TODAY S READINGS First Reading - Do we not have one father? Did not the one God create us? (Malachi 1:14b - 2:2b, 8-10). Psalm - In you, Lord, I have found my peace (Psalm 131). Second Reading - You have received not a human word but the word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13). Gospel - Call no one your father on earth; you have but one Father, the one in heaven (Matthew 23:1-12). THE GREATEST AMONG US Whom do you admire? Is it the President of the United States or a movie star or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great. Like the Pharisees in today s Gospel, they have places of honor wherever they go. Would you like to follow in their footsteps? The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we are to honor and imitate. If you said the Vatican, or St. Peter s, you were off by a few miles, since the answer is the Basilica of St. John, the Lateran, the Mother Church of all the churches of the world and the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. It takes its name from the Lateran family, the Trumps of their day, who somehow ran afoul of the Emperor Nero. He seized all their property, including their vast Roman palace and estate. We don t know how Plautius displeased Nero so badly, but eventually all the Lateran property came to Constantine, the first Christian emperor, through his wife, Fausta. Early in the fourth century, when Christianity was at last legalized, Constantine gave the property to the church. Soon the great meeting halls were expanded and adapted. Over the centuries, the church building has been sacked by armies, ruined by fire, torn down, and rebuilt. The oldest and most unchanged part of the Lateran is a vast, separate baptistery with steps leading down to a huge green basalt pool. Imagine what a triumphal moment the dedication of this public church building was for a community that had worshiped in secret for so long! This Thursday s feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica is really about the tradition of consecrating space for worship, and so by extension, a feast for your parish church building and, given the beautiful second reading, for its baptistery as well. - Rev. First, there is the intended assembly, which is described as comprised of mostly children of school age. There are three Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children available to us now in the missal. The first one has a very simple form, easily grasped by even a young child. The second has a great deal of participation by the assembly repeated sung acclamations. The third has a number of variations that can be tricky for a priest to handle if he hasn t prepared carefully. All of this work does point to a true treasure of our tradition: children are part of the Sunday assembly, precisely because they are baptized members of Christ s body. By contrast, the churches of the Reformation tend to look upon children as members in training, and see worship as an adult activity. Sunday school happens downstairs while the adults celebrate Holy Communion upstairs. In a phrase, that s not Catholic. Children belong to Christ and to the assembly. So, the desire to care for the children in the assembly, to draw them into the prayer, and to adapt our rituals and texts to their needs is deeply Catholic, a true pastoral effort to help draw everyone into the praise of God. - Rev. Ml 1,14b - 2,2b.8-10 Jezus przemówił do tłumów i do swych uczniów tymi słowam: Na katedrze Mojżesza zasiedli uczeni w Piśmie i faryzeusze. Czyńcie więc i zachowujcie wszystko, co wam polecą, lecz uczynków ich nie naśladujcie. Mówią bowiem, ale sami nie czynią. Wiążą ciężary wielkie i nie do uniesienia i kładą je ludziom na ramiona, lecz sami palcem ruszyć ich nie chcą. Wszystkie swe uczynki spełniają w tym celu, żeby się ludziom pokazać. Rozszerzają swoje filakterie i wydłużają frędzle u płaszczów. Lubią zaszczytne miejsca na ucztach i pierwsze krzesła w synagogach. Chcą, by ich pozdrawiano na rynkach i żeby ludzie nazywali ich Rabbi. Otóż wy nie pozwalajcie nazywać się Rabbi, albowiem jeden jest wasz Nauczyciel, a wy wszyscy braćmi jesteście. Nikogo też na ziemi nie nazywajcie waszym ojcem; jeden bowiem jest Ojciec wasz, Ten w niebie. Nie chciejcie również, żeby was nazywano mistrzami, bo jeden jest tylko wasz Mistrz, Chrystus. Największy z was niech będzie waszym sługą. Kto się wywyższa, będzie poniżony, a kto się poniża, będzie wywyższony. Mateusz 23:1-12 REFLEKSJA NAD CZYTANIAMI NIEDZIELNYMI... Często bardzo trudno jest przyjąć słowo, które Bóg kieruje do nas przez ludzi. Wydaje nam się, że gdyby osobiście do nas przemówił, łatwiej byłoby nam uwierzyć. Ale czy wtedy nie bylibyśmy w pewien sposób przymuszeni do wiary, pozbawieni wolności wyboru? Bóg mówi do nas, szanując naszą wolną wolę, lecz aby przyjąć Jego słowa przekazywane za pośrednictwem człowieka, potrzebujemy łaski Bożej. Módlmy się dziś o nią. I o wiarę, która jest darem Pana. ks. Comenzamos con el pasaje del profeta Malaquías, uno de los profetas tardíos, quien escribió después que los judíos retornaron de Babilonia. Amonestando al pueblo en el nombre de Dios, condena las divisiones y falsas enseñanzas que han surgido, recordándoles que todos fueron creados por el único Dios. Pablo dice la misma cosa a los tesalonicenses, pero de una manera positiva, elogiándolos por recordar que Dios es el que obra en ellos. Finalmente, el Evangelio presenta a Jesús hablando contra la hipocresía y la vanagloria. No tienen más que un Maestro... el padre de ustedes es sólo el Padre celestial (Mateo 23:8, 9).
