(773) 491-6929 Treasures From Our Tradition Easter is nearly three weeks later this year than last. Why does the date wobble around the calendar so? The way of calculating the date was set by the Emperor Constantine in 325. The decision ended a very bitter controversy in the church. Some people wanted to synchronize the Pasch with Passover on the fourteenth day of the Jewish month Nissan, and their opponents wanted it after the Passover was complete, on the Sunday after the irst full moon of springtime. The ecclesiastical rules do not exactly connect with the astronomical rules. The emperor squashed the hopes of the quartodecimans, as the fans of 14 Nissan were called, and chose Sunday. The traditional rule is that Easter is the irst Sunday after the irst ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the vernal equinox, the fourteenth day of the new moon, and later than March 21. Thus, Easter wobbles between March 22 and April 25. The actual tables and methods for computing the date are extraordinarily detailed, with subtle variations and mind-bending exceptions and charts with golden numbers, dominical letters, and epacts measuring leap years. In 1954 and 1962 the ecclesiastical calculations actually overrode the astronomical new moons and bumped Easter back a month! Today, there is a movement in the World Council of Churches (Protestants and Orthodox) for all Christians to combine their celebrations, based on the star charts for the Jerusalem skies. He describes Easter morning. Women go to the tomb at dawn on the irst day of the week. An angel appears and speaks to them: Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the cruci ied. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples. In these words, we ind the essential Easter message directed to each one of us today in our uncertain world and amid the painful burdens we carry: do not be afraid, come and see, go and tell. Easter eases our fear when we come to know God s triumph in the resurrection of Jesus. Easter invites us to come and see with fresh eyes what God has done in conquering sin and death. Easter summons us to go and share our faith and hope with others. When we hear this message and recognize Jesus Christ as the Risen Lord of life, how can we not praise and thank God? How can we not walk together with new con idence and hope? In a time when violence and death-dealing forces seem rampant in the world and even in our own neighborhoods, we truly need new con idence and hope. And when we listen to the Lord, as we have been trying to do in the Archdiocese of Chicago, to seek directions for the renewal of our local Church, we surely need new con idence and hope. Pray with me that we may all truly hear the words - do not be afraid, come and see, go and tell and so draw new life from them for our loved ones, our world, our city and metropolitan area, our Church, and our very selves. Kobiety o poranku, pierwszego dnia tygodnia poszły do grobu. Pojawił się tam anioł i powiedział do nich: Wy się nie bójcie! Gdyż wiem, że szukacie Jezusa Ukrzyżowanego. Nie ma Go tu, bo zmartwychwstał, jak powiedział. Chodźcie, zobaczcie miejsce, gdzie leżał. A idźcie szybko i powiedzcie Jego uczniom. W tych słowach odnajdujemy podstawowe przesłanie Wielkanocy skierowane do każdego z nas w dzisiejszym niepewnym, przytłaczającym dźwiganymi ciężarami świecie: nie bójcie się, chodźcie i zobaczcie, idźcie i powiedzcie. Wielkanoc łagodzi nasz lęk, gdyż w zmartwychwstaniu Jezusa widzimy tryumf Boga. Wielkanoc jest zaproszeniem dla nas, abyśmy przyszli i świeżym spojrzeniem dostrzegli to, czego dokonał Bóg, gdy pokonał grzech i śmierć. Wielkanoc jest wezwaniem dla nas, abyśmy szli i dzielili się naszą wiarą i nadzieją z innymi. Jakże moglibyśmy słysząc to przeslanie i rozpoznając Jezusa Chrystusa jako Zmartwychwstałego Pana życia, nie chwalić Boga i nie dziękować Mu? Jakże moglibyśmy wspólnie nie kroczyć naprzód z nowym zawierzeniem i nową nadzieją? W czasie, kiedy przemoc i śmiercionośne siły zdają się gwałtownie rozprzestrzeniać w świecie, a nawet w naszych środowiskach i sąsiedztwach, prawdziwie potrzebujemy nowego zawierzenia i nowej nadziei. Kiedy słuchamy Pana, tak jak to próbujemy robić w Archidiecezji Chicago, w poszukiwaniu wskazówek dla odnowy naszego lokalnego Kościoła, z pewnością potrzebujemy nowego zawierzenia i nowej nadziei. The tomb is empty! Jesus Christ has risen today! Our Savior is active, alive, and transforming us, our Parish, even the world, at this very moment. Easter is a time of joy, a time of celebration. To have faith in the risen Lord is also to believe that we are disciples who bear witness to Christ in a broken and troubled world. To be good stewards of this faith obliges us to be living witnesses to Christ s peace at home and in public. Jesus cannot be found buried. He is risen. Alleluia! May the Spirit of the Easter Christ enable us to move the boulders of discouragement and pry open the tombs of fear in order that we may bring God s joy and peace into our own homes and hearts, our own schools and neighborhoods.
