of the Law suffice; henceforth, God asks for an obedience that springs from the depths of one s heart. Precisely that kind of obedience is highlighted in today s second reading, where the author of the Letter to the Hebrews describes Jesus as the mediator of the new covenant whose obedience has made him the source of salvation for all who, in turn, obey him. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Ask senior parishioners about this fifth Sunday, and they will share memories of this Sunday years ago, when it was known as Passion Sunday. In those days, the statues and crucifixes were draped in purple cloth, and a deeply somber atmosphere infused worship. The structure is different today for good reason. The stunning changes in the appearance of the church building drew attention away from the twofold work of Lent: reconciliation and preparing for initiation. Today, this Sunday is given to reflection on the necessity to commit, like Jesus, to the Father s will. Wherever elect are present today, the A reading reveals Jesus compassion in the face of human suffering, and his desire to call us from the tombs of sin, isolation, and even death itself. As Lent draws to a close over the next ten days, and before the beginning of the Easter Triduum on Holy Thursday, we enter an ideal time for celebrating the sacrament of reconciliation. Today s old title of Passion Sunday has migrated to next Sunday, also called Palm Sunday. In many places, people prepare their own bundles of branches for next week s liturgy: pussy willow, forsythia, dogwood. To powiedział zaznaczając, jaką śmiercią miał umrzeć. Jan 12,20-33 REFLEKSJA NA TEMAT CZYTAŃ NIEDZELNYCH... Począwszy od piątej niedzieli Wielkiego Postu, Kościół coraz bardziej koncentruje uwagę na tajemnicy krzyża. Czyni to jednak nie po to, byśmy współczuli cierpiącemu Jezusowi i litowali się nad Nim, ale byśmy przyjęli owoce Jego męki i śmierci. Jezus zapowiada swoją mękę jako wywyższenie, gdyż to właśnie w krzyżu nastąpił tryumf nad szatanem i jego dziełami oraz najpełniej objawiła się Boża miłość do każdego człowieka. Jeśli wierzymy tej miłości i pozwalamy się jej ogarnąć, stajemy się zdolni do tego, by rozpoznać i ukochać doświadczenie krzyża również w naszym życiu. A wtedy będziemy w nim widzieć już nie samo cierpienie, ale drogę, która przez umieranie dla siebie prowadzi nas do wydania plonu na życie wieczne. O. Maciej Zachara MIC, Oremus

VIA CRUCIS LOS VIERNES DE CUARESMA 7:30 PM - ESPAÑOL LA MISERICORDIA DE DIOS La lectura de hoy del libro de las Crónicas contiene una especie de breve historia de Israel, que pone de relieve la misericordia de Dios en la elección de Ciro el persa para ser instrumento de liberación cuando el pueblo estaba en cautiverio en Babilonia. A pesar de su pecado y el castigo merecido al que estaban siendo sometidos, la misericordia de Dios se prodigó en el pueblo en forma de un acto milagroso de liberación. La Carta a los Efesios, en términos mucho más teológicos, da una versión similar de un Dios que nos dio la vida con Cristo y en Cristo [y] por pura generosidad suya, hemos sido salvados. El autor hace hincapié en que era cuando estábamos muertos por nuestros pecados que Dios nos salvó, un acto de pura gracia. Hace hincapié en que no es nuestro propio esfuerzo que nos ha liberado del pecado ( esto no se debe a ustedes mismos ); sino que es un don de Dios. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En Latinoamérica, como en muchas partes del mundo, hay una horrible e impresionante pobreza. Enfrentado con la miseria humana, el cristiano puede responder con resignación Yo no soy nadie, qué puedo hacer yo? Nada. o puede responder con obras de caridad ayudando uno por uno a los pobres y necesitados. Esta virtud, es el pilar más importante de la conversión. Porque en ella imitamos a Jesucristo que vino no a condenar al mundo sino a salvarlo. Sin la caridad nuestros ayunos son dietas y nuestras oraciones son palabras necias. La caridad es una virtud cristiana, porque Dios es el mejor ejemplo de lo que es la caridad. La caridad no es limosna, es amor y justicia, es salud y salvación; es cumplir con el mandamiento de amarnos los unos a los otros en un mundo donde la mayoría son pobres y desamparados. La caridad es dar al necesitado algo que uno aun necesite, es obrar por cambios sociales que promuevan la dignidad humana y el bienestar económico de todos.
