(773) Jubilee Year of Mercy Could anyone object to Jesus supreme lesson in mercy, the parable of the Good Samaritan? Jesus devoutly religious audience certainly did! Scant sympathy for anyone foolish enough to travel crime-ridden Jericho Highway alone. Much sympathy for priest and Levite, hurrying to assigned temple ministry, unwilling to risk ritual impurity through hands-on mercy. No sympathy for Jesus scandalous hero. Samaritans were religious apostates and political enemies. Jesus challenges them and us to seek God s presence not only in liturgical beauty but in a fellow traveler s self-in licted misfortunes. See God s presence even in someone outside the law, whose hands-on mercy springs not from religious obligation but from the heart s instinctive goodness. Since Jesus became our Good Samaritan despite our foolishness and sins, who are we to ration our mercy? Who is my neighbor? (Luke 10:29). The next person we see who needs hands-on mercy! As the saying goes, ignorance of the law is no excuse. That is what Moses is telling the people in the irst reading. The laws of God are not dif icult to understand. Anyone with a conscience should be able to live with them. By the time of Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees had added many more laws. The scholar who questioned Jesus about eternal life knew what was important: loving God with all your being and loving your neighbor as yourself. If he had stopped there, he would have been all right. But by asking "Who is my neighbor?" he implied that there are limits to love. That's why Jesus used the parable of the good Samaritan to show that love is as simple as helping someone in need. Even today, we ind people making excuses for not doing what God asks of us. We want someone else to interpret it for us, hoping they will ind a loophole we can use to ignore God's commands. We judge people who need help, saying they choose to be poor or homeless. We say that between work and family obligations, we have no time to give to the community. We sign our kids up for so many sports that we don't even go to church on Sundays. We always have time to watch our favorite TV shows, but there's never enough time for daily prayers. Before you start beating yourself up with guilt, remember that God expects us to take care of our families, to spend time with our children, and even to take time to rest and relax. If we are willing to look at our lives and bring them to God, asking for guidance, we are making the irst steps to keep God's law of love. Even Jesus, whom Paul describes in the second reading as the image of God and source of all creation, had to die on the cross to show God's love to the world. 5 MISSION CO-OP COLLECTION Each year the Archdiocese of Chicago organizes Summer Mission Appeal. As part of our mission assistance program, we've welcomed Fr. Marcin Surga, Redemptorist to our parish this week. Among many religious Congregations participating in the time of renewal for the Catholic Church in Russia, there are also Redemptorists, who have immediately started their apostolic activities in the territory of Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan. At the moment, there are 26 Polish Redemptorists working there. They are planning to build a church and a parish pastoral center in Togliatti (Central Russia) - almost 1 million people live there, and there is still no Catholic Church in this city (it has never been built there). The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (C.Ss.R.) - was founded in Scala near Naples, Italy in 1732 by St. Alphonsus Liguori. At present, there are 5300 Redemptorists, as they are commonly called, serving people across the world in 78 countries. The motto of our Congregation "Copiosa Apud Eum Redemptio" means: "With Him there is Plentiful Redemption". Like St. Alphonsus, we follow Jesus the Redeemer in preaching this Good News to the poor. Our hope is that all of us can experience a growing sense of our identity as missionary disciples. Każdego roku nasza Archidiecezja organizuje we wszystkich para iach Dzień Misyjny. W ramach niedzieli misyjnej gościmy w naszej para ii Ojca Marcina Surgę, Redemptorystę, który głosi rozważania o pracy misyjnej tegoż zgromadzenia. Wśród wielu zgromadzeń zakonnych biorących udział w odnowie kościoła katolickiego w Rosji również Zgromadzenie Redemtorystów rozpoczęło apostolską posługę na terytorium Białorusi, Ukrainy, Rosji i Kazachstanu. W chwili obecnej pracuje tam 26 polskich Redemptorystów. W ramach swojej pracy misyjnej planują budowę pierwszego kościoła katolickiego i centrum pastoralnego w Togliatii (Centralna Rosja) gdzie mieszka prawie 1 milion ludzi. Mamy nadzieję, że w ten sposób każdy z nas będzie mógł bardziej zrozumieć potrzebę i sens działalności misyjnej.
